It has never happened to me like this before. Yesterday, I stopped at a little taqueria just east of Austin to get something to eat. As I was waiting, a big, stocky black guy holding a roll of paper towels under his arm came up to me and asked me if I wanted my windshield cleaned for $1. I said, "No, I'm good." He kept on, saying "Hey, just give me $1. Can't you see I'm trying to work to get money for a taco?"
I politely declined, telling him my finances were tight due to car repairs and trying to pay for school for my son. He began to get upset and then looked at me and said, "You're racist!" and some other babble I didn't quite catch. He looked at my wedding ring and said he used to have one, but he sold it. I asked him, "How can I be racist if my wife is a native of Mexico?" "Why would I marry a Mexican if I were racist?" He shot back, "She's not black!"
The poor little woman in the taco trailer told him she'd make him a taco for free(to shut him up) and he settled down. Now, my question is this: Is this a hate crime, trying to extort money off of people as they go to a taco trailer trying to get something to eat? What if I were to have tried that on someone? Police probably would have been called. This has left me with a really bad taste in my mouth. I blame Obama and all Democrats for this. They have so divided people that a lot of blacks have been enabled in treating everyone else in an abusive manner. My CCW was in the car which kept me from telling the man what I wanted to tell him and things probably would not have ended well for the street thief. How sad to put oneself in a position to die over trying to extort $1 off of someone. This nation is going to hell in a handbasket.
I’m elderly female, have tried to “pointedly ignore these cretins”. I avoid our downtown area which is taken over by street people, as do my friends, with the result our downtown area has become derelict, and we do 99% of business in shopping malls because of safety concerns. I donate to the Salvation Army as they do fine work in our town rehabilitating people.
Don’t engage bums. Be alert, but ignore them. Trust me, I’m as close to being a PhD on bums as one can be.

I agree, but see #95 I posted an article
Why diod you find it necessary to explain your finances to this person. No thank and move on. The second time is, “do you need NO explained to you”?
Never been to Brooklyn, I see.
I can tell you have never met the “I can tell you where you got your shoes” guy in New Orleans.
If somebody yanks your door open, you've lost it. Center console or under the steering wheel maybe?
I was in Spokane WA last week, sitting in the car half snoozing and waiting for my wife to pick up a prescription. Suddenly a hand slamming against my window shocked me off my seat.
It was a large black guy trying to pull open my door yelling, "Do you want to call me a nigger today?"
I live in Idaho, recently moved from Washington where I do hold a CCW. Because we left home early and in a bit of a rush I didn't carry that day.
I got out of the car, confronted the guy and diffused the situation peacefully with several people standing around around watching. But, I won't be traveling unstrapped to urban areas anymore.
In a bit of irony, we had relatives visit recently from South Carolina. They were traveling the country in their motorcoach looking for a new place to live because they feel the new and openly aggressive attitude they have felt coming from blacks since Obama's reign has made then very uncomfortable there. They both carry and do not go anywhere alone.
This has left me with a really bad taste in my mouth.

We should be careful to get out of an experience all the wisdom that is in it - not like the cat that sits on a hot stove lid. She will never sit on a hot stove lid again and that well, but neither will she sit on a cold one any more.

I sometimes have to travel for work and visit a liberal utopia that was known for its shops and restaurants. I used to patronize some of them when I’d visit. But the town does nothing to discourage the panhandlers. On one of my last visits I had one yelling at me for money because I ignored him (I didn’t stop and kept walking and he kept yelling).
The utopia isn’t much of a utopia anymore. Lots and lots of vacant stores and there have been news articles that the golden goose is on its sick bed. Comments to those news articles are filled with complaints about panhandlers.
“Leadership” isn’t going to do anything and is a cop out for taking personal action against the race card.
And, the “I married a Mexican” or “some of my best friends are black” defense, while true, isn’t effective.
People need to be shamed for playing the race card.
“Are you kidding me? Are you really calling me a racist because I don’t want my windshield cleaned? Do you really want to cheapen real racism for a friggin’ taco?”
Don’t go on the defensive (my wife is a mexican), that’s what race-baiters are after. It’s positive reinforcement to continue race-baiting.
Go on the attack. Make them feel uncomfortable for trying that crap. Negative feedback.
I would have insulted him. And then when he threw a punch at me I would have shot him. Dead.
In one-sy pajamas.
About 30 years ago, I was approached by a vagrant in a downtown Ottawa parking garage, looking for ‘money to buy something to eat’. Being a government city, the downtown is mostly vacated by 6:30PM. It was 8:30PM and I had worked late. I offered to buy him supper, but he refused. I was cursed at, as he staggered away and I got in my car and drove home.

Thanks for the story.
In my opinion, it was an attempted mugging.
