Seeking advice on shoulder pain.
myself | 11/3/16 | me

Posted on 11/03/2016 6:00:02 PM PDT by gop4lyf

I have severe shoulder pain, especially when using either A. an overhand throwing motion or, B. reaching behind my back. I've been to an orthopedic doctor. He did x-rays and said that I did have arthritis. He further examined me and said that I didn't have a torn rotator cuff, tendonitis, or bursitis. He gave me a cortisone shot into one of my shoulder joints that hurt like hell, but did help. I then went to a chiropractor and he suggested that I may have a pinched nerve in my neck. I've been going to therapy with him 3 times a week for 3 weeks now, with no relief whatsoever. OTC pain meds don't help in the slightest, and anything stronger causes me to projectile vomit. I've had this pain since June. I didn't have any kind of injury. I'm 40 years old. Please help.

Chiropractors typically will over treat you with multiple un-necesarry sessions. That’s how they stay in business.

I had shoulder problems...had the cortisone shots, etc. Couldn’t do push-ups, etc. Painful shoulders.

I read Chuck Norris’s semi-autobiographical book “Against All Odds” ...and he remarked that he was having shoulder problems and was contemplating surgery. Someone heard about it and sent Chuck the “Total Gym” ....and Chuck decided to give it a try. After weeks (months?) of using it, he cancelled the surgery. This was before some of his winning competitions.

Well...I picked up a Total Gym ...found one cheap off of Craigslist (Face it...lots of people buy exercise equipment, and after it sits around and gathers dust...they sell it a few years later for a great discount.) I used it...and after a few months - the exercises helped stabilize and strengthen my shoulders to the point I was no longer having problems.

YMMV. If you have serious damage...a Total Gym might not work. BUT - if the damage is not great, proper exercise might strengthen the muscles, tighten things up...and give you relief, like it did for me.

I am sick of seeing that ad that has that word in it. I can’t even remember what drug it is for but I remember the word methotraxate.

I swear by bone broth. It has done wonders for me. Used tumeric in it too. Of course I had to worry about if my crock pot had lead..oh and whether plastic liners are bad for you

You need an MRI.

You cannot see a torn rotator cuff in an x-ray and your doctor doesn’t sound competent about shoulders.

Take it from me. Three shoulder operations over 4 years.

FK!!!

Could not raise my arm to wash my hair, go behind my back etc.

Went to an ortho and a chiropractic. They knew instantly without x-ray it was torn.

Infact, it was wrecked.

See an ortho and get that x-ray.

Dude, I’ve had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders. You need an MRI, it’s the only sure way to tell.

Do you have numbness in thumb, index and midle finger from time to time? If you do it may be thoracic outlet syndrome. A few MLB pitchers like Matt Harvey have had it.

I then went to a chiropractor...

Well, there's your problem, right there!

Glorified Massage Therapist...that thinks every problem in the body can be cured by snapping your neck...uh, excuse me...manipulating your neck.

They are useless.

Find a good sports doctor, one with experience in treating specific joint disorders, NOT a damned quackipactor.

Arthritis means inflammed joint. So, you should find a practitioner who can find the inflammation. It’s probably a symptom rather than a cause of your discomfort.

would rather find a witch doctor that would dance around with chicken head than go to a chiro. ( tooooo many bad experiences, pseudo-science to me)

And..
If you do see a chiropracter make sure they are trained in the GONSTEAD method

For any pain above the navel, the first thing you should check is the heart.

Have you seen a Cardiologist?

Avoid chiropractic solutions.
It is rare when these quacks resolve any problem long term.

It sounds like you might have joint impingement syndrome. See a sports medicine specialist / surgeon if you can manage it. They know what to look for.

A chiropractor saved my life. For years I suffered from a cluster of debilitating symptoms, spent thousands going to various specialists, and years in pain. The “quack” was the first to link all of them to food allergies. He gave me a system cleanse and a stripped down diet to reset my digestive system. In 3 days, 9 YEARS of agony disappeared. I now go to him first before heading down the traditional road.

How did the pain first present itself? Was it sudden or was its onset more gradual?

Oh dear! if you have inflammation, don’t heat it up, cool it down! Heat feels good, but icing, then heat is better!
