A patient has been left badly burnt after she farted during surgery and caused a laser to burst into flames.
The unnamed woman, in her 30s, was undergoing surgery at Tokyo Medical University Hospital which involved a laser being applied to her cervix.

I hate it when that happens.
As they say “at your cervix.”
Wow. Exotic gas mishap or what?
“Watch this y’all.”
I’d like to see if they did a risk assessment on that.
I saw the headline and thought “this ought to be good” and then read the excerpt and thought “uh, that doesn’t sound like a laughing matter.” Hope she comes through it okay.
I know there will be lots of jokes on this thread, but on a serious note, wouldn’t that be something that doctors would be aware of and take precautions against? I don’t know what is normal during surgery, but if I had to guess, I’d guess farting is not rare.
Any FReepers out there with medical experience?
Pretty sure the laser did not burst into flames, rather the methane in the fart.
Journalists. Geesh.
She will go thru life the butt of ongoing jokes.
Journalism at it's finest.
“Any FReepers out there with medical experience?”
No, but I have plenty of farting experience.
Lol, hey that’s as good as it gets these days.
Blazing Saddles
You live long enough and your bound to have an escapee or two, and I’ve had my share, but can’t say the Fire Department ever had to be called!
I never saw “farted” in the Associated Press Stylebook.
One source says:
A typical breakdown of the chemical composition of farts is:
Nitrogen: 20-90%
Hydrogen: 0-50% (flammable)
Carbon dioxide: 10-30%
Oxygen: 0-10%
Methane: 0-10% (flammable)
Note to self: avoid burritos prior to surgery.
No kidding. What ever happened to tooting, or she ripped one?
The human body is dirty, always has been. As a friend of mine was fond of saying: "sex is only dirty if it's done right."
