Does anyone here have any experience with selling on Ebay? I just put an ad to sell an iPhone yesterday. I've received several requests to buy it right away and asked for my paypal account.
Some have offered to pay even $150 more than my asking price. I've looked at many of these requests, and most of their accounts were created yesterday, so that makes me very wary of selling something to these guys.
Is anyone familiar with ebay scams? I mean, is it common for someone to get their payment returned from Paypal some how after the item has shipped?
I used to but stopped. You pay Fees whether the item sells or NOT. Great deal for eBay, not fotlr the seller.
Scammers~!!!! Electronics are the worst.
They can then file Item Not As Described. Return you an old broken iPhone. eBay AND PayPal will side with buyer.
In this case . . . Seller BEWARE.
Good Luck.
STAY AWAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My daughter came close to being scammed in exactly this way using Craig’s list.
.
Another thing you have to worry about is them returning a broken iPhone for your iPhone and getting a refund.
I don’t see any harm in creating a new listing for the same item to sell it to them individually. Once payment posts on Pay Pal it’s all good then you can end the other listing reason: item is no longer available for sale.
That’s a good point which is why I would list it as “No returns accepted” and I would post photos of it working in the auction. “Arrives as pictured”
A couple of my experiences with PP were the worst. One was-
I let the auction go thru to the end. The buyer with no experience/history paid via PP (held in suspense). The item was shipped to the buyer. The very same day that the item was delivered, the buyer initiated a claim with PP saying the item was not as described. It was up to me to defend the item.
In the end, the buyer kept the item and had his money returned to him. I was told by PP that the buyer was shipping the item back to me.
The item was never delivered back to me. They gave PP a bogus shipping/tracking#.
The item was listed as-is with no returns. Auction price was $25.05. Shipping was usps priority mail-fixed price.
It was a very old cast iron pan- (Griswold #5 from the ‘20s) in very good condition. All I had were pictures of the item which I sent back to PP to defend my item.
The claim was it was warped and had a crack in it, basically saying it was un-useable.
Going forward I’ve learned to say up front in all caps- as-is no returns. And to be as vague as possible in the descriptions of the item.

I sold a motorcycle on Ebay, and the “buyer” used the “buy it now” option. He then asked for my bank account info so he could just wire it and be done with it. LOL
NEVER give out your Pay-pay or banking info, as it is completely unnecessary. Also, it’s a good idea to search and read about “Ebay scams” - there are several. Other than occasional scumbags, I find Ebay easy to use, and the search filters very helpful.
List it auction style for 0.99, it will get bid up very fast. I sold a broken one this way, sold for $135.00 to some iphone refurbish company in CA.
Be careful, lots of bad characters that prey on new sellers. Even experienced sellers get scammed on scambay especially if you use fraudpal. If you do sell, use tracking with signature confirmation.
I didn’t read all of the responses, so sorry if this repeats other info.
What your “buyer” wants to do is get your email address so that he can spoof a paypal email telling you that you have been paid.
You should always check your paypal account to be sure that funds are deposited.
You probably, particularly if you are a new seller, will not be able to sell the phone without doing a Buy It Now with Immediate Payment Required. Otherwise, you will be inundated with these scammers.
Two good resources are the Ebay Seller Discussion board, and Reddit.com/r/ebay. They’ve seen it all. Good luck.

Even though you can list your item with “No returns accepted”, you still have to accept a return according to ebays rules and up to 6 months! Not sure why they have that option when it means nothing. And they don’t have to have a valid reason for returning it either.
My boy sold an item which was described by the buyer as "not as described". My boy said "Send it back for a refund." He got the package back and it was a brick shipped in a priority box. eBay, in effect, said "Tough Noogies, pay any way".
I've been selling on eBay since the '90s and have not had these kinds of experiences, but then I sell antique reloading tools and dies and work with an ethical crowd.
Stick to Ebay. Stick to the rules.
Phones in great shape sell well with a 1 or 3 day auction starting at $0.99 if you have good Ebay points. My kids do this every time they want a new phone.
Maybe take a photo / video of the item going into the packaging AT A LOCAL MAILBOX STORE. Or UPS store.
Also for expensive items ask for the signature upon delivery. That way the recipient can’t say the package was stolen from his doorstep as someone did with us (an XBox!). We had asked for signature and the idiot had signed it so we were free and clear.
No, PayPal is very good for Ebay. Stick with PayPal.
Here’s what happened to my friend trying to sell her high-end camera on Ebay.
She had the auction, had a lot of emails from people begging her to sell it to them without using Ebah. She refused.
Auction ended. Sold to someone who wanted it shipped to Nigeria. Got a Paypal email saying it had been paid for. Packaged it up and took to post office. Called me after she shipped saying something felt wrong.
I told her it was a scam, paypal would not send her an email as she described, she needed to check her paypal account herself. She did. Money wasn’t there, it was all a scam and fake but real looking paypal email.
She went back to the post office, it had already gone out to the bigger post office 50 miles away. She drove there immediately and got her camera back!
Buyer disappeared, did not pay (of course).
Be careful.
