No, he didn't, even though I'm disappointed at how many opportunities he whiffed on. As was rightly said upthread, it is the tone that will be remembered. the media and the Hillary campaign was counting on him making an unrecoverable (and easily turned to sound-bytes) error.
Not a Cruz guy...
Honestly...
1.) The split screen hurt Trump hugely.
2.) He never hit her on Wall Street speech donations. That was a layup, unless he’s equally at risk.
If the only thing this debate changed is Ohio, it’s a big win.
She'll finish herself off. If he "finished her off" the raging anachronisms of Free Republic would be quaking in their crinoline about how mean he looked.
Watched it all the way through.
Totally validates my conscious decision to be a drinking man.
Trump did fine but can do better. Trump has to moderate and debate at the same. Tough task.
Trump took Holt down on the Iraq War question. I mean he wiped the floor with him.
Hillary was baffled during the economy section. He won the national security section hands down.
He won the international section by pointing out the fact that our allies should pay their way and that IRan was a payoff and a ransom.
He won 3 out of 3 sections.
I DESPISE Cruz, and don't work for Soros. What debate were you watching? Trump started out fantastic, and then fell completely apart. When Lester Holt showed his bias Trump should have STOPPED HIM COLD and ridiculed his questions as issues the American people don't care about.
In the next debate he needs to crush her endlessly on trade and jobs and crime and NEVER let moderators change the subject. BE the bully they all say you are.
Agreed. Trump didn’t think we’ll on his feet. He didn’t articulate or flesh out his ideas very well.
’ ... a big opportunity for him to bring up the Clinton foundation ... ‘
I agree with that. He was determined NOT to mention it for some reason.
Trump winning 54% to 41%
Hillary’s weak, textbook liberal policy proposals (negotiation...stimulus programs) needed something of a wonk to skewer them. She rattled them off so slickly that it takes a sensitive political ear to quickly translate them into the standard Democrat boilerplate that they are and skewer them as being no new ideas. That would be one area where Cruz would have outdone Trump.
You also needed a wonk to explain that “greed” didn’t cause the housing crisis, Fannie and Freddie did...or more broadly, liberal big government command and control of the economy.
Well 2 more debates— there’s so much more he can hit her with.. The Clinton Foundation, Haiti, illegal e-mail server and bleach bit destructions, Russian uranium deal— he needs to hone down his targets and materials more.
It may have been rigged, but he didn't bat it out of the park. Nowhere near. It's hard to see how he could have been any worse than he was.
My sense is that he didn't do much preparation because he felt like he didn't have to, and that was a terrible error in judgment on his part.
I hope he learns from this experience, and comes back much more prepared and more in control in the next two.
Results at the linked poll:
Donald Trump (54%)
Hillary Clinton (46%)
“... She needed to land punches and she failed ...”
The way she and the moderator coordinated this it seems like a miracle that Trump did so well.
The MSM has nothing to do with what people heard her say.

They both have the same message and talking points. It does matter because the public recognize her lies because they recognize the MSM lies (talking points). That’s why she’s spent over 50 million and her numbers still went down.
Trump 54%, Illary 46%
Actually I will watch the whole thing tomorrow.
Tonight I just muted Shrill every time she was on! I thought Trump did great but I’ll admit it’s an extremely biased evaluation. LOL! (I have a stomach flu tonight and didn’t want to push my self by adding an emetic (Shrill) in to the mix.)
If we have to listen to her for 4 years, I’m sure the suicide rate will go sky high!
