Rock n'f'n ROOL !!! [a satirical view of musicianship from an aging Boomer]

Rock n'f'n ROOL !!!

I always said that the Bassist is the most normal person in the room .... the Lead Singer is always an exhibitionist jumping about like a spastic idot [sic] screaming some incoherent gibberish into some cheap $23 dollar microphone bought from some cheezy pawnshop located in the seediest part of town, while the posing Lead Guitarist flails about in spandex with legs spread wide, a raised fist in mock triumph to his lame power chord, stomping on a battalion of s***ty sounding effects pedals, each one sounding noisier and more obnoxious than the other ...

Sometimes the Lead Singer and Lead Guitarist are one and the same, and then it gets really scary !!

The Drummer is just simply 'The Drummer' ... the drummer is not really considered as a 'human being' at all in the classic sense ... similar to the Pitcher in baseball and the Goalie in ice-hockey, they do what they do and they do it well, but don't ever get too close to any of 'em because they're usually psychopathic otherwise.

And don't get me started on smugly 'superior' Keyboardists either!!! ... "Classically Trained", yeah right, studied Piano at the feet of some maniacal Nun since they were four years old, who sadistically smacked their hand with a yardstick if they played the wrong note, and who now smack their fellow bandmates with lightning bolt dirty looks if any one of 'em dare to deviate from the prescribed sheet music chart.

Yes indeedy, the Bassist is the most normal person in the band ... which is why I gave up guitar and now play bass in a band ... I am now the anchor link between rational and the insane asylum ....... but I ain't sayin' which is which.

Well, the whole concept of “street cred” is associated with rap music, which is generally eschewed by those of more discriminating musical tastes.
So...know whu’m say’n? Methinks you do get my hoodoo, you do, even tho’ I forgot my /sarc tag.

Oh, and I’ve got a Carl Thompson bass. :-)

Mine is a G&L Lynx Bass from 1988 ... a "Jazz Bass" designed from the man himself: "G" being George Fullerton, and "L" being Leo Fender ... there is nothing wrong with any instrument designed by Leo or George post 1964 ... they're all just slabs of wood meant to played by players at gigs ... there is nothing more *magical* of a '51 Precision than there is of a '86 G&L Lynx .... both are just slabs of wood engineered by Leo Fender.

"... the 'boomer' generation set the standard for excellence in music that has gone unmatched nowadays."

True, true. It's amazing how many Generation.commers listen to AC/DC, Zeppelin, Floyd, and other classic rock bands because the music of their generation doesn't speak to them. I'm an Xer, and even we have damn few bands to point to with pride...except for 10 Pound Test (which I mention only in the interest of getting in a shameless self-plug).

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho! God Bless Texas!

COVER OF ROLLING STONE

Well, we’re big rock singers
We’ve got golden fingers
And we’re loved everywhere we go (that sounds like us)
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
For ten-thousand dollars a show (right)
We take all kinds of pills that give us all kind of thrills
But the thrill we’ve never known
Is the thrill that’ll get ya when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rolling Stone

Chorus
(Rolling Stone) Wanna see my picture on the cover
(Stone)Wanna buy five copies for my mother (yeah)
(Stone)Wanna see my smilin’ face
On the cover of the Rolling Stone (that’s a very, very, good idea)

I got a freaky ole lady name a cocaine Katy
Who embroideries on my jeans
I got my poor old grey haired daddy
Drivin’ my limousine
Now, it’s all designed to blow our minds
But our minds won’t really be blown
Like the blow that’ll get ya when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rolling Stone

Chorus

[Freaky Guitar Break]
(Ah, that’s beautiful)

We got a lot of little teenage blue-eyed groupies
Who do anything we say
We got a genuine Indian Guru
Who’s teaching us a better way
We got all the friends that money can buy
So we never have to be alone
And we keep getting richer but we can’t get our picture
On the cover of the Rolling Stone

Chorus twice

An old fave of mine from Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show

I inherited this bass from my older brother when he passed away a year and a half ago. It's a '67 Kalamazoo by Gibson. I was with him when he bought it used in '68 for $85. It was originally red - he did a major refurb job on it a few years before he passed. His Fender P Bass went to his daughter.

EDM may be more popular, but it's not "better"...hell, it's not even music. It's a computer program.

"Ooooooooh, watch me press this button!"

Yup, Leo & George were two pioneers of musical instruments. At a time where guitars were hand built by craftsmen with hand tools, putting them out of reach of the "common folk," Leo Fender came up with a guitar that was derisively called "the plank" by some, known as the Broadcaster, eventually renamed the Telecaster. It was inexpensive, but terrific quality. But that wasn't the only innovation. The electric bass, and amplifiers. The Bassman amplifier is a classic that many of the most amazing guitar amplifiers are based upon.

One other thing... Between the Fender & G&L days, Leo Fender also started Musicman, with a whole new generation of basses and amplifiers.

Just in the bass world, Leo Fender was behind some of the most sought-after basses (Presicion, Jass, and Musicman Stingray) as well as some of the best amplifiers.

I think this was a well reasoned, perfectly rational description.
Oh, and I’ve got a Carl Thompson bass. :-)

Does Jim Thompson know about this?

I'm all ears ... whereabouts in Texas? My sister wants to move there to get away from these oppressive NYC taxes, and she's trying to talk me into going to TX with her. I'm a bit hesitant because I don't want to leave the NYC limelight, but if it's a steady gig with decent pay than I'm open to it ... as long as I can hit the ski slopes in NM or UT or NV relatively easily ... probably some driving distance from TX, but at least wouldn't have to sweat the 24/7 perpetual traffic jams that is NYC ...
