70-year-old says he robbed bank because he preferred jail to his wife

A 70-year-old man charged with robbing a Kansas City, Kan., bank said he did it because he preferred a jail cell over living with his wife.

Lawrence John Ripple is charged in federal court with the Friday afternoon robbery of the Bank of Labor at 756 Minnesota Ave.

According to court documents, Ripple handed a teller a note that read, “I have a gun, give me money.”

The teller complied.

But instead of fleeing, Ripple took the money and then took a seat in the bank lobby, according to the documents.

When a bank security guard approached him, Ripple told the guard, “I’m the guy you’re looking for.”

The guard took the money from Ripple and held him until police arrived, which wasn’t long, because Kansas City, Kan., police headquarters is on the same block.

When he was questioned later by investigators, Ripple told him that he and his wife had argued and he “no longer wanted to be in that situation,” according to the documents.

“Ripple wrote out his demand note in front of his wife … and told her he’d rather be in jail than at home,” an FBI agent wrote in the affidavit filed in support of the robbery charge.

Sounds like that is the worst punishment they could give him.

Old joke:

Why do men die before their wives?

They want to.

A very nice color coordinated mug shot. His eyes even match the wall.
I do feel sorry for the dude...He’s wearing a plaid shirt.

Slap on the wrist, sent back to his wife. I betcha.

That would be cruel and unusual punishment.

My ex-stepfather (69 at the time and escaped Serbia under Tito - lived in camps etc), hit a bicyclist (the guy wasn’t hurt he did this as an insurance scam). My stepfather then drove into the parking lot nearby and went in a restaurant to call the police. He was arrested for ‘hit and run’. A young zealous prosecutor was going to ‘make an example of him’, until my stepfather told his defense attorney he did not intend to leave but went to get help but since decided jail would be better than the nursing home his daughter (my evil stepsister) was going to put him in and no worse than life under Tito. The defense attorney told the judge and prosecutor and at the prosecutor’s recommendation the judge game him a fine instead.

Yes they would and its not a community property state so she would get at least half. I know women who have taken men for their entire farms. They marry, stay about 10 years then divorce. One woman has made a living doing it - and I cannot figure out why men still marry her.

My husband and I got married in CA (Community property state) but my grandfather still insisted he sign a prenup (which ticked off my inlaws until they moved to SoDak and realized why he was so insistent). And for the life of me, I don’t get why more men don’t insist on one.

Why punish the wife? He looks like an old sour puss. Couldn’t even manage a smile for his supposed win-win.

Sometimes the romancing has to be leavened with proper financing. Somebody has to risk ‘spoiling the mood’ at least for an hour or two till the papers are signed.

Like the joke goes: Old men only need Viagra because old women are so damn ugly.

I was surprised at how few of his cartoons come up on a google image search. Someone somewhere is very anal.

Yes indeed. I searched online a long time for just a couple of his short humor essays, couldn’t find them. A real shame

Since his intent was not to permanently deprive the bank of its money, the only charge that will stick is assault with a deadly weapon.
