Some of Britain’s best-loved and most watched programmes, including EastEnders and Coronation Street, are to be monitored for their ethnic, gender and sexual orientation diversity as part of a new scheme to be rolled out eventually across the whole of British television.

I’ve never minded when actors of different races play traditionally “white” roles, or when male roles are filled by women. Sometimes that can add an interesting new twist on a classic play or movie. But I am sure that the BBC PC police are going to enact this policy in a way that completely dumbs down and ruins a lot of shows.

They already shove it in when they feel like it - one show I was watching had a woman in a hijab and a little person in a wheelchair, both working in the same police station.
Some pertinent points.
The BBC is what PBS would dearly love to be, a instinctive leftist (socialist) NGO paid for by a tax upon every British household that has devices able to receive or record live television broadcasts. It has a great desire to go from being an instrument of information to being George Orwell’s Ministry of Truth, and this is a step in that direction.
The leftist mania for diversity is a natural and organic outcome of multiculturalism and political correctness. It almost always starts with an innocuous documentation of demographics and statistics but it always grows from that. I have little doubt that the BBC will move to require proper diversities as this effort matures. Think how great Monty Python COULD have been with proper diversity!
Yet, the very real truth of this kind of effort is that it can feel artificial and when done with the usual leftist authoritarianism, can become bizarre and repressive. When, as a logical progression can visualize, a British population of Chinese-ancestry Suffis become prominent enough, will the BBC mandate a member of that population in the hit series; “So You Want to be the Archbishop?”
Good thing Benny Hill isn’t still on.

Whatever entity decided this was a good idea should be monitored constantly for stupidity and for danger to British society.

I stopped watching Downton Abbey when the story line turned to a gay love story.
Just when you’re enjoying the plot, then they interject some not-so-plausible story line.
I stopped when Mrs. Banks was brutally raped. She was such a sweet person, and so in love with her husband.
Every show has to be 1/3 African, 1/3 Hispanic, 1/3 Far Asian, 1/3 Indian, 1/3 Middle Eastern, and 1/18 White.
