Also recall the history of Arlington National Cemetery.
I think Montreal is still paying for their Olympics
And just think of the carbon footprint of these games!
More than ever it is apparent that the Olympics are scam designed to create great profits for the elites and to screw the common man.
The history of Arlington? You mean the part where they stole a man’s land and filled with dead soldiers as a slap in his face?
The War of Northern Aggression has a lot of abhorrent history, perpetrated by both sides, but really mostly the north.
Citizens of third world hellholes et al are granted the privilege of allowing their corrupt elites to look BIG on the world state. It's ‘THE TACKY CLINTONS’ writ large...
This is why I think that individual sport permanent venues should be established worldwide. (Or use venues that are already in existence)
USA get basketball.
Russia gets track
Europe gets soccer.
Australia gets swimming.
Or something like that.
Stop this drain of taxpayer money and just let the athletes compete.
This is an incredible waste. They should at least hold it at the same place more than once.
Sarajevo kind of gets a pass. Berlin is a whole other story altogether.
And anything before the 80s cant really be expected to last forever. However, Munich’s Olympic park has seemed to have held up quite well and actually doesn’t look dated.
When beach volleyball and golf are considered Olympic sports and the biggest concern seems to involve providing adequate condoms, could it be that the Olympics have outlived their time?
MANY of those things could have been repurposed for local civilian uses with a little creativity and some advance planning of the locations chosen.
This is just wasteful.
The Winter Olympic facilities at Park City, Utah are still being used for training and are in fine condition. That’s probably one of the exceptions.
I’m for moving it back to Greece. For perpetuity. It would be a huge shot in the arm for the Greek economy, gets the Games back to their historic founding site, and the permanent infrastructure would be kept up nice there. It’s the moving around that create the problems cited in this article.
The Olympics should be in the U.S. because most of the facilities are already in use by Universities. And for big events? We can use our football stadiums and basketball/hockey stadium. While in other countries, they have to build them from scratch and then abandon them after the Olympics end.
It might be better to just keep the summer Olympics in Greece for good and find one perfect place for the winter Olympics. Keep the facilities up and make them a quality destination. Just a thought.
Didn’t most of the Olympic venues in America keep getting used for other things.
I was just at the kayaking facility in Ocoee is still being used and fairly popular.
The site in Guangzhou, China is still looking fantastic. Visited last year. An amazing city.
Your tax dollars at work.
The construction from 1936 seems to have held up
fairly well.
In the future archeologists will wonder at the remaining
concrete structures and make wild guesses as to their
meanings and use. Perhaps for some kind of games or
religious ceremonies?
Really some of them, like the flag poles and such are
quite sculptural just by themselves.
I live near Atlanta, where the Olympics were held 20 years ago. We’ve actually made great use of the Olympic facilities here.
I assume most Olympic venues become useless or under-utilized after a few years. Not so in Atlanta, which is good. :-)
Brazil got to the decaying stage before the Olympics even started.
