[VANITY] How many of us are watching NBC's horrid coverage of the Horrid Rio Olympic Opening Ceremon
(Vanity) NBC Commercial Extravaganza of advertising | August 5, 2016 | Swordmaker

Posted on 08/05/2016 9:11:18 PM PDT by Swordmaker

NBC is interrupting the coverage of the opening ceremonies ever few minutes for at least three minutes of really BAD advertisements. But then the opening ceremonies are pretty bad themselves. . . among the worst of the modern era.

How many of our Fellow Freepers are finding this as off-putting as I am?

Then the Brazilians used it for a huge propaganda push for the dire consequences of Global Warming, not even "Climate Change!" Good Grief. . .

Once they got to the part about the theme of the Olympics was man made global warming, I turned it off. I could only stand so much hypocrisy. Besides, it was boring.

In the words of NBC’s analysts (and indeed, everyone on the DNC’s mailing list...) this is a dark, dark opening ceremony, full of references to slavery, global warming, deforestation, overcrowding, urbanization...

Not to mention the awful carbon footprint of all those who attended the games, and the fireworks constantly going off, which of course releases even more awful chemicals, pollutants and greenhouse gasses.

In what should be a uniting moment for the world, Brazil delivers rainstorms in stairwells.

I’m fine with that and I’m kinda’ glad I got your hackles up over it.

Just consider this. On every thread that mentions what’s on TV someone almost always chimes in with, “I don’t watch TV Blah blah blah... And it’s always to imply that we’re all stupid for watching TV and somehow, they’re better than us idiots who do. that’s the implication and it’s ridiculous and tiresome.

I’m just one of the one’s here who will point out that we couldn’t care less whether you or anyone else watches or reads anything. The thread was about who’s watching the stupid Olympic coverage, not about those who aren’t.

I’ll keep on doing this to all the “I don’t watch TV dorks” who trash threads of people who do.

Oh you so superior people who haven’t turned on TV in 2 years. You’re so much better than us inferior folks who like to stay abreast of things by flipping around the tube.,

Someone's scared cow get poked?

Just admit your addiction, many have it. You probably get every reference to that Stein*** something TV show that FReepers are always posting. I am always mystified.

Many of us just find most of TV execrable and miserable to watch with all the commercials, PC BS, etc. You apparently find it fine. No excuse to dump on those that refuse to watch it.

I actually like the athlete’s walk.

It’s refreshing to see so many countries and people with smiles on their faces. Gives me some hope.

I especially like the smaller countries and their contingents. The native dress and all!

Thanks for the news that NBC is plastering the show with ads. I’m not watching and have zero desire to watch. NBC paid a ton to show the Olympics. Bad investment. Greece should always host the Olympics to boost its tourism.

All I’m trying to say is we couldn’t care less whether you watch any TV or not and the reply wasn’t pertinent to the thread and subject at hand... At all

Sorry you don’t get that.

I personally can’t stomach television at all. Most people who feel as I do look at television less as real information and more as programming. That is, being shown what someone wants you see in the way they want you to see it. We view it as a waste of time.

But I am sure you already know all that. Television is fine for at least two types of people: Those who just absorb it all with no discrimination at all (and there is a huge number of them) and those who see it with a jaundiced eye but can continue to watch, which I assume you do.

The difference is (I presume) that you are still able to view it with a discriminating and jaundiced eye, whereas many of use who view it in that fashion simply can’t watch it any more.

Nope, I skipped (no DVR either)...went out for dinner & the local farmer’s market. I heard some details in advance like “supermodel parades around and gets mugged”...was enough for me to skip w/o a second thought.

The last Olympics I watched avidly was the 1976 Winter Olympics. Then the 1980 Winter Olympics hockey only.

It seemed to change after that, and once professionals began participating, I stopped altogether. My wife still loves them, though.

I forced myself to watch part of the opening ceremony, those had to be some of the gaudiest outfits I’ve ever seen in my life.

I’ve been reading through the earlier thread. . . and apparently we West Coasters were spared something inflicted on the East Coasters: an appearance by Obambi! Did I just miss it? I admit I did take a bathroom break and maybe he snuck in while i was on the throne. . .

Most people I know don’t watch much television. I do. I watch a lot of tvland, some hallmark, Id channel(love Joe Kenda),Fox. Heck, I watch Naked and Afraid. I sometimes wonder how tv stays viable when so many people don’t watch.

That’s tits, then. We agree the Olympic coverage is way overdone, just to sell advertising. I hope somebody develops AdBlock for TV...

“...both the silver and bronze medals will be awarded posthumously in the Bullet Dodging competition.”

I don’t mean to nitpick Bob, But it seems to me that anyone winning a medal posthumously didn’t do that good in the Bullet DODGING competition!

I only use my t.v to watch dvd. I heard the ceremony sucked. Have the damned thing in Greece permanently. Africa is going to want a turn next if they can find a crap hole that could put on a show.

I never watch the Olympics. Boring bunch of crap. Stupid sports, like synchronized walking, synchronized swimming, and synchronized jumping jacks. Just my luck that this year there will probably be sharks in the bay feasting off the trash, and I will miss them eating the swimmers. And who would even go to RIO unless they had a death wish and wanted to die of some weird STD, or toxic bacteria in the water. Bah humbug.
