A newspaper in Memphis quickly apologize after protestors complained about its choice of headline in the wake of the deadly police shooting in Dallas.
“Gunman targeted whites,” read the lead story headline in the Commercial Appeal, a member of the USA Today network. The headline was accurate, as Dallas gunman Micah Xavier Johnson explicitly talked about wanted to kill white police officers before he was eliminated via robot bomb.

Is it racist then when reporting a crime and the race is not mentioned hinting (darkly) that the perpetrator was black?

Newspaper apologizes for publishing the truth instead of a lie. I can’t say that I’m surprised.
Who would have known? Is Memphis one of those places where truth is unwelcome?
One of the protest leaders, Pastor Earle Fisher of the Memphis Grassroots Organization Coalition, said following a meeting with Commercial Appeal {Newspaper} employees that the situation highlighted “the need for cultural sensitivity training.”

The propagandistic left never wants to allow the Sheeple to have all the real facts to make up their own minds. Similar to the French authorities who decided to cover up the torture and mutilations at Bataclan in Paris, last November. We don’t want the Sheeple to know the facts if they might get riled up against BLM or Islamists or..... another politically protected group.
Bingo - every news story I’ve read re: crime that when the race is not mentioned it’s a black. The stories have in the first line ‘white’ ....then too, ever notice in those ID theft and home break-in adverts it’s always a white guy shown? No black no Hispanic no Asian. I thought diversity was the key word and equal opportunity in media and all that...

Of course if it was a white person who stated he was targeting blacks and they didn’t report it, they would be up i arms about that as well.
