New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I’m still tired. I got the van inspected. I keep sending the byos back upstairs to clean up their room so I can vacuum it.

If Tom doesn’t get home in time, I’m going to send Bill to get Elen, I think. I’ll give him gas money.

See? I just took a 40 minute nap because I was crashing and burning.

When I come in from being with the peeps, I’ll make a little breakfast burrito. I’ve found that one egg and one slice of bacon or one sausage patty with cheese and a handful of chopped bell pepper is plenty big enough to fill me up. That should keep me going until my yogurt at bedtime. (And they are MUCH tastier than the ones McDonald’s makes!)

Tomorrow, I’ll have to go get $5 worth of quarters for Monday. I’m glad payday is just around the corner. I haven’t been this low on quarters for a long time. It’s a good thing I can hang the stuff up this time.

Nearly Had a snow event means they had snow in Poughkeepsie (which is pronounced PoughKIHPsee for reasons I cannot fathom) which is close enough to NYC that one of our cow-orkers commutes from there (granted, for a long time each way).

Poughkeepsie (which is pronounced PoughKIHPsee for reasons I cannot fathom)

Probably how the IndiansNative Americans pronounced it.

Or the Dutch.

Or they were never taught phonics.

Or just because they can.

After all, they have a New Haven Railroad, er, Conrail bridge, er walkway over the Hudson..

A commute from/to Poughkeepsie each day certainly would be a healthy hike. I would assume he/she does the Metro North thing rather than drive..

I have this recurring nightmare that the two major parties in the US have nominated Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton for President.

Fortunately when I wake up I realize how stupid that is and I calm down pretty quickly.

I would be glad to wake up RIGHT NOW.

He does do the Metro North thingie and, so far, has managed to avoid the ones that tend to run into things or go around curves too fast.

That fire that broke out near me yesterday started in the living room of a first floor apartment. The couple that was staying there was awakened and managed to flee through the living room. But they left the door open which allowed the fire to spread so quickly.

The actual apartment owners are in Mexico and get to come home to a big surprise tonight.

One man was rescued from the 5th floor. A fireman was let down from the roof by rope to get him and then carried him to the ground. The rope apparently burned through as they reached the ground. Which is just WOW!

Now, back to your regularly scheduled boredom.

I’m turning more to Gmail for graphics and photos, because Yahoo is so difficult to get a printed product from.

Right now, I feel like all computers (and especially this one) are my enemies. GAH!

Finding my documents is a job for Superman.
