New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

If you asked my mom’s dad his age he’d say, “I’m as old as my tongue and a little bit older than my teeth.”

Of course, he would also regularly ask the ladies if they’d ever kissed a man with a beard. He’d say, “You know what they say. You have to go through a lot of brush to get to a good picnic.”

Did you ever try a mustache?

Not that you don’t look fine now. It’s just, well, you know ...

I wish I had a pencil-thin mustache.

Yes, we nearly had a snow event at humble DSNY today.

And we didn’t make the roll-out of the snow-enabled sw this afternoon.

No pressure.

One April one of our cow-orkers brought in some leftover birthday cake from his daughter’s birthday.

Only one of us knew her birthday had been in February.

Oh, yeah, it was an April 1.

I’m glad you didn’t have snow. I’m sure that would be unpleasant.

I have to go put on my Administrative Witch costume now. With pearls, of course.

What constitutes a ‘nearly had’ snow event? Someone told Warren Wilhelm Jr. that it was snowing upstate?

Oh, golly. I’m up before the catz photo. I’ll go take a shower and see if the kittehs are magically here when I get out.

(That’s what I get for getting up so early.)

Yep. Just like magic!

And I’m off to Wally’s for a few things I need for the hypoglycemia. I just can’t do the high/crash thing another day.

Good plan. Tom has gone to school, and I’ll have to take Elen later.

Back from Walmart. I had enough left to get some water, but I didn’t know that until I got home and looked at the receipt.

Now I want to get warm. They had the market entrance closed off, so I had to make several detours to get to the produce section and the deli, and they moved the bread again. *sheesh* All that exercise made me sweaty because the humidity is up, so I’m damp. My wool rug smells like wet dog.

I’ll go have a breathing treatment and see if my outlook is better.

It turns out Bill can take Elen to school, so I’ll have a shower and then get the remaining Offspring organized.

You’re not a typical soccer mom. You’re a soccer-and-swimming-and-cub scouts-and-church mom.

I suspect, if she were a typical soccer mom, she would have been done in a long time ago. As it is, she keeps up with even the slyest of her offspring. AND the Cub Scouts! ;o]

Yep, a little of everything. Except soccer.

I’m tired already. My dreams were exhausting, something to do with trying to go on a river cruise (like my Mom), only children - mine and others’ - kept showing up. Children and exotic pets.

Once the kids’ breakfast is complete, we’ll get the candy and stuff from last night out of the van. Each child can choose a few pieces, and I’ll take the rest of it back to church tomorrow for people to hand out at “Trunk or Treat.”

Kathleen is confused about the date: she thought yesterday was Hallowe’en, because of the party, so she expected her November calendar picture this morning.

I haven’t liked any of my dreams the last few nights, and they don’t seem to be getting any better.

It was hard to fall asleep last night, even though I was tired. This morning, I was awake at 0300...ungh. The shower didn’t do much to help me wake up, but I’m here, and have sorted my pills for the next five days. Next is to fill the ice cube trays and maybe have another breathing treatment. This damp weather is not helping me.

The barometer is still falling and the storm glass still has crystals, so I’m not optimistic about weather for the next few days. The only good thing is the Galileo, coming in at a whopping 80 degrees. Of course, it’s next to two lamps...
