Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Hallowe’en is Tom’s birthday. He will be 20 this year.
Yesterday I saw a car with a bumper sticker on it that said, “Proud Democrat.” I wanted to put a letter under the windshield wiper that said after Democrats made a feeble economy normal, destroyed health insurance, and created a refugee crisis of Biblical proportions, the buper sticker made him look like an idiot.
Nov 30 is my older brudder’s birthday. He will be 59 this year.
Nah. They do this every year in the Fall, and they bus seniors from the various elder communities to a “seminar,” where they get a goody bag with lots of useless advertising gimmicks.
It’s been held as early as September to as late as November. And it would seem the attendance has grown. Good. I have a hard time identifying with most of the folks. They don’t seem to believe I’m “old enough” to attend. Ha-ha.
There are several of the peeps (female) who show their ages moreso than I do. They think I’m a “kid” with nothing going for me. They make me laugh when they ask my age. Their reactions are hilarious!
Tom? Twenty? Whoa! It’s nice that you let him live that long... ;o]
My brothers have birthdays two days apart, in August. One is four years older than the other. The eldest looks like he has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. The youngest could be my twin. Except that I don’t have a mustache.
I'm known for my niceness.
Tom cleaned the ceiling fan in the living room this morning, using his Helpful Height.
Yes, I agree with Tom’s Helpful Height. My mother thought my height was helpful, as well, when the boys left home. (She was about your height.)
Now I have a tool for grabbing things I can’t reach. My mother would have traded me for one, I’m sure. ;o]
I would trade Tom for a house where everything was my height ;-).
It’s difficult to try and cook when all the counters and appliances were made for shorter people.
But I’ve adapted...microwave and toaster oven whenever possible!
It is raining.
It is 92% humid. Relatively.
It is glomy. (That's a shade worse than gloomy because when you step out in it the gloom gloms onto you due to the humidity. Relatively.)
It is snowing in Albany. Or so indicates the weather radar thing.
All the screens are raised and the storm windows have been lowered.
The heat is on.
And it's not even November yet.
Spell chequer doesn't know in glomy should have one or two 'm's. Matter of fact, it doesn't know what 'glomy' is even after I defined it..
It is 74 and cloudy here in Boring. Tomorrow is supposed to be 77 and sunny. Saturday is supposed to be 80 and sunny. The forecast shows upper 70s or 80s for the next week. I’m glad I don’t have to turn on the furnace yet.
I think Spelchequer is sadly over-rated. And I like the word “glomy,” but is that a long “O”?
It’s been that way here for several days, and I noticed yesterday that there was snow on Mt Charleston. It’s beautiful, but it’s far too early for that. Usually it snows there in late November or early December, if we get the right storms.
I’ve been fighting with my printer today, trying to figure out how to replace the ink cartridge (Black) and had to search for the manual and download it, and now my brems is tard.
Is it summer, yet?
I’m sure I will be using the space heater, soon, if for nothing else than to dry out the place. I not only have the blinds open, but I have three lights on; two here at the desk and one by the recliner. And it’s still glomy.
My stomach is upset, and that makes me unhappy.
I’m sure it will be glomy here eventually, but not this month, if one can believe the Weather Channel. Tom is trying to figure out how he can get cake from the Cub Scouts’ party without actually going to the Cub Scouts’ party. I’m refusing to guarantee any cake for him unless he’s there for the whole time.
“What time is the cake being served?”
“I don’t know - whenever we decide.”
“Will you save me some?”
“Of course not. If you’re not there and the Cubs eat it all, cebu.”
I’ll save him some. But he has to wait until I’m darn good and ready to give it to him. ;o]
I suspect he will attend or go without.
And now, my upset stomach is making me really miserable, so I’m going to go to bed and read. My lunch didn’t agree with me at all.
It could be but then you lose the connection to the verb 'glom' which is something like what Bill Clinton (or Joe Biden) does to females. You know. They glom onto them.
To make it officially a long O would require the 'oa' combo wouldn't it? (Plus it would need to be twilight... ;-)
Full Definition of glom \ˈgläm\
transitive verb
1 : take, steal
2 : seize, catch
Kewl. I got it. Glom it is. ;o]
And now, I’m off...
“Glom” should get more use.
Hope you have a good night.
