New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Ah yes, that Cat.
The one that ran off with the Classified Ads section.

So let me see....the Unexpected Rhesus Monkey has us cornered between a comfortable Chair with a Classified Advert reading Cat in it and a Table with an Artistically inclined Cat sat on it.
Hmm, this is tougher than playing chess with Gary Kasparov.

Wine we can afford, not what’s advertised in the WSJ along with houses bigger than my whole neighborhood.

A Drunk Rhesus monkey in the house....
This could be a laugh, I’ll get a spare keyboard plugged in.

LOL! We can set him up as an election blogger ... we’ll be a sensation! Jake and Shannon get in a knock-down drag-out over Trump (Jake likes him, but Shannon thinks he’s tacky), and the monkey does the play-by-play.

And post the whole thing in Breaking News.

There we go, we’ve “Castled the King” and survived the logic attack from the Drunken unexpected Rhesus Monkey by giving him a job to do.
The Cats Discuss politics in good old traditional FR style ,with a Knock-down and Drag-out. So we can slink off into a quiet corner and enjoy our Yogurt in peace.

Perfect end to a perfect day!

I’m going to get pajamas on and find out why four children are Suspiciously Quiet. Hope you have a good night and a good tomorrow!

I fear the Little Red Riding Thing is down for the count.

I will attempt to give it a stern talking to again in the daylight, but it just might have finally succumbed to its ingestion of assorted carburetor parts two summers ago.

Or it just might be that I tried to do a quick-and-dirty valve adjustment by braille without taking the cowling off so I could actually see what I was doing. Except that it did not appear to need a valve adjustment when I opened it up..

I will strip it of its clothing, er, cowling when I revisit it and see if it can be resurrected. Again.

Aside: When it ingested its assorted carburetor parts and I rebuilt the carburetor I opted not to remove the head to see what really happened fearing that if I did it would never run again. Up till now it has been starting but using lots of oil - an indication that it was on borrowed time.

I’ve been searching replacement engines on Ebay.. A new one costs the same as what I paid for the entire Red Riding Thing sevenish years ago but I found a used one 3/4 of the way across PA for a more reasonable fee.. Probably get that one if things don’t get rosier in the daylight.

I did look for decent used riding mowers within 150 miles (that’s about all the farther I want to go to pick one up towing my trailer, and out beyond a hundred miles it needs to be a really really really good deal) but nothing of note surfaced.

Well, that is very sad news. It’s unfortunate that it would give up the ghost just when you needed to mow, too.

The history of the Finno-Ugric language studies is rather like the Hundred Years War raging in a very tiny segment of a small segment of academia. It's a swamp last I heard.

Finns and Estonians understand one another but, IIRC, Hungarians do not. Hungarian was at one time classed as a branch of the Turkic group. I lost track after Pete departed. I do recall that Hungarian had a complex grammer with something like 18 noun cases....

You spoke of monsoons. Are they anything such as this one viewed from a news helicopter over Phoenix?

Since there were no news bulletins on Drudge, I assumed that none of your cats were involved in trampolining.

Rubbing a ballon over a cats fur to show the effects of static electricity is all well and good. Huge rubber drum heads, well, things happen.

What a pain.
Here’s hoping for a simple ,quick fix. (Fingers crossed).

That picture over Phoenix looks like something Biblical.
