The history of the Finno-Ugric language studies is rather like the Hundred Years War raging in a very tiny segment of a small segment of academia. It's a swamp last I heard.

Finns and Estonians understand one another but, IIRC, Hungarians do not. Hungarian was at one time classed as a branch of the Turkic group. I lost track after Pete departed. I do recall that Hungarian had a complex grammer with something like 18 noun cases....
