Uber is coming under increased scrutiny after leaked documents indicated their drivers really dont make all that much money.
Ive been saying this for a while, its an Uber disappointment, explained driver Kelsey Tilander

Isn’t that true of any profession?
“See, I Told You So” = “SITYS”
In the Obama economy, too many people are looking for a job, any job. At least they are making a minimum wage in the cities that are being mentioned. What is that, $15 an hour now?
Wow - so you can’t get rich driving people around in your car-—in San Francisco.
This is a fake story - pushed by cab companies and government control freaks.
Uber is not full time work - it’s a part time gig meant to supplement your income.
My husband drove for Uber after he lost his job. Minimum wage?? You couldn’t even ask Uber for 3 bucks after the passenger stubbed out his cigarette on the leather upholstery. Or demand payment from the deer that took off the fender when he was driving around in the middle of the night while the drunk passenger tried to remember where the next bar was.
Luckily, we recovered financially. Say no to Uber, drivers!
And drivers are only placeholders until the self driving cars take over.
I had no experience with uber till a recent trip to Dallas. We used it exclusively to get around albeit we had a rental car. I could not believe how inexpensive it was. The advantage of using it was to not worry about parking, not worry about running into something or someone in a strange city and not worrying about the coppers pulling me over for DUI.
My sister in law was aghast I tipped the driver a good deal, which she did not offer to share beyond the fare. She, a democrat, said they discourage tipping. I pointed out there is almost no way the driver is making much more than a few dollars an hour NET. I added, I don’t believe in slave wages and a wage I know you would never work for. She is still miffed. So be it.
It’s amazing you can find an Uber driver anywhere, given your depiction of how poorly they treat their drivers. Please tell us how Uber continues to exploit and extort them!
+100
And neither should be burger flipping at fast foods.
Uber also does not permit Guns in the cars.......The cars that are actually owned by the driver!
F uber!
The only way I think you could make decent money with Uber is to qualify for the "black car" rate -- i.e. the limo service. And then, Uber would be only one source of bookings.
For the rest, it's a part-time income supplement. I've only used Uber a few times, but the young college student working a few hours in the afternoon was the most enthusiastic. He said that he really liked the flexibility to chose when and how long to work. And, he could sit in his car and study during downtime.
A relative of a good friend drives for Uber for extra income: he saved the money for a downpayment on a condo. He still does it occasionally, and says he can make from $100 to $300 a day. But, I've always wondered if he is accounting for the gas and wear and tear on his car.
I would keep careful track of the mileage, and subtract out the IRS allowance for mileage expense from any income -- not just for taxes, but to estimate how much I was actually netting from driving for Uber.
Who checks?
Some rules were made to be broken.
We can't pick our born-into family, but we can pick our own family and friends.
I spent too much of my life trying to get along/bending over backwards to mollify ill-intended family members (who were only ever jealous, but I couldn't fully see it).
NPR will eventually do a story on uber and how much drivers make. They have asked drivers to send in their “timecard & pay stub” which apparently is on their smartphone.
And I should care because...?
Quit moaning and find something else to do.
That is the big reason I didn’t drive for them a year or two ago when I was out of work.
It’s my car, my life. I’m paying all expenses but I can’t have my gun in the car because...Uber
But, but, if you are a “world class speed skater”, you can use Uber as a source of income because of the freedom it gives you - I’ve seen the commercials.....
I didn’t say they extorted them - they just are a lousy company to work for. Oh, right, I forgot! One is an independent contractor not an employee. Although they set the rules about no-tipping and are the ones who actually give one the jobs.
The worst thing they do is give hopeful, unemployed people an idea that you can make 60,000 dollars a year with them - that’s one of their ad campaigns. Of course, we never believed that but to lure desperate people into believing that...
Any "job" where a person uses their own car extensively (UBER, pizza delivery, etc.) is nothing more than a way of slowly extracting the capital from their asset.
Drivers may think they are being paid for their time, but the reality is that they are putting enough wear on their cars that they are lowering its value by as much as they are making.
As a short-term stopgap measure in desperate times, this may be a way to make ends meet, but it does not substitute for a real job. What happens when the car requires an expensive repair and the driver can not pay for it?
