Here's an interesting exchange between NBC News and former Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz that happened just now:
NBC: Donald Trump's remarks about Judge Curiel, are his concerns legitimate?
Cruz: Of course it's inappropriate to be attacking a federal judge's race or ethnicity. You're going to have ask Donald to explain the reason he says the things he does. I'm not going to try to do so.
NBC: Ben Sasse said that what Donald Trump said about the judge is pure definition of racism. Is Donald Trump a racist?
Cruz: As I said, it is obviously inappropriate to attack a judge's race or ethnicity. Beyond that, you're going to have to ask Donald.
NBC: (As Cruz walks away): Last question Senator, can you fathom though still at this point supporting Donald Trump in November?
(No response -- goes into office)

This presidential election, like most others, is going to be all about winning over the wishy washies. I think Trump can do it. Then again, I think he can blow it as well.....
Uh huh. Sure. The folks like you are "running" with the media but ya don't have zip and are running in circles. Who gives a damn what Trump said about a racist judge who has clear corrupt conflicts of interest and very questionable associates? Get real.
No, he didn't. He actually reinforced it my point.
Without context, there is nothing objectionable about belonging to a Latino lawyers association. It's common, and will get no traction with anyone.... unless of course it's the "white lawyers association". You and I don't have to like that double standard, but it's just the way it is.
And Trump isn't going to get a judge to recuse himself on that basis. He has to show how the judge might be swayed by the stated position and affiliations of the organization. And there's plenty of evidence for that, but have you heard anything about it outside the conservative blogosphere?
BTW, "La Raza Lawyers of San Diego" (to which Curiel belongs) and "National Council of La Raza" (the organization that many consider to be "La Raza") aren't the same organization.
But, I'm bringing this up so that you are armed with the facts if someone points out the difference. The website clearly links the two:
San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association
Check out the "community" links on the left. You'll find a long list of organizations. It doesn't take much effort at all to link some of them to anti-Trump sentiment.
This is what Trump should have done at the outset.
Maybe Trump is counting on the Democratic race picking up more attention and this retreating into the semi background. I have no idea but my sense is his surrogates are not going to feel as comfortable in calling the judge a hater and biased because of being Mexican as he is.
And, there's your problem: hardly anyone knows this. The media certainly isn't going to tell them.
All they are repeating is "Mexican heritage".
You can "win ugly" if you choose your weapons carefully.
Good weapons are: "conflict of interest", "questionable associations".
Bad weapons are: "He's Mexican".
LaRaza Lawyers not layers. Maybe you could post lying La Raza Lawyer.
Well Sen(at)or Cruz did get his fingers stuck in the five layer dip with his reflexive instinct to attack Trump regardless of the facts at hand.
The Las refuge of a bitter, principled conservative is freely using liberal talking points.
I'm not buying a thing. And obviously, neither are you. But, we are only two votes.
Look, I can make my point really easily with a simple exercise: Go out on a street corner and ask 10 random people what they know about Trump's dispute with a judge.
I'd be really surprised if a single person knew anything more than "Trump thinks he is biased because he's Mexican".
I don't like it, and neither do you. But, it's reality.
We can't change this. Trump can, but he has to be more careful.
I wish Cruz would put his snake oil in storage, iron and hang up his jeans and GO AWAY. As usual, the twerp is wrong. Just like when he supported BLM against Trump.
Absolutely.
But, here's the thing: Almost everyone knows what the KKK stands for.
Almost no one knows what the "Latino lawyer's association" stands for.
Trump is again daring to start a discussion where liberals dont want a discussion held.
Good, let's start the discussion. But Trump led with "his Mexican heritage", not "La Raza Lawyers of San Diego", or "affiliated with organizations that are actively opposing my candidacy".
I appreciate that Poster!! Man did I just fire that all over the political world. This Judge is a racist!!NOT TRUMP!!
White judges can’t be in the KKK but Hispanics can join the Klan with a Tan aka La Raza
Why the heck doesn’t Trump use the judge’s race-based scholarship awards, including awards to illegal immigrants? And the judge’s activism with La Raza Lawyers Assn in favor of illegal immigration/immigrants? That’s grounds for the judge’s recusal. Is his research staff that bad? Does he even have a research staff?
You are correct. Trump and his supporters have done nothing to point out the judge’s actual conflicts associated with membership in La Raza Lawyers Assn.
Being a member of a race based association already raises serious red flags for any normal person and proves Trump's point. This is why your argument is so weak. Just because people might not be familiar with La Raza doesn't change that. It's enough to know it's a race based organizatio, likely political, and, if anything, it will only get worse as people begin to look up La Raza to discover the full scope of their activities.
Most normal people think to themselves: 'okay, so is he really biased?" And they will discover that quite easily despite the media never telling the truth about anything.
unless of course it's the "white lawyers association"
Since leftists are OK with La Raza, The Black Panthers, etc., I think it's time conservatives started establishing white associations to defend white interests. Blacks and Hispanics will always look out for their interests before that of the nation. Just whining about leftist identity politics isn't working. It's time to confront them to their faces and use it right back at them. Decades of leftist voting proves that there will never be some magical Republican candidate who will ever win a majority of their vote-- though Trump will probably get a larger chunk than Romney.
When leftist talk about inherent white evil, conservatives should embrace it and defend their heritage and the accomplishments of their ancestors.
And Trump isn't going to get a judge to recuse himself on that basis.
It won't work because the supreme court ruled some time ago that you can't dispute people on your jury based on their skin color (if my memory serves), even though it's common knowledge that lawyers LOVE majority black juries to try black criminals because of the well-known phenomena that they are extremely hesitant to convict a black defendant. Political correctness determines law-decisions, unfortunately.
Nevertheless, it doesn't change the fact that the judge cannot provide a fair trial. It's just that it's politically incorrect to conclude that Hispanic or black judges might be biased based on their ethnicity and membership in racist nationalist organizations.
Why the heck doesn’t Trump use the judge’s race-based scholarship awards, including awards to illegal immigrants? And the judge’s activism with La Raza Lawyers Assn in favor of illegal immigration/immigrants? That’s grounds for the judge’s recusal. Is his research staff that bad? someone needs to remind “La Raza” that America actually BOUGHT that part of the Country from Mexico, but that silly little fact doesn’t seem to get understood by those people.
