I live by myself and had been away from home for 12 hours. I often leave my home computer turned on even when I am gone. Last night, I noticed my computer screen was on and my computer was downloading Windows 10. I tried to stop it and, when I couldn't, I simply shut the computer off.
After turning it back on, it said "restoring to your previous version" and I'm now back to Windows 7. I noticed that somehow my update settings had all been changed to allow Microsoft maximum access and Windows 10 upgrade was now categorized as "important" rather than "recommended".
I caught the upgrade when it was at 12% so it had not reached the point of uninstalling so I suspect I have just a partial version on my hard drive that can't do anything.
Needless to say, I was furious so I contacted Microsoft support and gave "Andrew Z" a piece of my mind. It's one thing to ask me to upgrade. It's a whole 'nother thing to force the upgrade behind my back.
I turned off all Windows updates (not recommended) and told them I will switch when *I* think it's best, not when they do.
You’ve been Win Tenned!
RESISTANCE IS FUTILE
That’ll teach you to go get a beer. Think what they can do if you decide to make a sandwich too!
Windows 10 is better.
Just let it happen.
Youre going to have to get it eventually.
Resistance is futile.

Just lie back and enjoy it.
The computers have finally taken over. Help! I didn’t post that. Yes she did! No,no!
Thanks for the tip.
All in all, I'm very happy with the performance of Windows 10. Even my transition to 64-bit was seamless, with my Video Card, on-board sound and other devices all receiving 64bit driver support automatically as part of the install.
Yup!
It’s only a matter of time before you get a MONTHLY BILL for using MS products!
And probably not vary long.
That’s why I ALWAYS segregate my data from the OS. I can restore the OS any time I want.
It’s only painful at first.

For sure - we got a popup on our screen when we booted up a couple of days ago stating that someone somewhere had determined that because of the status of our current operating system, Microsoft was automatically going to install Windows 10 in our computer on May 18th at 11:00 PM - no ifs, ands, or buts - fortunately daughter who knows more about this stuff than I do found some small print toward the bottom of the screen allowing us to cancel the download, but it sure smacked of dictatorial desperation to me.....
Yes, exactly.
The VMS OS originated on VAX in the mid-/late-seventies was ported to DEC's Alpha architecture [circa 1992], then to Intel's Itanium [circa 2005]. (See here.)
I switched to Linux; and, now I wonder "what took me so long?".
Linux is pretty friendly depending on how you perform the installation. You can choose your desktop program, unlike with Microsoft.
Linux is also fully documented, complete with source code if you are that brazen. I switched to Linux; and, now I am quite happy with it. Linux is much more robust with respect to Microsoft.
That is the same situation I faced. I have device programmers, lab instrumentation, and exotic development tools. I dropped back to XP, and now run behind a Linux firewall. Everything is back to normal.
My upgrade from 8.1 (which I didn’t much like) to 10 took a long time (wireless) but was basically painless. Sometimes the wireless network search and grab is just non-functional, have to reboot. But that hasnt happened in a few weeks, perhaps one of those updates fixed it.
I wonder if it comes with EDT.
