Bush’s fault and climate change.
Bwaaaahaaaaaaa!
Yes. Also the National Cathedral and quite a few other buildings.
Post of the day.
Yikes! Living in Florida may not be a safe as previously thought it to be. I can see this peninsula breaking off and dropping to the ocean bottom soon! And I thought that gators were something to be afraid of.
Yes.
But the region was built over the past billion years by periods of accretion, when new material is added to a plate, and rifting, when plates split apart.
It takes the kind of accretion created by the ponderous weight of sin to push DC into the fiery pit out of which its inhabitants crawled.
Please stop jumping up and down!
If only there were fracking in that region, we’d have that to blame and Bambi would be happy.
The earth is dying. GOD never created it to last forever.
LOL
What’s the mechanism? These quakes are relatively shallow, within <5-10 km, indicating crustal movements along strike- slip planes, whereas one should expect normal or thrust faulting and deeper foci if mantle slippage were the case. Besides, differentiation of mantle material in this regions has had a long time to isostasize.
I suspect these guys are just looking for grant money.
Al Gore is going to start selling earthquake credits. People in earthquake prone areas can buy them and sell them to people on terra firma. Of course Al Gore has to get his commission.
For about $200 Million Dollars even I can do an earthquake study, come up with a cool powerpoint presentation, get some hollyweird celebrities to say this is all caused by global warming and put some alphabet soup letters after my name so it all looks official.
So, the South won’t be rising again, eh?
Hysterics?
“The southeastern United States has been hit by a series of strange unexplained quakes - most recently, the 2011 magnitude-5.8 earthquake near Mineral, Virginia that shook the nation’s capital. Researchers have been baffled, believing the areas should be relatively quiet in terms of seismic activity, as it is located in the interior of the North American Plate, far away from plate boundaries where earthquakes usually occur. Now, they believe the quakes could be caused by pieces of the Earth’s mantle breaking off and sinking into the planet.”
Contrary to the article’s comment abut being in the interior of a continental plate, Mineral, Virginia, is located in the Appalachian Mountains, which came into existence because two continental plates collided at that location and created the mountain range. The relics of the old plate boundaries are still an area that produces a lessened amount of tectonic activity and associated earthquake activity along the old plate boundaries.
So, Earthquakes are caused by Tectonic Plates Falling Off of the Continental Shelf?
