According the the US Government's National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), some type of "event" in the ocean off the New Jersey coast triggered a Tsunami Buoy!
The buoy recorded sudden changes in water depth of fifty-five METERS (180 feet) in a matter of seconds.

An undersea earthquake can break them up and cause a big bubble to raise to the surface. All of a sudden your boat is airborne. Just the opposite. A vessel falls through the bubble.

The buoy recorded sudden changes in water depth of fifty-five METERS (180 feet) in a matter of seconds. Just off the continental shelf, I'd guess a submarine snagged the cable, and dragged the buoy underwater.

Actually have been present during a rogue wave hitting from astern and washing every item on deck to the superstructure. Viewed the activity from an aux. maneuvering station on the bridge level, during a materials transfer. A solo wave at least three times the average height preceded by an equally deep trough, dropped the stern sufficiently for the wave to top the fencing and ride the deck forward.
An interruption of the evolution had just occurred, and no crew were present in that area, so casualties were avoided. In this type of incident, there are no tattle tale signs before, or remnant changes afterward in the sea conditions. Rogue waves just happen, seemingly at random.

I hope it stays that way, there isn't much elevation between the beach on my South Jersey home! And more importantly, my wife asked if we should get flood insurance when we moved in and I said "this house is 50 years old and the beams in the crawl space are dry as a bone with no sign of water ever. We're not in a flood plane either. No way should we get flood insurance!" Since then we've had hurricanes and "super storms" pass through and my wife is always looking at me like "you'd better be right about this" and so far so good.
If we die in a tsumani tonight she'll never let me live it down!

Other than being near the sewer of NYC, not too sure where exactly NJ is (south?), but I see no events on the NOAA.GOV bouy site.................

That definitely falls under “pulling one out of your ass” in the government explanation department...

No way should we get flood insurance I know what you are thinking, but there are homeowners along the coast where I live that had their house float out to sea after a tsunami. At sea level to be sure.
Thought that hurricane Sandy trashed a bunch of places on the shore not long ago. Mebbe look into what sort of insurance (if any) covers that crap. We live 500' up so are not worried about sea surge damage.
We decided years ago to forego living in Florida due to the hurricane uncertainty (wanted to live on the coast). Bugs, snakes, and humidity we learned about later.

Everybody in New York City flushed the toilet at the same time? That is one hideous image..............
Even as a kid, visiting NYC seeing all those bee hive dwellings, I was aghast at the idea of all those masses of people crapping in such a congested area.
The concept of a sewer line able to cope with millions upon millions of NY'rs dumping was mind-damaging to a kid.....
