A key issue raised by labor unions in their weeklong strike against Verizon is the offshoring of work. The unions say Verizon has plans to send more jobs overseas. Verizon isn't saying what it is doing in this respect, but there is a paper trail of documents filed by its employees that point to offshoring.
The union contends that Verizon wants, in a labor contract, to shift more jobs to contractors. Nearly 40,000 Verizon workers are on strike.
"They want the ability to contract work -- as much as 50% -- the great majority of that is offshore," said Marilyn Irwin, president of the Washington area Communications Workers of America Local 2108. CWA is one of the unions involved in the strike.
This complaint is getting attention in the presidential race, including from U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is seeking the Democratic nomination.
"They want to outsource decent paying jobs," Sanders said at the Verizon picket line. Earlier this month, Sanders said Verizon wants to move call center jobs out of the country to places "where people will be paid pennies an hour."
Sander's criticisms of Verizon prompted a response by Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam in a blog post.
"Contrary to Sen. Sanders's contention," wrote McAdam, the proposal that Verizon is making to the union does "not call for mass layoffs or shipping jobs overseas. Rather, we've asked for more flexibility in routing calls and consolidating some of our call centers, some of which employ a handful of people."
Despite repeated attempts, Verizon did not respond to requests for comment.
Over the past several years, Verizon workers have been filing applications with the U.S. Labor Department for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) benefits. Employees who believe they have lost their jobs as a result of offshore outsourcing can file for benefits that include extended unemployment and educational help.
Verizon workers in multiple states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, New York and North Carolina, have filed claims. These can be filed by state labor officials or affected employees. A minimum of three affected workers must file the application, which, if approved, can make other affected employees at a worksite eligible for benefits as well.
For instance, in Lake Mary, Florida, employees wrote on their TAA application: "Verizon has been in the process of moving all production for all products off shore for the last few years. We were notified in April [2015] that all the remaining VOIP Order Management was being moved to Manila. Two VOIP order managers had been sent to Manila to train the new group. My group also had to train the offshore group to take over our job function. HR told me this was a massive layoff!"
In Texas, requests for benefits from employees have stated that "work was outsourced" to Manila. The employees said 20 workers lost their jobs.
In North Carolina, workers also cited Manila, and said 11 jobs were lost in that state.
A New York, a TAA petition filed by IT workers said: "Due to a reduction in force, our jobs were eliminated. However, the function continues offshore."
He lied to the people of Texas in 2012 when he failed to mention that he was still a Canadian citizen while running for the Senate. He lied about cashing in the family savings to run for the Senate when he actually got loans from GS and Citibank to finance his campaign. He is still refusing to disclose the terms of those loans to the FEC. He lied when he said his family lost their health insurance because of Obamacare and had to later admit they did not. There is a youtube video out of Cruz lying about Trump 6 times in 4 minutes during a speech.
Ted Cruz Lies SIX Times in Under Four Minutes!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwIHJhtTSLg
But if you want to pretend Ted Bush is not a liar, go right ahead.
There are more but I don’t feel like searching now.
The fact is that Cruz was for increasing H1B visas 500%, doubling legal immigration and taking in Syrian refugees until he changed those positions late last year because of the Trump effect. Cruz was all for Obamatrade until he changed that position a couple of weeks ago. Cruz has flip flopped a lot and more recently than Trump.
RE: He lied to the people of Texas in 2012 when he failed to mention that he was still a Canadian citizen while running for the Senate
The Constitution only requires that a Senator be a U.S. citizen for 9 years and be 30 years old. Nowhere is that amended to require single citizenship. A Representative only needs to be 25 and have been a citizen for 7 years. Where’s the lie?
RE: He lied about cashing in the family savings to run for the Senate when he actually got loans from GS and Citibank to finance his campaign.
First, Cruz did disclose the loan on July 9, 2012; the runoff against then-Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst was on July 31. Now, the Cruz campaign did admit that there was a filing issue with the FEC, but to say this was undisclosed isnt accurate.
Moreover, this loan was reported in Roll Call on June 3, 2013:
SEE HERE:
In the first quarter of 2013, the Ted Cruz for Senate committee repaid Cruz the $298,000 maximum permitted on the loans. However, the committee is still carrying $545,000 on its books as a debt owed to Cruz. This includes $395,000 in loans for the primary and $150,000 in loans for the runoff election. Perhaps Cruz and his committee are hoping the law will change, or it will be struck down, or that his spouse may craft a new angle. Heidi Cruz is an investment banker and vice president with Goldman Sachs and previously worked at JPMorgan.
Cruz does list on his personal financial disclosure report as liabilities two loans received in 2012. One was a margin loan of $250,001 to $500,000 from Goldman Sachs. The other was a line of credit of $250,001 to $500,000 obtained from Citibank.
Kemberlee Kaye at Legal Insurrection also mentioned that this loan could be found on OpenSecrets.org:
SEE HERE:
http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2013/09/ted-cruz/
Additionally, in 2011, Cruz reported having borrowed between $100,000 and $250,000 from Goldman Sachs for a margin loan. In his 2012 report, the size of that loan had increased to between $250,000 and $500,000. In 2011, Cruzs total net worth was, on average, $1.7 million.
So, will Cruz have to explain a little more about this discrepancy that really reported a few years back? Yes. Could things have been filed differently to avoid confusion? Of course. Is this truly the bombshell that will derail his campaign? Hardly. Cruz disclosed the loan on his personal financials, but not his campaign forms. Again, these are mistakes that should not be entirely surprising. They happen some times.
You might want to call it a lie. I call it not even worth bothering over. It’s sloppy paper work, but theres nothing truly pernicious or clandestine here.

Ted Cruz Lies SIX Times in Under Four Minutes!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwIHJhtTSLg
Yes, I’ve see that YOUTUBE video and it has been posted here in FR. I don;t call them lies because they refer to Trump’s PAST ACTIONS and his PAST STATEMENTS. Trump of course can respond by showing videos ( as the youtube link you provided shows ) of what he said NOW or VERY RECENTLY when he started campaigning, but hey, I already pointed out that these are his RECENT REMARKS, while Ted Cruz refers to his PAST REMARKS. If you believe that Trump now means what he says, why don’t you give Ted Cruz the same benefit of the doubt? Yeah, double standard.
RE: But if you want to pretend Ted Bush is not a liar, go right ahead.
Well I never said Ted Cruz does not lie. I am saying that what you have presented thus far have very reasonable explanations and do not overcome his RECORD as Senator and Solicitor General.
RE: There are more but I dont feel like searching now.
You are more than welcome to search and present. I am not a Cruz supporter to the extent that I will defend him when he is wrong or when his “lies” ( note the quotes ) are show stoppers. But they must be blatant ones. The ones you present are not and explainable.
RE: The fact is that Cruz was for increasing H1B visas 500%, doubling legal immigration and taking in Syrian refugees until he changed those positions late last year because of the Trump effect.
Again (other than taking in Syrian refugees, which I am not certain he wants after what happened in France and Belgium), Ted Cruz was (past tense ) for increasing visas for skilled workers and is immigration friendly ( THE LEGAL KIND ).
To say however that his current stance is a convenience simply in order to counter Trump is to apply a DOUBLE STANDARD and ignore all the other convenient changes in positions Trump himself made ( that was the reason for Cruz’s statement about Trump in the above youtube link you provided ).
RE: Cruz was all for Obamatrade until he changed that position a couple of weeks ago.
Let’s not forget, On June 23, 2015, Cruz eventually voted against Trade Promotion Authority, also known as TPA or fast-track authority, which has been debated in Congress amid efforts by the Obama administration to secure the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal with 11 other nations. That was BEFORE Trump even announced his candidacy for President.
Cruz is a free trader and he made no secret of it when he debated Trump regarding his proposal to tax imports from China to the tune of 45%.
So, he was a supporter and voted in favor of TPA when it was first put to a vote in May. Only a month later, Cruz issued an op-ed denouncing the additions of Export-Import Bank reauthorization and immigration laws, and then voted in opposition.
The very same day as his no vote, Cruz published an op-ed to Breitbart explaining his decision. “TPA in this Congress has become enmeshed in corrupt Washington backroom dealings, along with serious concerns that it would open up the potential for sweeping changes in our laws that trade agreements do not typically include,” he said.
So, he initially voted to support TPA but eventually voted NO. It was a flip-flop but a flip-flop to the RIGHT side. Why can’t a person change his mind when he believes that his initial stance is wrong?
RE: Cruz has flip flopped a lot and more recently than Trump.
So nope, your argument that he flip flops more than Trump is not borne out by history. Try again.
RE: I am a little rusty with diagramming sentences, so if you have any more questions, please read it again.
The first impression I got ( and I could be wrong ) is your sentence seems to be implying that because Cruz and Ebbers shared something in common (Canadian birth), therefore, they also share more than that in common.
But then I could be wrong. That was just an impression.
The bottom line is, if we choose to by the stuff made here over the stuff made in other countries, then we make it profitable to make stuff here and take the profit out of shipping our jobs overseas.
That said, I won't fault anyone for refusing to buy cars built by the UAW, or products from companies that are pushing the homosexual agenda on us including forcing our young daughters to share the bathroom with grown men.
One thing I love about Verizon is that when I call for tech support, almost all the time the reps speak perfect English. If that changes, so might we.
“RE: But if you want to pretend Ted Bush is not a liar, go right ahead.”
No pretending necessary, Crus is a liar and has been lying for a long time. You can go ahead and explain away/ignore all the examples and pretend Ted Bush is honest if you want. More power to you.
RE: Crus is a liar and has been lying for a long time. You can go ahead and explain away/ignore all the examples and pretend Ted Bush is honest if you want. More power to you.
Well and good, ignore what Trump did but call Cruz a liar ( immitating Trump’s style ).
But then where are your examples? What you’ve presented thus far have explanations to them.
This is why Trump has a great opportunity to both educate the public and nail down the election, simply by doing what he does best, talk to the people.

I gave you examples but you can go on pretending Calgary Ted is honest if it makes you feel better about the liar. The truth is Ted Cruz did lie by omission when he did not tell people he was still an NBC Canadian in 2012. The (exempt) Cruz did lie about losing his health insurance earlier this year and had to walk it back. He did lie about those loans and still refuses to disclose the terms to the FEC. You don’t know anymore than I do what the actual terms are. All you know is what the less than honest Ted Cruz put out. I choose not to believe him. If there is nothing there, why doesn’t he disclose to the FEC as required? The author of this piece thinks it is because there is embarrassing information in those terms that will be released and Cruz is stalling until after the election, as many of his fellow uniparty hacks do in similar situations. I do not know about his loans and neither do you, but I do know Cruz lies a lot and think it is likely he is lying about them.

Cruz did lie about Trump’s positions on issues 6 times in under 4 minutes in one speech. I gave you a link to the video. Do what you want with it. Cruz has flip flopped on many important issues and has done so more recently than Trump. You can ignore and explain away all you want but the fact is that many people, including myself, think Cruz is obviously a compulsive liar. There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.
I am still waiting for Ford, Carrier and Nabisco to announce price cuts for their products made in Mexico. Still waiting....
PS: Try to find a marking where something is made. It is almost impossible. An example is the Red Rider BB gun. Made ins China but that box it comes in does not say that.
The Mexican made Fiesta is cheap, in more ways than one.
You'll have to wait until they get started making other stuff there, although you'll probably still be waiting afterwards.
Try to find a marking where something is made. It is almost impossible. An example is the Red Rider BB gun.
I haven't run into that. Most of the time, I can see where something is made, and they'll make a point of it when it's made in the USA.
