Earth could become hotter than thought, study warns (clouds influence not correctly accounted for)

Washington (AFP) - Global warming could make the planet far hotter than currently projected because today's scientific models do not correctly account for the influence of clouds, researchers said this week.

The study in the journal Science was led by researchers at Yale University and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

When climate scientists look ahead to how much the planet's surface temperature may warm up in response to a doubling of carbon dioxide -- a byproduct of fossil fuel burning -- they typically predict a rise of between 2.1 and 4.7 degrees Celsius (3.75 to 8.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

But these models overestimate the ability of clouds to reflect back sunlight, and counteract warming in Earth's atmosphere, researchers said.

"We found that the climate sensitivity increased from four degrees Celsius in the default model to five to 5.3 degrees Celsius in versions that were modified to bring liquid and ice amounts into closer agreement with observations," said lead author Ivy Tan, a researcher at Yale University.

The problem is most models assume there is more ice in clouds than there actually is.

Yeah. This liberal horse shit is just like that. Count me among the unimpressed of the heathens. They really do think we are stupid, stupid, stupid.

I keep coming back to what Reagan said:

"The problem with our opponents is not that they are ignorant... it's that they know so much which isn't so."

Nothing estimates. Their estimates have been wrong, and will continue to be so.

Steam is invisible - new one on me. “Visible clouds are made of spheres of condensed water” which is water vapor vapor means gas. Thus Clouds = water vapor.

No way! The science was settled years ago! Well, that’s what they said then, anyway.

You might take a look at Watts Up With That? Anthony Watts is very knowledgeable and informative on this question. The AGW left hates him with a passion.

So these jokers screwed up one of the most significant parts of any climate model and they expect us to believe them?

Academia today, and really in the past as well (Piltdown Man was defended for years after the hoax was exposed by academics who had built their reputations on it), can be absolutely dogmatic in the face of new data and ideas. Once a PhD publishes he will defend that turf to his or her last dying breath. So once they’ve accepted the grant and published getting them to admit error is akin to getting the Catholic Church to admit Copernicus was right back in the 17th century. Best just to ignore or laugh at them and move on.

Joni Mitchell had it right. Scientists really don’t know clouds. At all.

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s cloud illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all

You are absolutely correct, and this is a huge problem. To be honest, this aspect of academia is responsible in a very, very big way for the mess with currently have in government. Same institutions producing the same kinds of politicians - very often with the same degrees. It’s pathetic, and very damaging.

People have said politics is Hollywood for ‘ugly’ people. Don’t know or care about the physical appearance reference, but I would say that academics is a potential pathway to ‘stature’ for those who generally don’t have too many other options to distinguish themselves in this manner. I’ve seen it over, and over, and over again. For too many the allure of academics has little to do with advancing ‘true’ knowledge. It’s often about ‘presenting at the cool meeting’, getting invited to ‘cool’ places to speak, being thought of as somehow ‘smarter’ than others, and just generally attaining a level of stature. That’s why people overstate data, and sometimes manufacture data. You are spot on.

Correct. For anyone trying to jump off the “Global Climate Change” train, it is career suicide. Now, more than ever, “scientific consensus” in some areas means nothing other than a political idea was implanted, nurtured with money and intimidation, and took hold.

Remember, at one point there was a 100% scientific consensus that the earth was flat, the sun revolved around the earth, and that ours was the only galaxy,

So the settled science is not settled? What happened to the old models that have proven wrong these past 20 years? Was there no water vapor until just now? If the old models that didn’t include water vapor failed to heat the Earth? What makes them think that adding water vapor to the models will change reality now?

So they are saying “We are stupider than we thought.” So now we can trust them to have figured out all the positive and negative variables? I think not.

Why need a pot? According to these people the oceans will boil. You can just pluck em out and eat.

Me, I’m a landlocked Midwestern boy. Not big on the sea food. More for you I guess.

The earth will burn to a cinder in a hundred years if you don't stop your evil ways and worship at the alter of Big Science and his father, Bigger Government. Only your money and willing subservience will save you from the yearly swings of hot and cold temperatures of the Climate Change End Times.

Pony up, suckahs sinners!
