Explanation: Gaze across the frozen canyons of northern Pluto in this contrast enhanced color scene, imaged last July by the New Horizons spacecraft. Currently known as Lowell Regio, the region has been informally named for Percival Lowell, founder of the Lowell Observatory. Also famous for his speculation that there were canals on Mars, in 1906 Lowell started the search that ultimately led to Pluto's discovery. Pluto's North Pole itself is above and left of center in the the frame. The pale bluish floor of the broad canyon on the left is about 70 kilometers (45 miles) wide, running vertically toward the south. Higher elevations take on a yellowish hue. New Horizon's measurements have determined that in addition to nitrogen ice, methane ice is abundant across northern Pluto's Lowell Regio.

Jes' funnin' wi'cha'
Don’t lick this snow cone.
Pluto brings out the “ooooos” and “ahhhhhs” once again.
It’s prettier than I think most imagined it would be.
Every time I see it I think of that noted atheist Neil Tyson who demoted it to ‘dwarf planet’ status.
He is not my favorite astronomer.
That drywall could use another coat of paint. ;-)
Appears to be Brown in colour underneath that pale covering.
He’s definitely high on my you-know-what list.
My hope is that as more and more fabulous images are sent and processed, Pluto will regain it’s status as a planet. What a fascinating place it’s turned out to be.
Not a primary residence, mind you (for tax purposes, I'd probably establish a legal domicile on Ceres), but just a weekend retreat.
Of course, it would have to be on the side eternally facing Charon (for the view, you know).
Regards,
Who is Charles Astro ?
Good question, but it’s one I’m afraid I’m not able to answer. Couldn’t even find him on Google.
But whoever he is, he can’t be all bad since he’s obviously fascinated by Pluto. :-)
Any plans to rent your vacation home when you aren’t there? If so, please put me on your waiting list. :-)
Fond hope. We may harbor the thought that it has served as the DECONSTRUCTOR of the very concept.
Yes, I did go to his blog and it’s in my Faves now. I checked out a couple of entries and will look into it more tomorrow. Getting close to bed time.
He must not be getting many hits because I went several pages into Google searching for some sort of info on him and never even ran across his blog. A shame because it does look interesting.
However you ran across it, I’m glad you posted the link. Others here will probably hang on to it, too.
They managed to find a bigger douchebag than Carl Sagan.
I was never a fan of Carl Sagan. Finding a bigger jerk must
have taken a lot of time and energy.
As ever, thank you for the post and ping, Mr. Civilizations.
Thanks ToL for the kind remarks, and looks like it’s time for the next one (and then zzz’s).
