Has FreeRepublic Jumped The Shark With Trump?
2/14/16 | OV

Posted on 02/14/2016 9:47:13 PM PST by OneVike

I have been a member of FreeRepublic since February 1998, and in all my years I have ever seen so many Freepers support, and defend such a leftist candidate as Donald Trump. In the old days, any candidate that spouted the rhetoric coming out of his mouth would have been received with unanimous hatred from Freepers.

Mitt Romney was met with scorn when he claimed to have changed and was more conservative than his record showed. However, The Donald says the same thing and he is allowed to wear his liberal record as badge of honor, because he has been born again. Never mind that his fruit smells like Skubala. Any Republican candidate in the past who supported partial birth abortion was considered dead on arrival with 99.9% of Freepers. Yet a vast number of Freepers today look at Trump's defense of PP, and attack the candidate who dares to bring it up at a debate.

Thinking I have stumbled in some black hole of Bizzaro World, I decided to spend most the night, after the debate yesterday, researching past posts and comments of many Freepers who support Trump. I must admit that I wasn't too shocked to see that not all, but the vast majority, of his supporters have joined FR within the last 8 years. However I pretty much only searched the opinions of his most ardent supporters.

Interestingly enough, the ones I researched, all demanded that both Houses of Congress go after Planned Parenthood for selling baby parts. Many of them even demanded that the House use their power of the purse to defund PP. Yet these very same individuals defend, and make excuse for Trump's defense of said abortion factory, or at least claim it's bothersome but will still support him. These same individuals, however, were demanding McConnell resign for failing to pass legislation in the senate defunding PP. I did similar searches on their opinions of various other topics that Trump defends which would normally be cause of revulsion from these supporters had it been any other politician.

Well, I must admit that I am rather stunned by the way they have so easily changed their stances.

Who would have known that those who accused Jimmy Carter of never meeting a dictator and communist he didn't like, would now tout that his endorsement of Trump is not Trumps problem, and some even claim it will help him with Democrat voters in November. So we are now to welcome a politician that will get votes from leftists?

I thought the idea was to win them over to conservatism, not to abandon our beliefs just to get them to vote for our guy. So when will Freepers decide we need to change our stances on topics like "Black Lives Matter" to get more blacks to vote for our guy, or maybe we can find a good Muslim candidate who has made billions and talks a good game. Hey, so what if he may support Sharia law, just think of all those Muslim votes we can get from refugees Obama shipped in and we could actually own Dearborn Michigan. There has got to be some great female politicians who support PP that we could get behind, After all, we do have a problem with the female vote, right?

Yea, I'm just an old timer with old time values from the days when The Donald was still giving money to the Clintons and laughing at Republicans for making such a big deal over BJs in the Oval Office. Yup, just a geezer who remembers the wall of separation set up by Jamie Gorelick to keep Clinton from being prosecuted over Witewater which led to the attack on 9/11.

I guess I'm a conspiracy believer who thinks 9/11 was Clinton's fault, not GW's, and that the Weapons of Mass Destruction the NY Times finally admitted existed were originally sold to the public by the Clinton's to help get the Democrats on board for the war on Iraq.

Those were the good old days when we used to rip apart fake politicians for trying too hard to fit into our club, instead of ripping the messengers for noticing a fake when we see one.

Yea, that was before FreeRepublic jumped the Shark.

Beautiful and meaningful picture.

I was on such a horrible thread this morning that all joy went out of the world.

So I took a long walk with Smitty and then went to get him groomed. On the way, we saw a whale.

I feel all better now but I cannot get on any more FR threads today.

Insanity has taken over.

I don’t know what is going to happen to you because I don’t have the stomach to find out.

I just want to say that I agree with everything you said.

You may think you are alone but you are not.

I should stay and defend you but to protect my mental health I cannot deal with any more rabid Trump supporters today.

Keep the faith

I did not provide any links, save for the cut and paste quotes in one story, to the PP issue.

It seems that conservative outlets that not too long ago were sources for conservative views have been labeled as bastions of the GOPe. Not worthy of any deference nor any amount of consideration. Once any formerly well thought of conservative source takes Trump to task, it is labeled part of the vast GOPe conspiracy.

No one or group is spared. I have seen Limbaugh blasted, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams and others derided for even a pittance of "anti-Trump" thought or comment.

Trumpism is fast becoming a cult, where the figurehead is nearly revered, seemingly deified.

Don’t come to me and say Trump is the one man to make illegal immigration an issue! It is an insult to the effort put forward by Tom Tancredo who was far more better on the issue than any candidate we have today but none of you would rally to his cause. For all his faults, are people seriously neglecting Pat Buchanan year after year raised the issue?

I too supported those men...

You talk about the problem of government not enforcing the law, agree but you give the second group of businessmen like Trump a pass for using the cheap labor and like other billionaires they want their illegal workforce so they can have cheap lawn care among other things.

Trump like all businessmen is in it to make money...If the gov't allows it why wouldn't he take advantage of it???

And you cannnot blame it on the subcontractor when you’re the one hiring them.

The contractor hires the subcontractor...The sub contractor's crew is up to the subcontractor...

although welcoming if some of his statements I am convinced he’s not my candidate on that issue or abortion, homosexual marriage, protecting the second amendment, repealing Obamacare, reforming entitlements, or many other issues.

Trump says he will repeal Obamacare...Trump is as pro Second Amendment as any one you know...The only entitlement reform I care about is getting a significant raise in Social Security benefits...This is Trump's position on homo marriage which with everything else, you are consistently wrong...

Marriage : Trump has been a consistent opponent of marriage equality. He said that he opposed it because he was a “traditional” guy, choosing to support domestic partnership benefits instead. Trump later reversed himself and said he also opposed civil unions. Despite a brief flirtation with “evolving” in 2013, Trump has consistently maintained his opposition to marriage equality, sometimes by citing polling and making an analogy to his dislike of long golf putters. After the Supreme Court ruling, Trump said the court had made its decision and, although he disagreed with the ruling, he did not support a constitutional amendment that would allow states to re-ban marriage equality. He later said he would appoint Supreme Court judges who would be committed to overturning the ruling.

And like Ronald Reagan, Trump has flip flopped on abortion...

Donald Trump shocked attendees at the conservative CPAC conference in February when he declared himself pro-life after years of supporting the pro-abortion position. Several months ago, when questioned about his position, Trump responded by saying the public "would be surprised" by his stance and, in an interview with Laura Ingraham from Fox News leading up to the conference, Trump characterized himself as "pro-life" and he repeated that apparent reversal when he told the audience at CPAC, "I am pro-life" and pledged to fight for the reversal of ObamaCare, which contains abortion funding loopholes.

And now that you have misrepresented Trump again, I am curious what other of his positions you don't like...Bringing jobs back to America??? You don't like Trump stopping muzlim terrorists from entering our country???

In the beginning I wholehearted was a Cruz fan...But as time goes on, things just don't add up...At the same time when I first heard that Trump was going to run for the position, I said to myself, 'what a joke'...

I was wrong twice in a row...

What you quoted was accurate though.

Personally, that issue, and the split decision second-thought on Trumps' part is not my hill to die on, or one I'd insist that Trump should be crucified upon himself, although under that same hummock are so many bones, it is painful to contemplate.

I heard him say that Common Core was bad and then within just a few minutes say that he was going to keep Common Core.

Instead of getting after me why don't you vet your own candidate?

This period of time is when we are supposed to be looking carefully at the candidate's characters.

I have looked at all of the candidates. I originally did not have a problem with Trump. I thought he was a bit bombastic, but I figured that might not be too bad. Maybe we need someone like that. I liked the way he put the GOPe in their place. But then he began attacking everybody, not on substance, not on other candidates ideas or actions. He instead went after Carly's face, Megyn's eyes, comparing Ben Carson to a pedophile, Bush's short wife, Ted is nasty and a liar.

Do you ever notice that he never articulates anything about our most precious document, the Constitution? Why is that?

The answer is he does not care about such things. And there is no way he could take a crash course in it.

I find Donald Trump untrustworthy and if he is the nominee I will leave that oval blank.

Bee burned by a few fake conservatives in my life, which is why I refuse to accept Trump is anything but. He will destroy the conservative movement for many years by dividing it this way.

Yes, I fear the dumbing down has so infectedthe country that we will be stuck with Obamacare for life and with Scalia’s death the Islamic invasion will overrun us.

If Trump, or Hillary, or Sanders gets in, I will never bother voting again and just take care of mine since this country will be screwed.

This was to be our last chance we had, and Trump has found the formula to use the conservatives to drive the final nail in it.

Just me, but I hold Rush and Hannity partly responsible. He says he stays neutral, but this is one time we needed him to pick sides in the primary.

My book also. There is nothing admirable nor defensible about defending PP.

A Theocracy, under any name, Iran being the most prominent current, is exactly what the founders wanted to avoid.

Of course some were more hostile to the idea than others, Adams for example. But let there be no mistake, Jefferson and many of the founders were Free Masons first and foremost, the square of such was fundamental to their beliefs, and even much of our government structure was based upon those tenets.

Central to that system is the belief in God. To be more specific, in Free Masonry that would be the God of Abraham, nothing more, nothing less, but let us be realistic, especially in dealing with Jeffersons views, he would not have wanted influence from the other path of the God of Abraham, which was from the Mohammed, and he had not only the historical relevance of dealing with that group (the studied and written history of Masonry going back to the Crusades, Knights Templars etc.), but also a pragmatic personal perspective that came from dealing with the Barbaries.

Again, one can take any individual founder figure, and read their writings. The Federalist Papers read like a soap opera, with each individual have a strong belief, many times diametrically opposed to others.

Ben Franklin was much more pragmatic, and was NOT held in high regard by many of the Christian churches in the area because of his belief that the Church held no sway over government, he was not inclined to submit to the idea that a priest or pastor or whatever hold power in our government, but indeed those people come to the table of the government with all of their wisdom, BUT while at the table of government, they were representative of ALL of their people, not just those of their congregation. In other words, the were public servants while in court, and happily, priest or pastor on their own time.

One of Franklin’s famous quotes which was printed in his Almanac was “Lighthouses have more value than Church’s”. This did nothing to endear him to the hearts of the clergy.

Then we have Adams who was full swing against any sort of religious influence, but even though he thought he was quite clever, one cannot merely make rules for a better life out of thin air, without asking why those rules are in place. They are there because of the Ten Commandments, or perhaps as he argued, it was human nature to be lawful. Most people digress that notion.

In Madison’s writings of the 1820’s (which were considered to be summaries of his early thoughts), he expounded: “And I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in shewing that religion & Govt will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together.” and “Every new and successful example of a perfect separation between ecclesiastical and civil matters is of importance.”

But in all, the founders were in agreement that ALL would have a seat at the table, the deist and the pious, and all would have an equal voice.

The main idea in all though, was that after both a bloody revolution with the King of England and the Church of England (both ruled by the same), our nation would not be allowed to follow the same path.

Cruz had big money donors when he ran for the Senate. He made some tall promises when he ran, and he has kept EVERY one of them. I have no doubt that if he says that he will do something, he will give it his all without licking his finger and sticking it up to see which way the wind is blowing.
