It’s Because He’s Black, Isn’t It?
Taki's Magazine ^ | February 1, 2016 | Jim Goad

Superstar NFL quarterback Cam Newton is black, and even though many people loudly insist that shouldn’t matter, it is precisely those people who are always making a preposterously huge deal of it.

Chief among these offenders is Mr. Newton himself, who last Wednesday told reporters at a press conference that the reason he sometimes faces criticism is not because he’s a high-profile sports star and all of them sometimes face criticism—no, it is clearly his status as a Negroidal American that inspires the negative comments:

I’m an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to.

In truth, I’ve seen thousands of people I can compare him to—namely, African Americans who deflect any possible criticism by blaming it on racism. I’ve seen this for two generations and counting.

The following day, ESPN Radio host Bomani Jones—a black man who approaches black issues from a black perspective in the blackest way he knows—said that Cam Newton makes many white Americans uncomfortable because he is not a shuffling and compliant goody-two-shoes black man but rather an unapologetically “blackety-black” man. Jones opined that there has been a “historical lineage that indicates a lot has been done to keep black people from playing quarterback” and that the “simple reality” is that our wicked nation “does not like black people very much.”

USA Today published an article on Newton’s blackety-blackness that featured a quote by Doug Williams, the former Washington Redskins quarterback who in 1988 became the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Williams constructs a self-contained logical Guilt Loop wherein anyone who dares to criticize Newton is in denial of their racist motivations:

Tiger Woods is Black and also ended up failing as a role model.

At first he seemed pretty good, then he became too cocky. Then he left Fuzzy Zoeller twist in the wind, then he slept around and refused to stop even when married with children.

Now he has been eclipsed in a sport he was dominant, so badly he’s just an after thought now. This all not to mention his probable use of steroids.

Strange play wasn’t it?
99% of the time you see those guys with a banzai dive at the ball. Totally instinctive.

a very superficial and ill thought out statement.

Many teams would happy to have a young Doug Williams at QB.

The issue with Newton is one of being a prima donna mostly. Same as Manzell and lots of others.

Cam is black?! /s

I as a Carolinian love the Panthers and have insisted that his antics were part of his enjoying the game and meant like Seattle’s12 th man. I love the excitement. But after his childish behavior yesterday, black, white or whatever he needs to grow up. He is an excellent player who has gotten too arrogant and forgotten that pride does come before the fall and blaming race just isn’t the adult way to handle it. If a player sheds a few tears at a loss we can feel compassion, but this is going to make it difficult for adults to see Cam in a serious manner. Actions matter.

Yes, it’s because he’s black. That’s why I don’t watch football, basketball, and baseball anymore. Curling. That’s the ticket. That delicate twist of the wrist to get just the right spin is one of the supreme skills in all of athletics, and ONLY white people can do it.

It generally doesn’t turn out well when a team goes with a black quarterback.

Doug Williams, Warren Moon and Russell Wilson have been great. Steve McNair was very good. Donovan McNabb and Vince Evans were decent. James Haris' career was short, but he showed flashed of brilliance. They aren't all Michael Vick.

That’s part of our Privilege. Don’t forget the broomwork. Wouldn’t be curling without the White Broomwork.

Cam Newton is proving the mostly deserved stereotype of the black quarterback

Can run

Is arrogant

Showboats and Xhosa dances like a champ

Petulant

Immature

Can’t Marshall the team in a crunch

Best black QB ever was the first

Warren Moon

I don’t recall him whining

They push and seek black QBs like crazy but so far....

However

The half white QB at Texas Tech....

Mahonnes

Keep your eye on him

What killed whites in football is mommies and soccer as much as talent disparity

Whites just don’t play as much anymore

Gee...what were McNabb’s physical characteristics comparative to Cam?

Did McNabb ever say that he was “a big black man that scared everyone”? He and Cam are pretty much equal...but Rush had soooooooo much to say about McNabb.

ESPN Radio host Bomani Jones............... the "simple reality is that our wicked nation does not like black people very much."

Flights leave for Africa daily. Please take one at your earliest convenience.

I am sure you can find a home where you do not see a white person all day.

It ain’t just Cam...there are several wide-outs that simply step out instead of getting hit.

Contrast him with Kennan Reynolds, Navy’s QB. He will probably never be able to go pro because he will be serving his country, but he isn’t complaining.

What scares me is naming your child Chosen.

If my last name was One, I think I'd name him that. Or maybe I'd go with that as his middle name - with his first name "The".
He could star in all the Kung Fu movies.

Agree on that.
But seems much different than jumping on a “live” ball.
That just seems to be baked into the football instinct.

Every winning and losing Super Bowl quarterback is interviewed after the game. QBs are traditionally team captains, and that comes with some extra team responsibilities.

Every one that doesn’t handle themselves in the post game interviews are panned, regardless of race.

Cam needs to grow up and take responsibility. Victims don’t play in Superbowls...
