7.1 earthquake in Alaska
An American in Turkiye

Posted on 01/24/2016 2:55:40 AM PST by An American in Turkiye

Just had a 7.1 earthquake hit 176 miles south of Anchorage. Yikes. Wife and I thought the house was going to collapse. Any Alaskan Freepers care to weigh in?

Anything over a 5.0 is absolutely scary to me. Stay safe!

Ummm... a full moon in one place on Earth is full on all the other places on Earth at the same time.

7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Alaska

By Joshua Berlinger, CNN

Updated 6:56 AM ET,
Sun January 24, 2016

(CNN)A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake’s epicenter hit near Cook Inlet, 162 miles southwest of Anchorage. It was about 50 miles deep.

Joshua Veldstra, a professional photographer who lives in Homer, said the earthquake lasted about 30 seconds.

“When it hit, it was just soft at first, and it just kept getting bigger,” Veldstra said. “It was one of those moments where you didn’t’ know if it was going to get worse or if it was going to calm down.”

Anchorage police tweeted that there were no reports of major damage or injury following the earthquake.

The USGS reported that there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage, but the agency’s “Did You Feel It?” map shows strong shaking could be felt near Anchorage.

The National Weather Service said there was no tsunami threat from the quake because of how deep it struck.

Two smaller earthquakes — a 4.0 and a 3.2 — struck within 30 minutes after the first one.

Allah is punishing Wasilla, because Sara Palin endorsed Donald Trump.

Never woke up here in Fairbanks; must not been too bad. We had a 7.9 Nov 3rd 2002 and that was a good one. I didn’t even feel this shaker last night.

Like that here in Anchorage. It just kept going and going and going. Some things fell off shelves, a clock fell off the wall, and a few drawers opened, but no damage inside that I could find. Will check outside after the sun comes up later, but expect none.

The difference between a 7.1 and a 7.9 is with the bigger shaker chests of drawers, tvs, china closets, tables are all flipped over & upside down; 3 foot of everything all over the floor. Woodstoves slide 15 feet across the floor. Houses slide off their foundations and you have 5 foot deep trenches in front yard; slides sideways. Then of course you have more shakers every half hour for at least a month. IF they had a 7.9 in Anchorage, it would be total destruction.

If you check out my link for the other FR post on this earthquake, at comment #34 I describe my experience with a 7.5 earthquake in Mexico City.

I hear you! This one was quite enough, especially with my Mom in a wheelchair. We have stair lifts to get her to the downstairs wheelchair, but it wouldn’t be fun getting her outside.
