Winter storm Jonas is brewing on the East Coast and is projected to start dumping snow and freezing rain on Friday night. So you should run to the store and buy bread and milk, right? Wrong. Bread and milk expire pretty quickly and require refrigeration. They're also pretty light on the nutrients and won't keep you satiated and supplemented as you ride out the weather. The trick is to buy foods that don't won't expire quickly or need to be refrigerated. They should be easy to prepare, easy to eat, high in protein, and provide enough variety to keep you full and happy for days. Here are 13 better items for your grocery-store run.

I try to keep a few Mountain House meals on hand just for a few days.

I also keep a few pounds of rice and a few bags of beef jerky to flavor the rice. Also some hot sauce tho I use only a tiny amount.

The Mountain House meals are very good.

That’s right. Besides, everyone should have a lot more than two or three days food on hand at all times.

Sometimes city people amaze me. I can’t wait to see the sheer joy of a collapse with ‘educated’ people like this making up the population.

That’s right. The scariest part of a bad situation is the people.

If you’re able to cook with Propane or Butane, then you have LOTS MORE OPTIONS and even the ability to heat part of your dwelling, should power go out. You could literally last for weeks.

But then this is the Northeast, so if the government does supply you with the means for the above, and the hardware and fuel needed, why on earth would you bother?

They’re DOOMED.

Don’t forget an old fashioned hurricane lamp...oil lamp. Our parents and grandparents didn’t always have electricity. I’ve been through hurricanes with just an oil lamp and a bottle of coal oil. No need for batteries.A camping stove and bottle of gas.

Most of them cannot make fire without matches or a lighter.

Most of them do not know first aid.

Most don’t know how to hunt or fish, much less what plants locally are edible.

Most of them wouldn’t know to hollow out a snowbank to sleep in if outside.

Most of them are gonna die quickly.

Those suggestions are not much different, except for shoveling snow, than the ones we get on the coast before a hurricane. No electricity, non perishable food, batteries etc.

It didn’t used to be like that, but it is now.

I was raised in the Adirondacks and we lost power often. For days in ice storms. But we were raised outdoors so it wasn’t a big deal. We had the ability and knowledge. Today all of that is gone.

Yep, it’s scary.

It wouldn’t be so bad if liberals and other stupid people’s actions or inactions affected them only.

I live in a rural area and always have those ‘necessities’ well stocked anyways.
The only things I bought specifically for this blizzard were sweets, and some lettuce and tomatoes.
