Winter storm Jonas is brewing on the East Coast and is projected to start dumping snow and freezing rain on Friday night. So you should run to the store and buy bread and milk, right? Wrong. Bread and milk expire pretty quickly and require refrigeration. They're also pretty light on the nutrients and won't keep you satiated and supplemented as you ride out the weather. The trick is to buy foods that don't won't expire quickly or need to be refrigerated. Oh Gawd, how I love pinon. I’ll never forget being rolled up in my Indian blanket beside a fire, staring at the stars. My children were asleep in the tent and I had gathered the pinon pine for the campfire. Could have reached up and picked the stars out of heaven they were so close. It was at Betatakin, I think, in Navajo country. Many many years later, i had driven down to Madrid, Spain to visit some friends. when I got out of the car all I could smell was pinon pine and sure enough that’s what it was all along the ridge. Brought back memories. Once in a while, I will see pinon incense and will buy a stick or two, just for old times...

I have a little adobe horno (oven) incense burner. Little Pinon incense cones fit right in and the smoke comes out the vent on the side at the top.
Suckling pigs are very tasty when cooked in a horno.

I do love avos and know how to choose them. They grow locally here. But I don’t consider them a prepper or emergency item. I don’t want to live without them, though!
I made a roasted chicken last night. Once I carved out the meat, the carcass went directly into the crockpot with mineral water and a dash or two of cider vinegar to get the most out of the bones. Being very sensitive to msg I do have to make all my own broths and soups. But it’s worth it to hav the whole house smell like delicious chicken broth for two days.
That's why you go get them right before a snow storm so you don't have to go to the store for a few days. It's a snow storm not a hurricane. And FWIW avocados go bad faster than bread or milk.
Forget the loaf of bread. Use WASA crispy bread. I love the rye whole grain type and always keep a few packages in my food storage. Since they have expiration dates, I eat them regularly and replace them. Great with soup or peanut butter or cheese, whatever.

We have friends that live in DC - in a very “upscale” area. They lost power during Snowmageddon and put their freezer stuff out on the balcony of their 2nd floor condo. It was swiped within an hour.
Yeah, me too - Been a hunter, a trapper, a fisherman, cowboy, and farmer my whole life, among many other hats... You just DO. and do for yourself. It's how you get along. You can't afford to be picky (not money as much as circumstance), and if you are, you won't be long.
If I have my go-bag and my belt (pistol, knife, tommy +possibles), I can live in the sticks pretty indefinitely (though gimped up now, so haven't for a time). I can knapp stone, tan hide, make rope, fix anything... build anything...
Most city folk don't understand, and it ain't something you can explain to them. I just feel sorry for them. I sure couldn't live that way. Not for me.

Yep! They are great for fishing, too! And you’d be pleasantly surprised how far they mark them down once fishing season here fades into hunting season here in the Allegheny foothills.
Omigosh, y’all are SNOWED! Igloo has a big sale in October, but it’s pretty much always fishing season in South Texas.
(Snowed, but what a beautiful place to be, though.)
Right now, I would trade it for South Texas and sunshine in a heartbeat.
