DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Even a jackpot isn't enough to buy anonymity for many lottery winners, whose names are often made public by state law.
But now it's becoming increasingly possible for big winners to hide their identity, and lottery executives are trying to strike a balance between ensuring privacy and safety while still proving to the public that real people can win.
Jackpot winners "get a big old target painted on their backs," said Andrew Stoltmann, an Illinois attorney who has represented winners. When their names are released "they get harassed and harangued into some horrifically bad investments."

I don’t play the lottery, but if I did, I would want to know where my wager went to.
Why? State lotteries are more honest than Indian casinos. Only the age, gender, and county of the winner should be released.
YES - no argument necessary.
I’ll go with age, gender and county.
If I won, I’d be concerned about those I knew...not to mention those I don’t know.
AND on a previous thread the kidnapping for ransom threat was mentioned. That never even crossed my mind but it could be a real issue.
Hmmmm....then how is it that you can verify this..?
That data is nearly useless..
Well then you could afford to hire security...
I followed some links to what has happened to some of the lottery winners. Several kidnappings in there. “Befriended” by people, embezzelded and killed, long-term cynide poisoning, drug o.d. and booze, etc.
Boy - I’m glad none of my tickets won!
The kidnapping thing could be real bad - but I don’t know. I’m guessing it is more the stupidity of the victims hanging out with the wrong kinds of people. There are lots of multi-millonaires in the country - why aren’t there kidnappings of their kids? I suppose maybe it is the kidnappers that are stupid.

“I donât play the lottery, but if I did, I would want to know where my wager went to.”
Hey - I wonder if this guy will reimburse me for say half of my wager? “So you see - I invested in your winnings allowing you to get all that money. How about you just send me half of my investment back?”
That $10 would come in handy!
Who in the heck wants to live like that?
Ask the Winner
I have a friend here in Fairview that says “Don’t win the lottery, they’ll kidnap your kids.”
On the otherhand, how do we know the lottery officials are not awarding the prize to themselves.
Chinese lottery winners show up in full costumes with their faces and sex hidden - cats, dogs, bunnies - and people speculate that the lottery owners are secretly keeping the money for themselves.

One guy got buried in the cement.I think it was like the day he won or something like that. I don’t think they ever proved who did it.
Oops got the story totally wrong..except the cement thing

Rich people seem not to mind much...gated community and all that..
Actually, I was kind of glad that my ticket didn’t win. I don’t normally play, but it was huge fun planning on what I would do with the money. Cheap entertainment.
I got all of my family and co-workers out of debt and set up a great charity foundation. But the repercussions could be deadly.
Maybe I’ll just play for a smaller jackpot that would be low key and secure my future. I could always do the same things...just on a smaller scale. Besides...balancing a bank statement would be a b1tch. :)
