I am wondering if any FReepers had unexpected results when they did a DNA test during a family History search.
In my case I was looking for an oppressed history of serfdom and general nastiness from Norman Overlords during the Middle Ages, just preparing for an Obama America.
To my surprise I discovered we were Normans, in the Staple, Merchants, and in general capitalists, until God and Religion brought us unto this Blessed Shore to continue in the same trades.
So in this election year of the usual Freeper cage fights I thought to step outside the blood and gore of FReeper politics and speak of Family History.
Now they are all on my PC which has suffered a soft or hard crash and can't lift the tower any more to get it somewhere to rescue those files.
I do have an older GEDCOM but I had added a lot more and need to rescue them. The computer people I trusted and were close left. If it is still possible, I would like to buy a device that will slave that hd to my present computer.
Anyway, I am very honored to make your acquaintance. What is your line? I used to help Arthur Osgood in FL with any good Osgood information I found even though not my line. Arthur, was the one who told me about the Osgood book and helped me but have been out of touch with him for years.
My family all served in the South Pacific.
I’m a serious amateur genealogist & had both the Ancestry & 23 and Me tests done, along with a few smaller, lesser known companies.
Yes, we did confirm a lot of the lines I’ve worked on forever, like my mom’s New England & dad’s Irish roots. No real shockers there.
However, we did have a few surprises and a confirmation of a suspected lineage. On my mom’s side we have a small amount of Spanish/Portuguese/Italian ancestry, and on my dad’s side, we have a small amount of African/Russian/Finnish ancestry. We were utterly shocked about the Spanish bit from my mom. We were not expecting that. Mom’s side always thought they were completely Anglo-Saxon-Celtic.
The African side from my dad wasn’t a shock; we had suspected it for years but had to wait until some relatives died off to prove it. Sadly, none of the black people that I have the African link with want to make contact. It’s also from an illegitimate connection, so there’s a lot of questions from the non-black relatives from that side too. As you can tell, I’m not too popular with most of the folks from that branch!!
The DNA testing is amazing, and I strongly recommend it to all, even with the small chance you might find something ‘shocking’. As a genealogist, that stuff is the most fun to find!
I've never done a dna test. I'm no particular fan of ancestry but did do a lot of research there. I got proficient in getting the most out of their search engine. Then they revamped the whole site, and I had too much difficulty finding anything, including the Gary Boyd Roberts books. He has a couple videos on youtube.
Ah, Bill, maybe we’re related! I’m a Jones by birth. Jones, Davis...plenty of Welsh background on my dad’s side. Indeed I am Not Guilty. ;)
My great uncle brought back a war bride from England, but she wound up committing suicide via skill saw. He was a pulp SciFi writer, Neil R. Jones. Well guess I just blew my cover, heh.
Kind of what I thought. I assume that people made inferences based on name and lication
That's not something you read everyday.
Oh I have and DNA does not tell me about jobs or trades. It can tell me locations and bloodlines.
They family stories tell the every day life.
Do not confuse the two
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it.
I'm both English and Irish, so I sent myself a reparations check for the Potato Famine.
If I remember correctly you and Zeta Jones are not twins. Equally not guilty but of different shades of pale. Stay out of the GA sun.
I was adopted and did mine last year...I found out I’m an eastern European mutt.
Traced ours back to a castle in Ireland that was awarded to my great, great, great, great, great grandfather. He was one of several boys of a “Viking noble,” and was awarded the castle and lands after a battle in Ireland. He eventually chose to leave to come to the New World in the early 1700’s.
So on my mother’s side I first discovered the Bentley’s of Essex England and trace their arrival here to before the Revolutionary War. All fought against England and the crown and one Father with both his sons are recognized in the historical service records.(Bentley).
The Viking lineage comes through my mother’s mom’s side under the Fannin name.
My Dad’s side is a bit less glamorous. Simple planter’s finding their way here in the late 1800’s and helping to build and settle the area around Cleveland, Ohio.
I can’t wait to see. I do know that the one time I was TDY in Germany the civilians would walk up to me speaking German as if they thought I was a native.
Are you me??? Because according to my back of the envelope genealogy, I am also descended from Lady Godiva (on my father’s side) and from 3 Mayflower relatives (on my mother’s side).
The Vikings entered Ireland by longboat in the 9th century at a small coastal town called Annagassan, between Dublin to the south and Drogheda to the north. Annagassan holds a Viking Festival every once in awhile. The town's ancient name is Linn Duachaill.
Supposedly, any of the Irish names starting with "Du" or "Dub" are Viking in origin, like Dublin, a Viking settlement.
Wow...know any one from the Bentley line?
