Texas Grocery Magnate Forbids ‘Open Carry,’ Opposes School Choice, Supports Sanctuary Cities
Brietbart Texas ^ | 3 Jan 2016 | Merrill Hope

Charles Butt, the Texas billionaire magnate behind the H-E-B supermarket chain which forbid the open carry of firearms law that went into effect January 1, 2016, opposes school choice, funds anti-school choice lobbyists, and is even credited for his role in killing a 2011 state bill banning “sanctuary cities.”

Butt is the 2015 fourth richest Texan and Forbes’ 44th wealthiest person in America with a net worth of $10.7 billion known for funneling hard earned assets into educational lobby groups that fight school choice, although the 77-year-old grocer received a private Ivy League college education that included an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious Wharton School and a master’s in business administration from Harvard. Texas Watchdog stated Butt believes that private competition “undermines government schools.”

HEB started in Corpus Christi many years ago. HEB stands for Howard Edward Butt. Charles daddy. They lived on Ocean Drive in Corpus. 20 + years ago they moved their headquarters to San Antonio. I will never step foot in the store(s) again.

Time to boycott HEB.

I've heard for years that the owner of the HEB chain was a hardened libtard. This report proves it beyond a shadow of doubt.

You *are* very spoiled, dp0. Right on the ocean, the most vibrant city in the US right at your feet. Anyplace else would probably feel like BFE.

47. I know that’s young but I Enjoyed NYC plenty.

worked in the Twins, Rockefeller Plaza (saw the tree every day for ten years).

the WTC was always awesome to me. Never got old being at its doorstep looking up.

used to love to walk after work at 3am all the way to the ferry from Rock Plaza. A few people, the police and the cabs.

But this middle aged man wants some peace. PA is looking good.

That is young. Younger than ya think, at the time, & sometimes, younger than ya feel.

Pennsylvania certainly has some pretty woods. AND it’s not so far away when y’all get homesick.

Peace is very, very good. I think that’s what most of us are wishing for now, especially after all the nonsense we’ve been through the last 20 or so years. Sooo sick of the crazy.

Well, truth is, they probably aren’t any more “liberal” than any of the others...but I do think they should think hard about the open-carry issue, especially given that they are native Texans.

Our store has given us instructions to not interfere with anyone who comes in with a holster unless they cause a ruckus. We, though, aren’t allowed open or concealed carry. Their property, their rules. :)

I agree with the first paragraph. I think they should reconsider their decision.

But as you say in the second paragraph, 'Their property, their rules.'

Miss WinCo from when I lived in the Pacific NW. Great prices and very good quality. They sell so much volume, produce and meat are always fresh.

I have no choice as HEB is the only store in town. I’ve been cussing them for 20+ years because their shelves are half empty, they never have what’s advertised, they don’t accept coupons and their produce is old and nasty. Yeah, it’s probably just at this store but they’re the only game in town and headquarters knows they can dump old produce and bent cans on us. They are living up to their name - B U T T.

No, that was an old joke back when I was a kid. The joke was that HEB was going to buy Piggly Wiggly and name it Wiggly Butt.

Two men are single-handedly blocking school choice in Texas, and propping up a faltering public monopoly.

House Speaker Joe Straus and H-E-B grocery magnate Charles Butt wield political and financial clout over the state Legislature to ensure the status-quo in education.

“Straus and Butt use a broad brush to keep choice at bay, calling everything a voucher or privatization,” says Matthew Prewett, founder of Texas Parents Union.

On cue, a Butt-sponsored political group, Texas Parent PAC, declared, “We do not support candidates who advocate for privatization of public schools.”

Texas Parent PAC and two other Butt-backed organizations — Raise Your Hand Texas and Save Texas Schools — are crucial weapons in the rearguard fight against school choice. The three groups endorse and fund candidates willing to restrict parental rights.

Straus, a San Antonio Republican who depends on union-friendly Democrats to hold onto his job as House speaker, received $168,000 in campaign contributions from Butt.

Butt also bankrolled Parent PAC with $1,498,000.
