Trump is so scared of losing Iowa to Cruz, he’s wetting his pants
Red State ^ | 1/3/2015 | Neil Stevens

Donald Trump was on Face the Nation, and had an epic tantrum. Right now he's so scared of losing to Ted Cruz, he's having to lash out in ridiculous ways. It's interesting seeing what Trump looks like when he's behind, he knows he's behind, and he's wetting-his-pants scared of being the big, fat loser.

Here's the key transcript:

DICKERSON: When you say about Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100%, "Not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba," what does that mean?

TRUMP: Well, it just means that Cuba generally speaking is a Catholic country. And you don't equate evangelicals with Cuba. I don't. I mean, I think of evangelicals, and i have, I guess I am. You know, I'm Presbyterian. I'm Protestant. But I don't see it coming out of Cuba.

DICKERSON: But you're not questioning whether - I mean, as far as you know, he could be more devout than you are.

TRUMP: It's possible. Certainly it's possible. I'm not questioning it. And I say it in a somewhat smiling manner. But there's a little truth to it.

What strikes me first about this is that Trump feels the need to attack Ted Cruz's Christianity as fake. Trump wants you to think that Cruz is a secret Catholic, only pretending to be a Baptist (SBC) in order to get votes in Iowa.

Does anyone actually believe this? If you've ever heard Ted Cruz speak in your life, you know that he's been going to and paying attention in church. His style of speaking is the tell. He gets in your face, he lectures you. He wants you to get right with government. He could sprinkle his speeches with "Can I get an amen?" and it would sound natural. You can't look into his heart and know what he truly believes, but it's obvious he's been going to church and paying attention to his pastors.

But next, it's obvious Trump is pretty out of touch with what's going on in Presbyterianism in America. He's so hot to try to tar Cruz as a secret Catholic, but when given the chance, he's not taking a stand in the great conflict right now in American Presbyterianism. Let me explain.

The biggest Presbyterian Church in our country is the Presbyterian Church (USA). PCUSA currently has about 1.7 million members. That's been dropping for decades, but it started dropping faster in 2012, after the 2011 ratification of Amendment 10-A to the Book of Order, which would allow ordination of non-chaste homosexuals.

The large drop represents entire local churches abandoning PCUSA in favor of the Presbyterian Church in America. PCA takes a much more traditional view on most social issues, and has grown to have about 350,000 members. PCA and PCUSA have had to go to court over the ownership of church buildings and property, of the local congregations who flipped from PCUSA to PCA.

For Trump to speak of himself being Presbyterian, without mentioning which kind of Presbyterian he is, tells me one thing: Trump likely attends church at a PCUSA congregation, which would mean he stuck with the group that permits abortion (it is deemed morally acceptable), homosexual priests, homosexual 'blessings' as pseudo-marriages, and free divorce.

Donald Trump is throwing stones, but the evidence suggests he's got a glass house on this issue. Not a smart tactic, and a mark of scared desperation on his part.

What would have happened if Hillary didn’t get her potty break.

That's another disgusting one...When Trump said it was disgusting he wasn't referring to Hillary's bathroom break like many are pretending, he was responding to the remark from someone out in the audience...But the Trump haters are all over it...

I don’t think it has to do with Ted, but has something to do with Ted’s father. I think that is who Trump is referring to, very deftly. Trump knows Cruz is not from Cuba. Remember he says something that either riles everyone up or makes people say “Huh?”, but then it sets in. I’m not saying it’s valid, but for what it’s worth, I think that’s what it is. It will probably unfold fairly soon, or by the recent discussion here on dominionism, it may already have.

I was pretty appalled by his attack on Cruz, frankly. It had nothing to do with politics or any political positions, but was just a nasty personal attack with a pitch to people that Trump is trying to court (Evangelicals).

I am a Baptist as well...I didn't see any personal attack...

Bob Dole and W won Iowa on their way to the nomination. Romney damn near did (was actually the announced winner on election night) without even trying.

Part of what has plagued the pundits, media and many of the GOPe candidates this go around is the “default position” of doing things the same or looking back on campaigns in the past. I don’t think Dole, W or even Romney’s “almost win” in Iowa really has any bearing on this cycle. It’s a whole different type of race and the times are very different. Dole ran in’96...in the fast paced world of politics today, that is eons ago. Heck, this is a radically different country than it was before B.O. was elected, and that wasn’t even 8 years ago.

Could be he meant to say something else and it didn’t come out right so he quit saying it...

That’s what I think too.

I’m more of a Cruz supporter, but I certainly agree with the sentiment

Agreed, but I think with Trump as VP is the way to a Cruz Presidency as well.

Ah, yes, the old “this time it’s DIFFERENT!” argument. I heard it from the Newt people in ‘12, and the Thompson people in ‘08. Libs tried it with Dean, and are trying it now with Bernie. In the end, though, there’s a reason why contemporary wisdom is given credence - because, more often than not, it’s pretty spot on.

In other words, what’s past is prologue (in the words of every Shakespeare fan/NFL GM). Even Obama’s supposed “groundbreaking” campaign in ‘08 was a modernized and improved version of Carter in ‘76.

Look, I’m not a Trump fan, but I’m not really a Cruz guy, either, so I don’t have much of a dog here. But I know this - especially after his recent announcement vis a vis Iowa spending, a Trump loss in Iowa will put him in a deep, deep hole. An establishment guy can lose Iowa and bounce back. An upstart is screwed.

Your posting history says otherwise. You’re not only a liar, you’re a rather stupid one.

Trump - whose religious practice was nonexistent until he started to run for president - assumes that Evangelicals hate Catholics, so he was implying that Cruz is, because of his Hispanic background, not a “real” Evangelical.

Evangelicals, or at least most of my Baptist friends (I’m Catholic), don’t hate Catholics, but this was clearly an attempt by Trump to suggest that Cruz is a crypto-Catholic and therefore should be hated by Evangelicals.

The author of this RedState article, Neil Stevens, is a lying schmuck.   He is the guy who recently lied about Trump's comments on Israel and Jews.   (One quick source for that:   "Neil Stevens From 'Red State' Blog Completely Fabricates Donald Trump Statements Re. ISRAEL".   Article includes link for youtube video of the Trump speech to Jewish group that was referenced by Stevens in his lies.)

Looking at a photo of this Neil Stevens, I am not at all surprised with his dwelling so much on bathroom elimination matters as comparison vehicles.   (What do you think?)

Gestapo agent? I back Cruz and Trump. I have said that Cruz is the smartest guy within 500 mile radius of Washington, but in my opinion he needs to be Trump's apprentice for four years. Then take the corner office for 8 years.

Regardless, calling a FReeper a liar and stupid is unbecoming and, in this case, inaccurate. Channel your anger towards those who deserve it.

Have a nice, anger-free day. :-)

Wrong! What Trump pointed out is simply that most Cubans are Catholic which is true. So maybe Cruz St got born again or whatever. But the Cruz family is not generationally evangelical.

I gave a comparison of how past events have contemporary relevance. You have chosen to write it off. Doesn’t matter one eighth of one feck to me - I readily admit I could be wrong. I do know that if I did have all the answers I sure as shit wouldn’t be wasting my time arguing about it with you.

I will close by simply reminding you that the last time an egotisical billionaire populist captured the imaginations of the more softheaded among us, we got a Clinton in the White House. History, after all, does like to repeat itself.
