Donald Trump was on Face the Nation, and had an epic tantrum. Right now he's so scared of losing to Ted Cruz, he's having to lash out in ridiculous ways. It's interesting seeing what Trump looks like when he's behind, he knows he's behind, and he's wetting-his-pants scared of being the big, fat loser.
Here's the key transcript:
DICKERSON: When you say about Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100%, "Not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba," what does that mean?
TRUMP: Well, it just means that Cuba generally speaking is a Catholic country. And you don't equate evangelicals with Cuba. I don't. I mean, I think of evangelicals, and i have, I guess I am. You know, I'm Presbyterian. I'm Protestant. But I don't see it coming out of Cuba.
DICKERSON: But you're not questioning whether - I mean, as far as you know, he could be more devout than you are.
TRUMP: It's possible. Certainly it's possible. I'm not questioning it. And I say it in a somewhat smiling manner. But there's a little truth to it.
What strikes me first about this is that Trump feels the need to attack Ted Cruz's Christianity as fake. Trump wants you to think that Cruz is a secret Catholic, only pretending to be a Baptist (SBC) in order to get votes in Iowa.
Does anyone actually believe this? If you've ever heard Ted Cruz speak in your life, you know that he's been going to and paying attention in church. His style of speaking is the tell. He gets in your face, he lectures you. He wants you to get right with government. He could sprinkle his speeches with "Can I get an amen?" and it would sound natural. You can't look into his heart and know what he truly believes, but it's obvious he's been going to church and paying attention to his pastors.
But next, it's obvious Trump is pretty out of touch with what's going on in Presbyterianism in America. He's so hot to try to tar Cruz as a secret Catholic, but when given the chance, he's not taking a stand in the great conflict right now in American Presbyterianism. Let me explain.
The biggest Presbyterian Church in our country is the Presbyterian Church (USA). PCUSA currently has about 1.7 million members. That's been dropping for decades, but it started dropping faster in 2012, after the 2011 ratification of Amendment 10-A to the Book of Order, which would allow ordination of non-chaste homosexuals.
The large drop represents entire local churches abandoning PCUSA in favor of the Presbyterian Church in America. PCA takes a much more traditional view on most social issues, and has grown to have about 350,000 members. PCA and PCUSA have had to go to court over the ownership of church buildings and property, of the local congregations who flipped from PCUSA to PCA.
For Trump to speak of himself being Presbyterian, without mentioning which kind of Presbyterian he is, tells me one thing: Trump likely attends church at a PCUSA congregation, which would mean he stuck with the group that permits abortion (it is deemed morally acceptable), homosexual priests, homosexual 'blessings' as pseudo-marriages, and free divorce.
Donald Trump is throwing stones, but the evidence suggests he's got a glass house on this issue. Not a smart tactic, and a mark of scared desperation on his part.
I don’t think so either.
I see where you are coming from with this, but I think this isn't a question of "European descent" and "flyover country" or anything like that. I think Trump is imposing his own experience on Cruz. From what I understand, Trump actually attends an Episcopalian church in Palm Beach and a Reformed Church in New York City. He seems to be a Presbyterian primarily by birth and upbringing. His mother and her family were apparently Evangelical Presbyterians from the Outer Hebrides in Scotland (a rural, traditionalist area). Scotland is an overwhelmingly Presbyterian nation. Trump may well see himself as Presbyterian because his family was from a Presbyterian nation. It's part of his heritage and identity more than part of his current church membership. Cruz's heritage is from the primarily Catholic nation of Cuba, so in Trump's mind maybe Cruz is really Catholic (or at least was influenced by Catholicism growing up). I don't agree at all with this line of reasoning, but I do think Trump thinks of religion in terms of identity as much as practice. At any rate, I don't think this has anything to do with Cruz's ethnicity.
I agree!
Way back when I first heard of Red State I thought they had possibilities, now they have proven they are just a trash recycler.
I didn’t say that Cruz wasn’t a Baptist. One can be almost any sect of Christianity and be a Dominionist.
And Dominionism is about more than a “prayer” strategy.
I think it’s Red State that’s wetting it’s pants at Trump’s massive lead in the polls.
Yeah...let’s go with that...
Then why would you post it???
The math doesn’t add up on that. Trump has over twice the republican base than Cruz, trump draws support from blue dogs, yet Cruz does better against the beast than trump?
Just more meaningless babble from Trump. What difference does it make if “not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba? It doesn’t mean anything, and what is Trump trying to say? Also, so what if there are a lot of Catholics in Cuba? Is there something wrong with that? Is Trump trying to demean Catholicism? He just spews out insults, hoping something will stick.
Que Sera, Sera
Whatever will be, will be
Trump, being potty trained at a young age, as long ago left behind any tendencies to wet his pants. Like the dark won, he continues to wear those with very sharp creases, unstained and bone dry.
“Trump did trot out another lame attack on Cruz’s religion. Why would he do that?”
We can only hope...Trump is setting the bar so high no Republican will be able to come close...
So anyone who doesn’t agree with you that it “matters” is stupid or a child. Just keep insulting Trump supporters, it’s working so well for you. And why do you Cruz or Lose guys have to SHOUT all the time? It doesn’t make you any more right.
Ted changed his position on increasing H1Bs recently. Donald’s position was out last Summer.
Donald’s positions are original. Donald was also the first among many things that resonate with voters, for example, the War on Christmas.
This isn’t about who was first to do whatever or who changed to what’s popular. This is about a general appeal and effectiveness at getting a message out. Donald wins in that context.
One can make a list at where Ted was ‘first to do whatever’ and show that it is longer that Donald’s originals. But it doesn’t matter because it’s not so much the message as it is the messenger. People are choosing Donald to be their messenger. That’s the will of the people. No list can change that.
I don’t doubt the actual headline....I doubt it’s premise.
Bob Dole and W won Iowa on their way to the nomination. Romney damn near did (was actually the announced winner on election night) without even trying. So, 3 out of the last 4 Republican caucuses led to the eventual nominee. On the D side, Iowa has been the site of big wins for Carter, Mondale, Gore, Kerry, and Obama. And losing Iowa can be devistating, as Howard Dean and Mitt Romney (’08) can attest. Howard Dean should be an especially cautionary tale to Trump, as Iowa showed just how thin his support with “real” voters turned out to be.
So is Iowa the be-all, end-all? No, of course not - but it ain’t exactly the Carrol County Fair Corn Poll, either.
Is the author a democrat? Sounds like one. Trumps replies were pretty tame and for once I liked the way he responded.
I’m a Cruz backer but he needs to see a tailor and start to dress like an adult. Buy a few custom tailored suits that fit him at a men’s store instead of Goodwill.
I agree completely...As with the author of this article it's clear people will grab at anything that floats by to use against people they don't like...
A person can't talk as much as Trump does, off the cuff, and not say things once in a while that could be offensive or doesn't make sense...Since Trump hasn't repeated it, I suspect that was the case...Could be he meant to say something else and it didn't come out right so he quit saying it...
That's another disgusting one...When Trump said it was disgusting he wasn't referring to Hillary's bathroom break like many are pretending, he was responding to the remark from someone out in the audience...But the Trump haters are all over it...
