Six Reasons Apple Closed 2015 With a Whimper
Fortune ^ | January 1, 2016 | by Philip Elmer-DeWitt

Posted on 01/01/2016 3:37:02 PM PST by Swordmaker

Judging by the fundamentals--things like revenue, earnings, assets, cash flow, profit margins, and growth--Apple had a very good year.

However shares in the world’s most valuable company finished 2015 down 4% from the beginning of the year and off nearly 22% from their 52-week high.

Why the disconnect?

In my comment stream yesterday, a longtime reader who calls himself Merckel spoke for many frustrated shareholders when he boiled it down to six reasons:

“Any one of the above suggests the stock market is inefficient as hell,” Merckel concludes. “That all of the above apply produces a truly asinine Apple stock price.”

Don’t have their products, but it is interesting watching them as a social phenomenon.

7. CEO Tim Cook thinks his gayness will trump all and inoculate him from all negative business factors.

What negative business factors? Since Tim Cook has been CEO, AAPL is up 90%. That doesn't seem to support your Tim Cook is a failure meme. Irrationality in the stock market stock price of AAPL has no relationship to the real world success of the company Apple inc. Apparently you paid absolutely no attention to the article so you could post your negativity.

I’ll respond to the last item - Perception.

I do think this latest round of IPhones (and Samsung phones) have reached a level of quality, and more importantly Durability, that I would guess people will start holding onto their phones longer. So I could see a slowdown of sales in the US, just because phones are higher quality.

Thimmy Cook actually said “homos are God’s special people”.

That is the opposite of God’s words, pure satanism and beyond disgusting.

I just bought an iPod Touch 6th Gen. I thought for months about buying one but all the reviews stated that if you already have an iPhone (which I do), then it would be irrelevant to also own the iPod Touch.

But I strongly disagree.

I found that I was listening to music on my iPhone a lot less often because I didn't want to run down the battery and I also didn't like phone calls, emails and text messages intruding on my music. I missed the days of my old iPod where it only played music and maybe the occasional TV show when I was on the road.

Since getting the Touch, I am amazed at how much better it is as a music device. I can send the audio through bluetooth into my car stereo or send it over to my home speakers through Airplay. I can stream Sirius XM, Pandora, Spotify and Apple Music over it and if I want to download music I don't own from Apple Music to hear it offline, I can do so. Since I got the 128GB version, I can store 20,000 songs offline before even thinking about running out of space. But storing all of them offline is not that important when you can just stream them over Wi-Fi.

I also put my SoundHound app on it so that if I'm hearing a song I don't recognize it, it will identify it for me and give me the option to add it to my Apple Music playlist or create a Pandora playlist. I also have my Podcast app there as well so another thing I can remove from my iPhone.

It's so light that I don't even notice carrying an extra device around and my main worry is forgetting where I put it.

So for those who listen to a lot of music, it might make sense to get one of these iPod Touches and not rely on your iPhone for all those uses.

I would agree with that. You have listed all of the right reasons IMO. Besides it is not that more difficult to carry two devices. And the touch has wifi. All that is missing is the phone part.

It might be cost effective too since the phone is more expensive and you don’t want to wear out the battery which can’t easily be replaced.

A lot of ‘Not My Fault’ lame excuses. Sounds exactly like what Obama says about his screw ups.

Fact is an outsized PE ratio is not warranted because although a very rich company in cash, their future is nothing but one time gadgets and gizmos. Their service offerings are pretty lame and offer little to anyone not already in the Ecosystem.

Interesting that you mentioned this. Did you see the post from swordmaker about the class action lawsuit from frustrated 4s customers? Apple could end support for older phones thereby forcing customers to buy newer phones. They did this with my ipad and apparently the recent iPhone OS update degraded the functionality of the 4s. So the hardware and battery might be just fine but the phone will be unsupported.

Let me see, what is the rule? Ah, yes - "buy low."

Samsung quality? Must be a joke. I have an S5 and after one year the AMOLED display started to show signs of a bad burnout. Now the display looks terrible. This phone is supposed to be waterproof, but the USB connector cap broke off after one month and the case now looks like it has been in a war, although I always took great care of it.
Same story with a Samsung Grand Prime. Never worked well and they refused to do any repair under warranty, claiming that I damaged it.

What "outsized PE ratio?"

The point is that if AAPL were properly valued, it stock price would be more than three times what it is today.

Sometimes, Okie, it is better to keep your mouth shut, and just be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt. You just shouted out your status.

What is the consensus of the market in general about Samsung? I have had a Galaxy 4 for over 3 years now. It is within an Otter protective case. It looks and works as well as the day I bought it. After the 2 year contract ran out last year, I just didn’t feel the need to buy another phone, whether form Apple or Samsung. The additional features were just not compelling enough to spend the dough.

Chances are, neither my nor your experience is typical. However, if my battery starts showing its age, I can pop a brand new one in my Samsung. You cannot do that with an iPhone.

I just got tired of the CEO getting involved in the Gaystapo, global warming, and other leftist causes. Then I come to freerepublic and get this bunch of paid Apple boosters or insiders who are such obvious Apple cheerleaders that they are pretty far from independent. Of course they never disclose their conflict of interest before writing their Apple cheerleading notes. Kind of the way the media does when they report on politics with a huge bias for Democrats. That’s a big turnoff too.

One of my daughters recently bought an iPod Touch. I questioned her why, if she can do stuff on her phone (an Android phone). Like you, she wanted to keep stuff separated. She is really enjoying the Touch. As for me, my phone is strictly for keeping in contact. I use a TracFone, it does what I want it to do and cheaply. My iPad does the rest, although a Touch my make more sense for portability. I thought the Touch would disappear but lots of folks are buying them by the thousands.
