In a recent disquieting article for the New York Times, Choire Sicha investigates a curious new challenge for gyms: Some men want to shower and change without ever being publicly nude, and they expect their gyms to build locker rooms that accommodate that desire. Drawing upon the experiences of gym managers and architects, Sicha explains that over the last quarter-century, men have grown increasingly uneasy with being naked in the locker room. While older men generally remain comfortable being undressed among others, younger ones insist on maximum privacy, pining for a way to strip, shower, and change clothes without even a flash of nudity.

Open Showers in boot camp and the Barracks was the biggest thing I hated about my early years in the military.

Thanks for your ongoing service. As you may know, the Presidio of San Francisco is no longer an Army post. Likely there aren't non-partitioned toilets in the Army today, but there were when I was at the Presidio from November 1961 until September 1963. Buildings other than the old brick barracks did have partitioned toilets.
No separate shower stalls either in the old brick barracks.
But there's something that doesn't seem quite healthy about men slipping off their underwear behind a towel etc. Maybe it's my old Army days:

Are men being intimidated into some kind of bashfulness or self-consciousness? What about timidity? Our country, our families, and our children are in danger, and we cannot afford to be intimidated by anybody or anything.
Maybe what's unhealthy is a homosexual climate that has begun to pervade gyms that I didn't now anything about. The idea of having photos taken is definitely a serious problem.
Maybe it's time to take the gyms back--along with the rest of the country. Maybe all this is symptomatic of the decadence and degeneration that has afflicted the U.S.A. and will be corrected when we have seized control of our country again. There's obviously something wrong, and it needs to be corrected.

Women say they don’t want a “transgender” man who is anatomically male in the bathroom with them.
Rather than continuing to call the women bigoted for not accepting the man’s female identity, now they attack the very concept of physical privacy when nude.
Or attacking the very right to privacy when naked, when women wouldn’t stop protesting “transgender” men demanding the right to change in front of women.
In fact, the federal government is threatening to take back federal funds from a school district where it said the mentally ill boy COULD change in the girl’s locker room but had to use stalls they set up, and any other girl who wanted privacy could change in stalls, too. But based on liberal standards, the boy isn’t really a girl unless he’s naked in front of the other girls when changing.
Okay, you younger guys. Is this really true? It's been 20 years since I retired and no longer had access to my employer's gym, but at that time no one worried about showering naked in the presence of other men.
Of course, back then the queers were "in the closet." We didn't even know who they were, let alone worry about it.
I would say it probably has more to do with today’s school gym practices then anything. in the 60’s and 70’s we were required to shower after every class and the penalty was a swat.
My 17yr old just looks at me kind of funny when I ask him if he showered after gym today or after his football practice/game...
Heck their not even required to have a gym uniform (shorts and t-shirt), only the t-shirt.

I’m sure they have stalls, which to me means that they can have fewer showerheads, and students have to wait longer to take a shower. My guess.
I shower in the presence of open gays in my work. It’s not a problem. They’re not into me. I don’t spend any more time with my business exposed than necessary, but I don’t go so far as to dress under a towel. I have NEVER seen any of them do or say anything to make anybody else uncomfortable.
