...And 80% of Windows phone owners desert the ecosystem for Android or iOS.
Windows phone shipments took a nose-dive in the third quarter, plummeting 35% from the same period in 2014, researcher Gartner said today.
By comparison, total global smartphone shipments climbed 15% in the third quarter.
Of the 353 million smartphones shipped in the September quarter worldwide, less than 6 million were powered by Microsoft's Windows, making Windows' share 1.7%, Gartner estimated, down from 3% in the same quarter of 2014.
Windows phones shipments tumbled in some of the historic strongholds for the OS, said Roberta Cozza, a Gartner analyst. "In both Latin America and in emerging markets, there were strong declines," Cozza said in a Wednesday interview. "Consumers are moving on to Android. I just don't think that the Lumia brand is strong anymore in the mid to lower end. Microsoft's message doesn't resonate with price conscious consumers."
The September quarter was the first full period since Microsoft announced a major retrenchment of its smartphone business and the strategy that had guided it. In July, even though it had written off billions former CEO Steve Ballmer sunk into acquiring Nokia's handset business the year before, Microsoft said it would continue to manufacture devices and push other OEMs to use Windows.
CEO Satya Nadella repudiated Ballmer's plans, but he denied that the company was exiting the business. Instead, he spelled out a strategy that would tightly focus on Windows loyalists, value-oriented consumers, and business workers.
From all evidence, that's not worked...

You guys may want to ping your lists on this one...
I had a couple of terrific Nokia phones back in the days of analog cell phones. Switched to an LG flip phone and then to an iPhone. These days, Windows phones would have to convince me pretty hard to switch, but I don't hold anything against them. There are a few things I don't like about the iPhone, although not many. But I'll bet Windows 10 works pretty darn well on a phone.
I will say, though, that Nokia made great phones back in the day.
I am.
I have been for several years.
The technology is finally close to hitting the market.
Perhaps it is not the phone sales but the economy that is collapsing.
Not sure that explains it... the article claims the overall smartphone market is growing rather nicely...
It can't be that because Apple iPhone sales are booming. . . and they are more expensive.
I have a Lumia 822 from Verizon, which didn’t ever push out the upgrade to 8.1. I did it myself by installing the developers SDK. I love it, but I wonder if Verizon will even have a Windows 10 phone. My Nokia is getting old. I want to replace it, and I can only use Verizon because no other network has coverage where I live.
I’ve only seen one person so far using a Microsoft smartphone in all my time.
Hilarious. . . Gartner was convinced, and argued vociferously that Microsoft phones would be the number 2 smartphones by 2015 with a 19.5% market share and iPhones would be declining starting in 2012. . . and in third place. . . and that RIM would still be a significant player. ROTFLMAO!
I use Windows in all my PCs. I have since Windows 95. I have no reason to use a Windows phone. I don’t draft a lot of documents or spreadsheets on my phone. Android works just fine.
I would normally quip that "I'd like to have some of what they were smoking" but in fact it was clearly some pretty bad drugs... that's just so embarrassing it amazes me that they show their faces in public.
I'm reminded of that classic video of Ballmer laughing at the first iPhone that SamAdams76 posted above...
That’s a shame. I actually like WP. It’s cleaner than android, a real alternative to iOS Android is a poor man’s iOS really. I like having alternatives. I suspect WP to go the way of the Zune soon.
Zunephone?
The technology is finally close to hitting the market.
Do you still have a Betamax?
