Japanese film-makers have created a robot movie star - by casting an android 'actress' in a lead role.
The robot co-stars alongside a human in the film 'Sayonara' set in the aftermath of a deadly nuclear power plant meltdown in Japan.
The android, called Geminoid F, was designed to look and act like a human with rubber 'skin' and a woman's face - but it is unable to walk and is wheeled around in the film.
Geminoid F - or Leona in the film - is referred to by director Koji Fukada as an 'actress,' and the android is even listed as a member of the cast in the end credits.
While robots have featured prominently in many films, most are played by real actors or created using visual effects.
Geminoid F was produced by Hiroshi Ishiguro, a renowned robot designer at Osaka University in western Japan, whose androids come with a £776,000 price tag.
Geminoid F was cheaper - just £72,000, which Ishiguro hopes may take the technology closer to the mainstream.

They don't cheat and work tirelessly. On the other hand, they could be programmed to be hardcore liberals. There will be a pitched struggle to put robots of their kind at Capitol Hills by conservatives and liberals. Since Silicon Valley is owned by liberals, we may be at a disadvantage.
Japanese sexbot Ping!
Soon Lydia...soon...
Funny how they call it “android” (male) when a term exists for a female-looking one (”gynoid”).
Besides, unless it has some kind of autonomy due to artificial intelligence (oxymoron?), isn’t it an automaton?
Agreed. It would take a while to achieve it. Even at a moderate level. It is just that progress has been made to the level that so-called robots can take over tasks performed by humans. The scope of automation has increased significantly in recent years.
Hey, I just discovered a new insult.
"That Obama fellow is such a gynoid."
>>OK, Carly now faces a stiff competition. In time, some robot will make a better politician than most of current corrupt and incompetent crops.<<
That is like saying she will be soon the best yodeler in Harlem.
The cool part of the movie is where the gynoid gets a job assembling Toyotas.
And this robot is different from human actresses in what way exactly?
It does not make donation to Hillary.
From the looks of it, we’re still
a ways from the Uncanny Valley.
It’s coming ladies, it’s coming.
It probably is not demanding a luxury dressing room.
Yuck.
DANG!
Wierd
It can act better than Ben Affleck we know that.
2 things:
A. Since she has no real legs and is therefore immobile, she really turns me on and is on my bucket list.
B. Referring to point a above; I would hit that over and over and over again for hours at a time
It has at least the emotional range of a Kristen Stewart.
Coming sooner that we think, to a newspaper near you - “Stepford wives” on sale this week at Target.
Isn’t there some religion that believes G*d drove Man out of a certain garden because for seeking forbidden knowledge?
Robot with a human face? Not Carly, but Hillary... Semi human, anyway
Or planned parenthood.
