If a giant solar flare hit the Earth, it could knock out the entire power grid, meaning no more new Taylor Swift singles, no more televised presidential debates, and no more Facebook photos of babies. But it wouldn't be all good news. The Washington Postreports the elecromagnetic pulseâor EMPâcreated by such an event could wipe out electricity for months on end, creating a global catastrophe. That's why the White House released its National Space Weather Strategy on Thursday. According to the Houston Chronicle, the multiagency plan details how the US will prepare forâand deal withâa massive EMP from space. The six-step plan requires government agencies, schools, the media, the insurance industry, nonprofits, and more to work together. In other words: We might be doomed.

Good time to point out to the eco Nazis that this is also what the world would be like under “green” energy.
Non-fossil fuels only meet about 10-15% of the energy demand. What that translates to for the mathematically illiterate enviros is that living on green energy would be like have your power out 27 days every month. Most people start getting pretty upset after just 1 day.
And the outage above is not just to your house, it’s also transportation. Imagine no gas/coal to power things up 27 days per month, so you can’t count on public trans either.
Oh yeah, and groceries would only be able to be delivered to the store at that same 10% rate - if even, considering the clerks and truck drivers have to live with the same absence of power...
I need to watch that Mad Max trilogy again.
If Government is involved, we’ll be thrown back into the Dark Ages.
What’s that quote about the Government running the Sahara Desert and it running out of sand? ;)
Best to have your hope in things above....
I seem to remember some seeking shelter in caves and crying for rocks to fall on them.
judging from the pristine condition of the rail line (and the euro-trash license plate)this photo is from Germany, Austria, or some such, and not USA or Canada.
(We note the absence of thug grafitti on the rolling stock as an additional location qualifier.)
But point well taken. Heavy TXFRS could never be replaced in time to avert a great “dieoff” in the cities now lacking any sense of social cohesion even today.
Tougher than this:
It won’t matter much if the generation, transmission and distribution systems are hardened when every single end-device is fried. Except for my huge cache of incandescent light bulbs, that is. If they harden the power system, you’ll be able to find me in the well lit house.
I just finished reading “One Second After,” a book about an EMP attack against the U.S. It was not a pretty sight...food, clean water, pharmaceuticals all gone in a few short months. Mass disease epidemics and starvation. Mad Max bands roaming and destroying cities. Zero communications. Very few people with the skills to restore old pre-electronics machinery. Ammunition running out after a year. Game wiped out in the forests. People fleeing crumbling cities for the country side where they think they’ll find food. Harvests and stock rotting and dying because there is no transportation to bring them to market.
It is a shocking book, but it all seems quite plausible. The real threat is N. Korea or Iran launching nukes to 200 miles from freighters, probably much less so from solar flare-induced Compton Events.
It is settled science that solar flares are unquestionably attracted to green house gasses. Without this magnetic attraction, we’d never be in danger.
Another scientist has been given a grant to see if there is a correlation between cancer causing pork meat and the solar flares attraction to earth.
I think we all need to turn in our guns and ask for protection.
“Cheap to guard against EMP.” You have to change out EVERY device with an IC in it. Not just in consumer goods, but every single commercial and industrial control system. The magnitude of that is staggering...as is the expense. What industry will invest in that with zero return?
Sorry, it may be cheap.
It would be cheap if you build the necessary hardening into new products, but it will take 40 or 50 years to replace all control systems through the normal replacement/upgrade process.
It would take a government order to accelerate that to maybe ten years.
It’s ironic — in the pre-nuclear EMP era, most industrial and commercial control systems were pneumatic. As long as you could keep your air compressors running, you had functioning controls. Pneumatic controls were the ultimate EMP-hardened devices. Over the past 40 years, most control systems converted to electronic and are susceptible and vulnerable, just as our enemies have developed nukes and delivery systems. This is not a good situation we find ourselves in.
Yes, I read the book and it’s an ugly situation.
I think Iran has already started to produce what it will take to EMP us.
While Solar Flares are certainly a valid concern, I’m much more worried about Iran or the Norks (or Russia or China, for that matter) sending us to the Stone Age via EMP blasts.
...but since worrying about nuclear attacks puts one in the same kook-house as worrying about martians attacking, I’m perfectly happy if we prepare for a Solar Flare, as the initial results from either will be similar (although I’d expect follow-up attacks from an EMP strike).
Those solar flares are obviously caused by GoreBull warming, don’tcha know....
This gov’t is putting out a cover-butt article.
Ted Koppel has a new book: “Lights Out” - he was on the Charlie Rose show than played all week - and is being covered widely on other outlets.
He is finally exposing what anyone not brain dead - which is a high percentage of Americans today - even Freepers - should be totally aware of - it should NOT be a big “Oh MY” to anyone.
Better take a page, as Koppel says, from the Mormons - and I would add, the Amish. Those who will have a chance to get through it - will have their own well, gardens, fruit bushes/trees, chickens/eggs, know how to hunt/trap - put up the fall harvest for winter - IOW, be able to live like my grandparents did.
Only, they still had use of a car - ie; transportation. That is going to be major.
battery operated radios are inexpensive - communication will be vital.

FORGET freeze dried and MRE/s! Expensive and unhealthy. Put up seeds and learn how to sprout.
Learn how to ‘oven can” dry goods, like flour
Learn how to make butter
learn how to gather seed from your garden for the following year
Learn how to dehydrate
Learn how to trap small game
etc etc - you can get it all on YouTube
Learn how to make laundry/hand soap and the 3 ingredients you need on hand.
Learn how simple it is to make cottage cheese
etc etc
If you wait for Gov’t to take care of you, you’ll have a long wait: how long can you go without food/water? And who’s fault will it be?
YOURS,

It doesn’t have to be complicated

So many soap recipes you run across have a long list of different types of oils to use. And each oil requires a different amount of water and lye to saponify correctly. I recently ran across this nice and simple 3 ingredient soap recipe.

“FORGET freeze dried and MRE/s! Expensive and unhealthy.”
Nonsense! These are excellent alternatives until the situation stabilizes to some extent. For those with little or no land, these ARE the options. ANd it takes a bit of land to support 2-4 people, throughout all the seasons. Freeze-dried foods are excellent! MRE? For true near-term, immediate emergencies only, and “day trips”.
how are they going to tell us why? if we can’t communicate, how will they? If the military and police can get around THEN it’s a set up.
If no one but Russians and Chinese show up, it could still be a set up.
However, what they do not understand is that the population in those bunkers will behave/misbehave like any other group of people under similar stress. In fact, given all the “wizards” that would be “saved”, it may be worse, based on who is/are the considered chiefs and who is are considered the indians.

Thanks for the link. It appears to be very simple, using only three ingredients: coconut oil, lye, and water, provided coconut oil can be had during the hard times. She also slammed the use of lye as dangerous, but then used it in her formula. When growing up on the farm (back in the 50’s), we used lye and livestock fat. Worked great. Plus boiling off the fat resulted in these crispy crinkles that were to die for. Literally! :-)
