Microsoft's decision to push out Windows 10 upgrades as automatic Windows Update downloads is one of those ideas that sounded great in a Redmond meeting room, but will cause more problems than it solves.
Right from the get-go Microsoft has made it clear that it is looking for a very fast rollout of Windows 10. The new operating system was offered as a free upgrade for some users – a first for Microsoft – and ever since the launch, Microsoft has been hustling people to upgrade, by fair means or foul.
Earlier this month El Reg's tips inbox hit overload with readers complaining that Windows 10 was downloading itself automatically whether or not the end user had opted in or wanted to install it. For people with suddenly crammed hard drives, this was a huge pain in the backside and it caused a lot of anger.
Nowadays, if you boot up a Windows 7 or 8 system you'll see a variety of popups encouraging you to upgrade – roughly every few days, based on Vulture West's experience. These are annoying but perfectly legitimate advertising.
But deciding to make the upgrade part of the patching cycle is a grave mistake. True, it's only going to be an optional upgrade at the moment, but by early next year the pressure is going to be raised, and anyone who automatically installs recommended security patches will find themselves with a new operating system waiting to start.
And just about everyone installs recommended updates automatically because Microsoft insists on it...

As for me and my household, we use Linux. Microsuck can go pound sand.
I don't care what Microsoft wants or doesn't want. My computer hardware is my personal property, bought and paid for, and the license I agreed to with their previous OS doesn't give them the moral, ethical, or legal right to change ANY software on my property. If they do this, I hope someone sues them till they die.
In reality, it should be a criminal (hacking) matter, not a civil matter. If you or I broke into someone's computer and deleted software, we'd end up in the hoosegow, and rightly so. They shouldn't get away with it just because they're a software manufacturer. Would you or I get awsy with doing that by saying "Oopsie, we set the default to 'Fuck me'. Our bad, sorry (but you still don't get your old OS back. Have a nice day!"?
I'm a creature of habit and HATE change; nor do I manage to do well with this kind of change. Just WHY do I need this new crap, when I don't play games, watch T.V. on my laptop, play music, or GOD only knows what this crap upgrade also does?

The tech giant shows no signs of slowing the rollout of its new operating system, utterly undeterred by the growing public outcry at its pushy attitude.
Windows 10 already appears as a free "optional" update for some Windows 7 and 8.1 systems, and soon this will be widened to all machines running a genuine copy of Win 7 and 8.1.
Then early next year, Windows 10 will become a free "recommended" update – meaning it will be immediately downloaded by any PC or device that automatically installs "important" and "recommended" updates.
Windows 10 will therefore find its way onto potentially millions more machines because Microsoft recommends that people always install "important" and "recommended" updates automatically.
Once the new operating system is fetched, users will be asked if they want to boot into Windows 10.

And?? I don't want someone breaking into my house, even if they're leaving diamonds. It's MY HOUSE, and they can stay the fsck out till I invite them.
Oh great.....I have less than NO idea what you’re talking about, which means that IF/when they stick this crap on med, I won’t be able to do anything on my laptop. :-(
It’s a great idea. Win10 is much better.
The key to avoid all this heartburn is obviously to run a non-genuine i.e. bootleg copy like I do (though I rarely boot into Windows). No Windows 10 pestering at all!

Well, I don't recommend that strategy. It assumes Microsoft got everything right the first time. We know for certain that isn't true.

Guess it depends on how you use your computer. I’ve slowed my hardware updates down to once every 2-3 years—my current main current computer is Intel i7 with 20GB memory, 3x 32” 4K displays, 3x 27” 1920x1080 display, drawing tablets, scanners, printers and more. Windows 10 supports the six displays and the varied devices seemlessly. I’m also running Microsoft Office 2016 and most of my other software is newest versions. Keeping at or near the bleeding edge gives me high performance and latest features.
"Better" is not the issue (I think it's a fine OS too, BTW).
The issue is freedom of choice to stay with the OS you know and love, and your software works with.
I don't play music, I don't watch T.V. programs or movies on my laptop, it's NOT attached to anything else at all, and even though at least 30 different people have tried to teach me how to CCP, over the last 18 years, the ONLY time I ever managed to sort of do it was when I had each step written down for me and I did what the paper ( which I have by now lost ) in front of me. I HATE change and Windows 10 is NOT anything that I need nor want.
Thanks so much for that info! I just changed my setting so Windows can’t automatically download as they have in the past.
I removed 10 from everything except a laptop with WiFi so I could use the metered connection to slow down updates. I’m not so enthralled with the new OS anymore.

I upgraded all 4 of my laptops July 29th, 2 of which had been upgraded from Vista to 7 in 2009. I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want to upgrade to a much better and more secure Windows.

The only thing worse than a PC upgraded from one version of Windows to the next is the ‘downgrade’ back to the original OS that MS promises is possible.
It all will eat up huge chunks of gigabytes on disk that MS apparently believes it is entitled to but much worse than that is any machine with a hybrid of two OS versions especially Windows.
Hell, even MS themselves will suggest that a clean install of any single Windows version is the only sane, stable platform you should use.
This is marketing deprtment madness...MS is hijacking millions of end users’ systems so they can claim to Wall Street and/or critics that Windows 10 has market penetration and uptake of xxx%.
PC sales are being cannibalized by tablet sales as well, further reducing bundled Windows OEM sales volume.
Great, now I find out the pirated copies get the upgrade too.
