Biologists at UC San Diego have discovered that bacteria--often viewed as lowly, solitary creatures--are actually quite sophisticated in their social interactions and communicate with one another through similar electrical signaling mechanisms as neurons in the human brain.
In a study published in this week's advance online publication of Nature, the scientists detail the manner by which bacteria living in communities communicate with one another electrically through proteins called "ion channels."

So when I hear talking in my head, I’m not nuts?
The ISIS of the microbial world...
Yeah that sounds about right and they are conspiring against us.
Are you really smarter than 100 billion bacteria all talking to each other and making important decisions about what you thought of as YOU? Maybe those bacteria are the actual YOU who are running the show and what you thought was YOU is just a parasite.
Maybe they're YOU, and trying to get people to turn away from themselves and embrace being bacteria. After all, doesn't that literally define a liberal?
Yeast also are able to communicate with each other.
As the single cell ‘communicates’ does the bacteria have sentience and self-awareness? What assesses what is communicated? I suspect we are simply seeing an experiment which demonstrates a measurable difference of potential across the cell membrane or cell wall. This report is nonsense, clear and simple.
The importance of this study is not so much that they communicate as their behavior indicated that they do, it’s the similarity to our brain activity and that of other higher animals.
