A Bronx principal ordered her teachers to give up their desks last week, and had the furniture dumped at the curb telling staff she doesnt want them sitting in class.
Donna Connelly, principal of PS 24, the Spuyten Duyvil School in Riverdale, also told teachers to empty their filing cabinets, which she then discarded. With class in session, teachers were told to push their desks and cabinets into the hallway. Custodians then hauled them outside and piled them like trash on the blacktop of a school across the street.

She has a “theory.”
She’d get another theory in a hurry when I (were I a teacher) sued the school board for “reasonable accommodation” for my plantar fasciitis. There are many people who can’t stand all day. I think she’s about to hear from some of them.
I can see the point in this to a degree. There are several teachers at my kid’s school that teach. Up at the white board, talking, roaming while kids do their work, etc. They don’t use a desk much during class time. Obviously they use it for off periods to grade and store stuff.
Other, lousy teachers pass out a worksheet and tell the kids to work on it in groups. Then sit at their desks browsing on-line for clothes, etc. If the kids have a question? “Okay - then you can ask another group if you have to.”
Then the following day spend a few minutes going over what the kids did wrong on their worksheets, then hand out new worksheets on another topic.
They call it “exploration learning” or something.
I read this and almost lost my $5 coffee.
1. I’m surprised a principal has so much power.
2. Can you say OSHA?
3. Influenced by Bloomberg the open office fanatic?
4. The kids’ medications now sitting on the radiator—that one takes the cake.
Of course - I never thought of getting rid of the desks. Just the lousy teachers. (The principal didn’t like that idea either.)
And how much money just wasted? And what about a handicapped instructor, a veteran who might not be able to stand all day. Stupid.
What are the odds that that furniture was really removed because somebody could profit off new furniture?
Women’s shoes can’t handle this.
Where are the teacher’s union and patent/teacher organization on this?
4 am bump!
Maybe they can get Marcella Sills in to take over. It appears she’s still employed by the district.
Exactly. Even for teachers who don't spend much of their time sitting at the desk, they still need desks. If this principal blames the desks for the bad teachers, perhaps it's not the desks that should be gotten rid of.
Ya think you’ve seen and heard it all—and then something this stupid and outrageous comes along Every teacher in that school should walk off the job and not come back until this nut job is gone ...
Does the pincipal have a desk in her office?
Can you believe the Dept. of Education SUPPORTS this nutcase? I really don’t think it’s legal to not allow people to sit down all day. And, there are surely some teachers with health conditions or pregnancies who really cannot stand all day.
Teachers’s union? Hah. They take $1200 from your paycheck every year. Good luck in getting them to return a call from the voicemail you get every single time you call the union office. They’re too busy off cozying up to the Dept. of Education under the table. So the poor teacher saps get to subsidize the union slime’s livin’ large on their dime, with very little to see for the money. You leave a voicemail, good luck in them even returning your call. To really get someone, you have to drive over to their office building and camp out there until you get to see someone. Great return for all that money, right?
According to the article, the teachers still have chairs, just not desks or file cabinets.
If these teachers put up with this crap, they’re too dumb to be teaching our children ..
“According to the article, the teachers still have chairs, just not desks or file cabinets.”
That is just more proof that the principal is insane or stupid. Is the sitting, or the desks the cause of problems? She says it is sitting but throws out the desks. Filing cabinets? That would mean she is both insane and stupid. Most school districts mandate personal files on students be kept under lock and available at a moments notice for the teachers.
