Founder and editor-in-chief Hugh Hefner, 89, who in his trademark silk pajamas has embodied the Playboy lifestyle, agreed last month with a suggestion by top editor Cory Jones to stop publishing images of naked women, the Times said.
At a time when every teenage boy has an Internet connected phone and the web is rife with pornography, the magazine has opted to continue featuring women in provocative poses, just not completely nude, the Times said.
"You're now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free," Flanders was quoted as saying in the Times. "And so it's just passe at this juncture."
The magazine that featured Marilyn Monroe on its debut cover in 1953 is making the changes after circulation dropped from 5.6 million in 1975 to about 800,000 now, the Times said.
After its initial success, the magazine was attacked from the political right because of the nudity and from the left by feminists who said it reduced women to sex objects.
Some changes are still under debate, including whether there will continue to be a centerfold. Playboy magazine's sex columnist will be a woman, who writes enthusiastically about sex, Jones told the Times.
The magazine has always had intellectual appeal with top writers such as Kurt Vonnegut, Joyce Carol Oates, Vladimir Nabokov, James Baldwin and Alex Haley for men who liked to say they did not buy the magazine just for the pictures.

The change now enables Playboy to be sold in places that used to be off-limits, like grocery stores. It also will permit minors to purchase the magazine.
Interestingly, the new magazine will be larger in size and printed on a thicker, more high quality paper making it more expensive. It will probably take a couple of years before Playboy is no longer associated with nudity. I saw this coming a long time ago. I even have posts on this forum predicting a future where Playboy nixed the nudity and re-booted itself as a high-brow Maxim or Esquire.
I doubt it will be enough to save them. Print media is on the way out no matter how you look at it.

"You're now one click-a-deedick away from every foul and perverted sex act imaginable for free-deedle dee dee," Flanders was quoted as saying in the Times. "And so it's just a tiny bit passe at this juncturerooney."
A world without pretty women ain’t no world I want to be in
LOl, you are probably correct and much more ‘worldly’ than I. Normally I find my reading material at the local library. The only magazines ever purchased on a regular basis were Southern Living, Womans Day, Family Circle, and Cosmo. After the Clinton hoop-la and the media turning over to support and defend both Bill/Hill, I swore I’d no longer give a dime to the publishers of no truth, no class. Not purchased those in years. LOL to be frank, they are not missed as only the recipes were wanted. Fault here as the times are changing too fast for me to keep up and I don’t like that. After years of life its a challenge to completely change and follow suit.
Not that this bothers me, but isn’t the purpose for which Playboy exists to publish pictures of nude women?
In my misspent youth there were basically three magazines to choose from, Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler. The Playboy girls were beautiful, real classy looking. I remember one in particular, Debra Jo Fondren. Blond hair to her ankles.
As for the other end of the spectrum there’s Hustler. I never could enjoy seeing a girl with her legs spread so wide you could see her tonsils.
Still ten times the viewers as MSNBC
Playboy still has better boobs than MSNBC.
No matter where I go, I always see signs of racism and racial imbalance. For instance, white guys have quality dirty magazines like Playboy, Penthouse and Club.
What do black guys have? Players Magazine, the lowest, nastiest publication on the face of the earth. The pictures aren’t even in focus. They show a bunch of black girls getting off the toilet, trying to shield their faces. It’s like the women are saying, “Hey, what are you doing in here? Are you crazy? What’s wrong with you, you pervert?” I guess they don’t even bother to ask permission to take the pictures in the first place.
In Playboy, the women are posed sensually, like they’re happy and getting paid. In Players, the women look mad, like they’re only getting ten dollars and their pimp is taking eight.
In Playboy, the women don’t have a blemish on their bodies. In Players, the model’s got stretch marks from the eight kids she’s had, plus the bullet wound from the time she got shot in the a—.

Thanks! That was worth a quick "Google" (and by that I mean "image search"!)
I have no doubt it will soon be called Victor/Victorias secret.
I bet the mentally/sexually deranged crowd are infiltrating that establishment even now.
Imagine, if you dare, the next time you go to purchase that something special for the object of your lust....the large bosomed beauty attending you may secretly be....hung like a horse!
Just having to wonder, to try not to think about it.
I give up.
Every thing I buy for the wife, I will buy on line.
At least I won’t have to have the mental argument with myself.
I despise the 21st century.
So now you won’t be lying when you say you read Playboy for the articles.
Another amusing tale of PB mags...
We lived in a lovely middle class neighborhood in coastal Turkey for 2 years while serving in the USAF. There was an incessant stream of Turks coming by, looking for *rags* [old USA clothing, any condition], magazines, old Sears catalogs, anything they could get...or trade for odd jobs.
A MP who lived next to us had a subscription to PB; turns out his wife could sell the mags for $5 each. Which in the ‘60s, to me, seemed like a lot of money. Well, she sold a big stack of them to a Turkish national/$5. each.
The next day he was back with the stack....screaming and with animated yelling ....wanted his money back. I had to translate for her. He complained that all the centerfolds were torn out ...AND HE WANTED HIS $$$ BACK!!! She said to me, yes, she tore them all out....and had been using them to line the cat’s litter box b/c they *fit so perfectly*.LOL
By then, she had spent the money on groceries so I made her a quick pay-day loan, to pay back the Turk. Today’s climate , with the West being so hated.....we might have been decapitated for want of PB centerfolds.
As a kid, watching for delivery of issues of National Geographic ....and how *educational* they were.
My dad had Playboy early as I remember...1962
Debbie Fondren
Beaumont TX gal
Beautiful long hair
I had several personal connections to Playboy girls
I like girls
I’m accused of being a womanizer here...lol
I agree hustler too scapula ish
Guccione had a nice touch too in 70s
More graphic but feminine and soft
Playboy centerfolds haven't had staples since 1985.
ZZZZZZZzzzzZZZzZZZZZZzzZZZZZZ
LOL The changes we see occur constantly are just too great and far too many. From the change in just exactly how many planets are in our solar System, to the attempt to readjust in understanding just what laws will be followed this year as compared to the past 200 years. From setting the oven, repairing an auto, enjoying television. If one doesn’t suffer from high blood pressure...they soon will. I’ve come to the conclusion to sleep until 2020 and then wake to find all the changes have taken place and are locked in. Then I’ll carry on with the remaining years in peace (hopefully!)
