Slow down and count kids before you drive off. I have 5.

If you've never had kids then naturally you think this is awful. But, if you've had kids then you know how this can happen.

I left my newborn second child out in the driveway in his carrier on the day we brought him home. I was busy getting my wife, my first child and my 6 year old step-daughter out of vehicles and into the house and settled in.

Wasn't used to having a third child. A bit later I thought: "Something's missing". Then I remembered! There he was snoozing in his carrier sitting on the concrete next to the car. LOL!

He's 20 now and this is a family story we love to tell.

"I'm a good mom who made a horrible mistake,"

Uh, wrong.

"Peterson returned to look for her baby within 40 minutes..."

1. She has three other children.

2. This baby is two months old. She must be exhausted.

3. Along with everything else, she was grocery shopping with all four children. That's not easy.

4. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes.

I hate to say it, but this woman was right. I left one of my daughters in a bank once because I was running a Christian day-camp and had gone down to town to buy supplies. My daughter was supposed to be with her age group and go wherever they were going. But at the very last moment, she got in my car, and then when we got to the bank - it turned out to be a long and complicated transaction - she wandered off.

And by the time I left, I had literally forgotten that she had been with me.

The bank called me, of course, and it was extremely embarrassing to come back and get my daughter, particularly since she was having a great time and being fed cookies by the bank staff!

If this woman was a known substance abuser or had been known to be abusive or neglectful toward her children, I can see charging her, but one time? No.

The ones to go after are those who leave the kids in a hot car while they go gambling or getting their nails done. Or the ones who go meet their “connection” with the little ones in the car. These are the ones who shouldn’t be allowed near a child.

My sense of it is that this was an honest mistake. One she feels terrible about--- one that could have had potentially tragic repercussions --- but still an honest mistake.

If all parents (even, or especially, good parents) would take a moment and remember back to the worst missteps they made with their kids, oh my goodness, how it all comes rolling back. Literal 2-second slips that wind up with the kid in the hospital --- Ai, ai, ai, don't ask me. It was awful.

Leaving your baby in a grocery cart and getting him back again in just over half an hour, safe and happy, is very much in the "Thank You, Dear Jesus" category.

And I never took my other kids out of the car,

She left two young children in the car while she was shopping?

Judge should offer her deferred adjudication if she gets her tubes tied.

when I was 3 or 4 I was the child left behind by my parents. it is my first distinct fully formed memery that I have. My parents had 5 children I was second to youngest. My parents had a wedding to go to that was a two hour drive away my grand parents and an aunt was at the house. there were three cars loaded up with kids and relatives. I was left behind because each car thought I was in a different car. the mistake was only discovered a half an hour after getting to the wedding... my parents called a neighbor who discovered me out in front of our house crying because it was locked up and I could not get into the house.........
My Parents are good people some times mistakes happen. I am more concerned about abusive parent then parents that make a mistake like leaving a kid behind. the only fault I can find with the parent is not calling 911 immediately when this happened but this is still not being a bad parent.

When I was a cub scout, my troop went into the big city to see a major league baseball game! The guy in charge left me and a friend at the ball park.

I got to ride home in a police car, so that was awesome.

I took my 6 year old son to Busch Gardens, Williamsburg way back when.

After leaving the park, we were both tired and hungry. He went to the back seat of our VW bus, and I drove toward our motel. I had to make a pit stop at a park, and when I got back into the bus, I drove away.

When we got to the motel, I went in to the office to get a newspaper to check movie schedules. We headed to get some food. I had to make a pit stop at a park, and when I got back into the bus, I drove away. BUT, I stopped when I didn't see him on the back seat and panic set in!

I drove back to the rest stop, and no son. I drove back to the motel, and the manager met me in front to tell me my son was in our room already.

Son had gotten out while I was in the office, and walked toward our room. When the boy saw daddy drive away. He started crying and running, but they saw him, and told him to relax.

I got our and huge him soon tight. All the time, I was thinking how I would explain this to Mommy! Fortunately, I was able to take him home with me!!!

But Gilbert police say Peterson returned to look for her baby within 40 minutes when she realized her mistake.

Poorly worded sentence. Did it take her 40 minutes before realizing her mistake? Or did she take 40 minutes to get there after realizing her mistake.

I can understand. When my two kids were small, my wife put them both in the car to do some shopping. She had to load the car seat, the baby bucket, the various bags, blankets, etc. Finally, after she loaded everything, she backed out of the garage. She forgot only one thing! She forgot to open the garage door.

The baby was spotted almost immediately by an off-duty Phoenix police officer, who took the infant into a nearby Supercuts salon.

Supercuts? WTH?

We’ve had women here in Phoenix leave their kids in a car in 105 degree heat while they go into a bar. Another went to a job interview and left her kid out in the car. This was a completely different situation.
