Haven't done one for a while and with all that is going on I though it would be a good idea to do a Weekly Prepper Thread, for posting tips, new products, good prep buys etc.....
There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.
Underestimation can be fatal.
I don’t usually cook them long enough for them to get mushy unless I forget them and cook them too long.
I also, sometimes cook them in my crock pot on high. Nice and firm when ready.
I’ve actually been thinking about pressure canning some beans. I almost always have a bunch of chili bricks in the freezer. When I get hungry for a bowl of chili and beans, I never want to wait until I cook some.
It also helps with my rotation, since anything like meat in the freezer or beans on the shelf can sometimes be more than we can eat, I just can it.
When the corn was harvested, I didn’t have enough space in the freezer for it. However, I did have a 10 lb. bag of cheap chicken. So I canned the chicken and that made enough room for the corn. Part of which I left on the cobb and in the husks.
That got me to thinking. We have a foldable cot-light weight aluminum frame. That would be a good use for it. Especially with a couple of tires of some sort.
Good idea! I haven’t canned beans yet, but it can’t be harder than meat. Just have to find out whether to partially cook them before canning. Canning companies sure do a great job getting their beans just the right doneness.
I’ve canned stuff I had frozen too, to make room , LOL! When I was first infatuated with canning, I looked around to find things to can - frig, pantry, freezer, i went a bit overboard.
Back to teeth,, I’ve heard lower dentures can be a problem and since that’s where I want them, i didn’t push it. not yet. maybe when my $10k bridge needs replacing! Have you thought about a bridge or partial?

I DO need to be able to put my hands on things and SEE them; some abstract concepts are hard for me to grasp. (I took a class in Coastal Geomorphology once, and had the hardest time understanding ‘neutral buoyancy’, and the fact that ‘waves are not water’. Then somebody showed me a cartoon, and all was immediately understood :-)
My husband has the app for the test; he’s gotten 100% several times. I won’t do that well, but I’m confident I’ll pass.

So how much salt and sugar do you keep in reserve?
When I first saw videos of the cinder block rocket stove, I wondered where I could find a discarded gas range burner grate. A few days later I went to the local thrift store and found one staring at me. First time I’d ever seen one there ;-)
Thrift stores are good for lots of prep stuff; lately I’ve been getting pristine Mason jars for lots less than buying them new.
I have seen people comment that the concrete is not the best material, and that it might explode. What do you think is the best? I’ve also seen them made with bricks...

I bought a thermal cooker that you heat for a few minutes and then put in a thermal holder that keeps them hot for hours. I hope this cooks beans.
I have a bridge on the bottom - got that when I got all the rest fixed. 500 bucks back then - anchored by one jaw tooth, and two closer to the front. Covers for 2 missing teeth.
We tried a partial for the uppers. It didn’t work. Regular molds wouldn’t fit. Had to go back for a custom mold. Lab couldn’t do it. I have a calcium deposit on the roof of my mouth that kinda messes stuff up, and would cause a bit of discomfort, so I just said maybe later when I absolutely have to.
I still have five teeth counting from the two middle teeth on the right, and above the bridge. So as long as stuff is tender I do pretty good. Right side sometimes gets tired and a bit sensitive though. Two of those teeth are root canaled and capped.

I gave one and it won’t cook dried beans. The beans must be in “boiling” water to cook. Once cooked, they will stay hot a long time in that thermal cooker. Veggies not as hard as beans will cook in the thermal cooker.

“gave one” is “have one”. I’m typing on a very small computer and sometmes hit the wrong key and don’t know it.
Predictions are basically opinions, and we know what opinions are like! But, people get married to a particular prediction (or predictor), and take it personally when presented with a differing opinion. Thus, the pissing matches. Just like sports, religion, or politics, in many ways.
Maybe, when pinging the list, you could include a category for what kind of article it is. For example:
Predictions:
“How and When the Market Will Fall”, “Experts Say Stock Up On This Item”, etc. Anything that concerns a specific future event. Those who want a debate are likely to find one here, while the rest of us can know that this is the discussion most likely to devolve into arguments over who has the biggest crystal ball.
SHTF-In-Progress:
Hurricanes, earthquakes, outages. A train hauling toxic chemicals just derailed. A city is on lockdown. The water supply has been declared unsafe. Anything happening in Venezuela or Greece. Live, right-now emergencies. This is when it's too late for the people involved to prep, and the rest of us can only watch and learn and pray.
Postmortems:
Katrina, Fukushima, the USSR. Anything by Selco. Any memories or analysis of past emergencies.
How-To’s and Gadgetry:
A review on generators. “10 Common Solar Mistakes and How to Avoid Them”. Recipes, gardening tips, mechanical advice. That sort of thing. This happens to be my favorite category, because no matter what the original article was, the discussion always has something I want to test out on my next camping trip! I scour the prepper threads for tips and how-to's, which is why it's so disappointing to find a 100-post pissing match.
There's a lot of room for improvement on these, but it's an idea. It would give people a bit of warning over what type of prepper ping it is.
That said, don't stop pinging :)

I going to the store tomorrow so I’ll buy some beans. Then I’ll try my hand at the pressure cooker.
A couple of questions...for later when I’m making big batches...
When you were talking about making a big batch and you’ve put them on a cookie sheet with wax paper...are you leaving them out to cool at that point, or are you putting them in the freezer right then, and stirring as they’re freezing?
Sounds like a great way to cut out a lot of the cooking time for individual meals.
I just let them cool before going in the freezer. Whatever way works at the moment - sometimes I’ll rinse them with cool water in a colander if in a hurry. Just so they don’t go into the freezer piping hot and melt the ice cream!
I forgot to mention that an added benefit of freezing is that it will soften the beans a tad, just like frozen and thawed vegetables end up softer. But with the beans it can be a good thing, if they weren’t perfectly soft. But freezing won’t get them mushy ever, they’ll still hold their shape even if done when they went into the freezer.
As you can tell, I’ve struggled getting beans ‘just right’! Not quite done, and they are hard to eat - and difficult to get softer after adding sauces and seasonings. Too soft - and the cracked and broken beans are edible but not appetizing in the least. I don’t know how the bean canning companies do such a consistent great job! Of course, canned beans are full of salt and are more expensive- so I’m sticking with dried (plus they’ll last longer). Let me know if you have any tips to share as you go through the process.
