Like millions of Canadian mothers, Dawn Trudeaus sleep troubles began when her daughter was born.
Youre getting up at all hours for feedings and whatnot, and I had a hard time getting her to sleep through the night, says the Ottawa-based, 46-year-old social media marketer and blogger at TheModernMomBlog.com. My husband is great, and he would help in a minute but he just did not hear the baby crying, she says.
Even after her daughter started sleeping through the night consistently at age 4, Ms. Trudeau says her sleeping problems persisted to the point of insomnia. I kind of got used to it at that point. And now that her daughter is 7, her sleep disturbances are also business-related.
Things go through your head and you cant shut anything down, she says. You think, tomorrow I have a meeting here, shes starting school tomorrow, did I give her enough lunch? I have a client and they have deadlines. Your mind goes crazy at night.
She continues, Everyone else would go to sleep and Id stay up, Id say, Ive got to do laundry now, Id be so wired, Id drink coffee, too.
Ms. Trudeau says she knows the lack of sleep affects her the day after and beyond. I dont have much mental alertness after a night like that. But you still go on, you have to get your child to school, you have to work and you have to focus. Its very hard, and I tend to overcompensate with coffee.

...my pet peeve.
Is there a 'whatyes'?
I don’t know if you are disgruntled, but you definitely are NOT gruntled.
Um...she’s 46 years old...other issues likely innvolved
Wife feels mildly guilty, stays awake but still can't figure out that if they would just act like horny newlyweds from the beginning, they would both go to sleep sooner. It is just part of the feminine mystique which logic cannot explain.
He's waking her up hoping for a 'What?-Yes??'.
Or worse goes to the PC.....
Yeah. LOL. Turn the bedroom into an icebox so that the man has to use an electric blanket. (Not that I'm speaking from any personal experience . . . . )
There's the trouble.
She can't sleep due to guilt over plagiarism and general lameness.
Any word that dates back to the 16th century is okay by me.
LOL! Not that I'm speaking from personal experience...
"Aren't you hot?"
"No!"
I used to have really bad insomnia before I had children. After I had children, I was hypervigilant, woke at the slightest sound. Sleeping with a baby, woke up before I’d shift a muscle. For about 18 years I almost never slept through the night, but when I did wake up I went back to sleep easily.
Now sometimes I fall asleep with the dog. I kick her without the least concern and she’s the one who wakes up.
You know why women can’t sleep? Besides pregnancy, peeing, children and hormones?
Because men snore.
. . . but only to check out the opening stock markets on the other side of the globe, LOL!
always clear caches before going to bed.
Because men snore.
It's been scientifically proven with tons of anecdotal evidence that men are kept awake by their wives' BRUTAL farts!!!
You left off the guilt over only posting excerpts to FR.
;-)
Another fine piece of sexist, advertising mythology that it’s the men who snore. Yep, men snore AND so do women. I pretty much cured my snoring by being tied to a CPAP machine for 3 years and then I shoved it into the closet and have not had a major problem snoring since. My wife on the other hand still snores loudly many nights but hey, after 43 years I just touch her arm or pat her on the butt and she stops or I nudge her to roll onto her side. Sleeping on your back is a sure way to be snoring as you get older. Women snore, just like men, so you can throw that BS excuse into the trash heap.
Why women sleep worse than men?
Guys are on top of them! : )
