The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

We had a great time in Springfield at the Baker's Creek festival. Lots of great music from several groups. The Finley River Boys and the Baker's Creek kids are the ones I remember.
There was a Don Knotts look-alike and sound-alike, dressed in deputy sheriff outfit, providing humor in between the sessions.
Had a great meal-Vegan-No animal products. First time I ever ate tofu that I liked. Some sort of "beef strips" tasted like jerky, but crisper and easier to chew. Lots of vendors and crafts.
Got to have supper with some relatives, check on our property and relax a bit. Since we got home just before dark on Monday, I've been behind all week. Tuesday felt like Monday etc.

My Gardenia plant is doing so great. I sent for the plant and it came in a very small pot. I just finally moved it over to a larger plant .. and it’s sprouting new leaves every week.
This was my mom’s favorite plant; and I just had to have one. The aroma will remind me of her every day.
Gardenias do smell lovely. Maybe that’s what I’ll plant in my front yard. I have a rectangular bed in front of the front patio, and it has a center of tulips, and hyacinths surrounded by miniature roses.
However, the roses have gone down hill, and hubby wants me to choose something else. While I would like to keep the plants rather short for neatness, I would also like to have a really good smelling plant with pretty flowers.
Tried to plant a second crop of pickling cucumbers and the chickens ran all over them.
I chose this particular Gardenia because it is frost proof. While San Diego doesn’t get a lot of frost, we’re being promised colder/damper weather this winter and I want to be able to have the plant on my back lanai - where the air might be cooler.
There are challenges when raising chickens and gardening too.

Glad you had a great time at Baker’s Creek. It is hotter here this week than last, and supposed to be triple digits next week.
I have new stuff under shadecloth, and my spring garden stuff is about done for...except for the cucuzza. The heat doesn’t phase them.
I think everyone in TX is just hoping August will hurry up and be over. I sure am.
Tail end of the tomaties.. got one red pepper to pick,, dang squirrels hit the fujis and asian pears.. so net time it is ,, they’re hard up, drought and all,, i still see peanuts around so someone is feeding them.. here’s to squirrel stew,,
However, the last two days have been better. He is doing art and still throwing away stuff and getting his house the way he wants it.
We will go there this coming Sunday and take him to Michael's Craft Store for more art supplies.
He is trying to keep living. Yesterday, he weighed 120.8 lbs.. He tries to eat as much as possible, keeping track of all the calories. He is able to cook his meals.
He sent me this email today:
“Some days you just have to stop and thank Jesus for how the day is going. Compared to last Tuesday, today is a wonderful thing. Sure, there is some pain, but nothing like what was going on. I'm not sure how to explain how grateful I am for how well today is going, compared to other days.”
Johnny needs prayers.
It is 107 here today. It is going to stay in that range, 105-107, for the next number of days. I stay in the house. Haven’t had rain in a long time.
There are challenges when raising chickens and gardening too. Garden doing well,, 1st time with chickens.. seems so far that you can have a garden and you can have chickens, but chickens in the garden doesn’t work so well. The little devils now almost 3 months old can wreck havoc in minutes. Looks like the garden will have to be fenced in because we want the chickens to be able to roam the yard
Here, August is our hibernation month. FWIW August 11 is the peak of our heat on average.
Just picked about ten bushels of sweet corn. Anyone want to come over and help put it up? :-)

Boy, I heard that! That’s how most of our August weather is usually. This is about the coolest August I can remember.
LOL...we’ve been eating corn for a month already. Praise the Lord, we have plenty for doing both. :-)

I’ve never grown Carolina Gold tomatoes before. I always had trouble deciding when Sun Golds were ripe and I’m unsure about these. Deep, deep gold or?
I’ve also never grown Black Krim...same issue, when are they ripe. Also I saw a picture of a couple of them and they seem to have a split or line around their shoulder. Is that common?
A couple of years ago, when we had our drought, they were so desperate, they pulled everything they could off the plants green or not just to get the moisture.
Squirrel stew is our prepper plan for meat. LOL
