Windows 10 Starts Charging For Missing Features
Forbes ^ | August 5, 2015 | by Gordon Kelly

Windows 10 splits opinions and it has split mine. I think Microsoft Microsoft nailed the core OS, but the policies around it are controlling and overly invasive. In short: great software, shame about the rules. And here’s another perfect example…

Now Windows 10 has launched, Microsoft is starting to fill in the blanks regarding features removed from Windows 7 and Windows 8 and it doesn’t make for pleasant reading. Why? Because behind this free upgrade are the first signs of where Microsoft will start charging users in future and it begins at the very bottom:

Good, you won't have to subscribe. But do you know how many people use their computers to play Freecell? They are gonna be hurtin' big time. LOL! Maybe Microsoft has done focus groups and knows where the big bucks are?

Microsoft will also “accidentally” turn ON all the Privacy settings you turned OFF (I bet never off) after some Windows update. ALL your private information sucked up to Microsoft and 3rd party companies never to retrieved.

Well, my mom loves solitaire, but she is sticking with Windows 8.1 for now, because she is worried about her scanner and printer not working if upgrades. Especially the scanner, it’s about 10 years old.

But I am sure that there are other solitaire and card game packages out there if she ever needed to get something else.

Windows DVD player? Is that anything like the free and excellent VLC Media Player?

I didn't check but I bet there are a zillion free Solitare games.

Couldn't agree more. Have several computers running Linux, and don't miss a lick. OpenOffice/LibreOffice, PostgreSQL, Thunderbird or Evolution, Opera/Firefox/PaleMoon/etc., Eclipse, and TONS of free games. The newer versions of Linux are fast and easy to install, and you can always find a desktop system (Gnome/KDE/XFCE/etc.) to match your habits.

Gone are the days - for the most part - of difficult kernel tweaking. Install a system like Unbuntu/Kubuntu/Debian/Fedora/Mint/etc. and utilize the package manager for the distro to handle updates and, more recently, upgrades.

Best part? No charge.

My Widows DVD player works fine, and I have found at least 4 free solitaire games in 5 minutes.

For a long time I’ve wondered at how horribly limited a basic windows install is. It is basically th OS, a crappy browser, a really crappy editor, a couple of basic games that look like they were written by anjunior level programmer, and a media player. Some home versions would also have a stripped down version of word. Everything else was a separate thing you had to buy. Want anything beyond a basic word processor? Sorry but you have to buy MS-Office. It didnt even really have anything more than a really primitive batch language. I hesitate to call it that given how primitive the shell is.

Compare it to what you get with a typical Linux system and it’s embarassing.when I install from any major Linux distro, it comes with just about everythimg you could ever want, like web servers, media servers, a full office suite, (or more than one if you prefer). It will have a full featured shell (again, with several options) and also all the tools you could ever want to handle data, like sed/awk/grep. It is such an embarrassment of riches, that the sheer volume of choices available is itself somewhat intimidating to some folks.

Then, there is how routine patches are managed. Every major distro has a modern software management system built in to assist you in installimg software from known repositories. Some are better than others, but they all run rings around anything Microsoft has. I recently installed a fresh copy of MS-Windows 7. After the initial install, that prompted me at several different times to make decisions and enter stuff, it prompted me to install a bunch of “critical” patches. I cant remember the exact number but it was several hundred. Then it rebooted, and propted me to install more critical patches. Then it rebooted, and prompted me to install more critical patches. I thin thwre were 4 separate sets that had to be installed sequentially after rebooting.

Now, compare that to a linux install. I’ve used several different distros, and they all prompt you for all the configuration stuff right up front. You can then walk away from the install until it is done with the installation. Then you reboot, maybe answer ancouple of othernquestions, and you are good to go. When the system tells you you have updates, you say OK, then continue doing stuff until it’s done, or you do what I normally do and go to bed. That way, when you get up, your computer is ready for you. An initial rebootnis normally advised because you will have updated your kernel. Do that and you dont have to worry about it until there are more updates a few weeks, or longer down the line.

Even for distros that update more frequently, reboots are not necessary except for kernel updates. Even for those, there is generally no reason not to wait until you are ready for bed.

Microsoft’s patching is astoundingly primitive in almost every way imaginable. Not only is the process not pleasant, if you have any programs that are not from Microsoft, they arent covered by it. Note thatnall of the headache mentioned above was for nothing more than a base OS install.

I’m really amazed that serious professionals can take microsoft seriously.

Sorry about the rant, but my recent experiences freshly reminded me how bad MS-Windows really is.

Tonight an invitation came up to install Windows 10. As a computer beginner I asked my guy what to do. He said X it, we need to study this more. I look forward to all the useful comments here.

Uh, those are apps, not part of an O/S.

And they are apps that can easily be replaced by freeware that is out there - I eschew much of the built-in Microsoft app-line because I never know/trust if it is sending data I don't want sent - many of their apps "reset" some configurations whenever updated and you have to tell them not to do certain things again...and again.

I agree. Nothing is for free, especially from a liberal company of the likes Microsoft with a leader who favors socialism for personal gain and endorses junk like Common Core. Either there’s a hidden cost later or its riddled with spyware for the feds. Not that we’re doing anything wrong but why the hell should we put up with someone looking through our computer on a witch hunt during a regime like the current one in power?

> as for viruses, worms, adware, malware simple solution: any computer geek caught writing such a program spends the rest of his/her life in the worst prison we can find.

I prefer the drawing and quartering approach to such punishment. . . then dicing and running them through a meat grinder. Then feed what's left to the hogs. Make sure they NEVER come back!

i've literally lost weeks of my life repairing the damage those punks have done because of their pesky viruses. Probably thousands of $$$$$ too. I would gladly show up with a baseball bat but I think Id rather just get their ID and distribute it on the Internet with all their bank account and credit card numbers then tell them, "now you know how I feel, beotch"!

Apple won’t ever charge for there OS

Anybody who believes they aren't paying Apple for the OS development cost with every piece of Apple hardware they buy is an idiot. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Like always, you have no credibility when it comes to any discussion regarding Microsoft and/or Windows. Your world revolves around all things Apple. You’ve proven that in all other discussions regarding Microsoft or Apple. You’re one of the staunchest supporters of Apple on the planet. You say that you’re going with Apple, but, you’re already on that platform, as indicated by your prior posts in other discussions.

So, it’s no surprise that you didn’t like Windows 10; anybody that had read your posts in the past would have guessed your position, even if Microsoft had turned out to be perfect.

Enjoy being part of the 6%, where most of them still have to use Windows to get things done, and no doubt you too.

So, stop with your silly posts, since, you have no credibility and never will. The Apple-cult will never have any credibility when it comes to the opposing platforms. OSX El Capitan if full of problems and iPHones are on a downward slide, and so is Apple stock. It’s going to get worse in the next couple of years. Linux is what you should be using, since, if Windows has its problems, OSX can’t even approach the capabilities of Windows, which is why a huge number of Macs users need to have Windows around. So, stop being such a hypocrite, since, I’m pretty sure that you too WILL BE USING Windows 10.

Liks I asked in an earlier thread: "How is Microsoft going to monetize Windows 10? They have to have a way to do that."

Microsoft had already indicated, years ago, that they would be monetizing their software development via monthly and/or yearly subscriptions for their services and applications. Windows 10 may be 'free'. but, whatever else comes into contact with Windows 10, may have an associated charge. That's what Apple and Google and every other apps or applications development company does, so, why is it a crime when Microsoft does the same exact thing?

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to Swordmaker for the heads up!!

> Uh, those are apps, not part of an O/S.

If you stripped any modern OS of its included apps you'd have nothing left but the the NT/BSD/Linux kernel, and some system utilities.

That's a server OS, not a consumer OS.

Your statement, while true, became obsolete 25 years ago with regard to consumer OSes.

This article is COMPLETE TRASH!

The Microsoft Solitaire suite is 100% free on the Windows Store. It costs NOTHING. Further, this was removed in Windows 8, not 10!

And Windows DVD player? That was a highly used and loved piece of Windows 7 and 8? There are literally dozens of free DVD player suites out there.

This is the most biased piece of shit article I’ve ever read.
