Are you aware of this with Win10?

HAVE YOU UPDATED TO WINDOWS 10 AND HAVE A DATA CAP ON YOU INTERNET PLAN THEN YOU MUST READ THIS Windows 10 is using yourbandwidth to offer updates to others Windows 10 uses an individual’s internet connection to share updates with others across the internet.

Microsoft calls the feature Windows Update Delivery Optimisation and says it is designed to help users get updates faster. It is enabled by default in Windows 10 Home and Pro editions. Windows 10 Enterprise and Education have the feature enabled, but only for the local network.

This is the same way that torrents work: A person’s computer is used as part of a peer-to-peer network to deliver updates faster to others.

Considering that Windows 10 updates are mandatory for most users, the move seems to be aimed at helping ease stress on the for the Redmond giant’s servers. The problem for most users is that these uploads will count against their data caps.

Users can disable the Update Delivery Optimisation but the option is buried in the settings menu for Windows Update. Users have to click on “advanced options” and then “choose how updates are received”. In response to criticism, Microsoft defended the feature by saying it “helps people get updates and apps more quickly if they have a limited or unreliable Internet connection”. It said the move “does not slow down your internet connection” as it uses a “limited portion” of idle upload bandwidth.

Microsoft said that delivery optimisation will not download or send personal content and that it only sends “parts” of the update cache.

For users who have ISPs with data caps, it’s worth checking if this feature is enabled.

Users can stop sharing updates on capped connections by setting their connection to metered or disabling the delivery optimisation feature entirely.

Not disputing your point because it could be entirely valid but if what this guy is claiming is true the scenario could potentially be 3 PC’s downloading the payload and then all three PC’s acting as ad hoc servers (think Bit-torrent) uploading payload.

Without a distribution service such as WSUS (Windows Server Update Service) directing the traffic for patches and updates who knows how they will be delivered?

I’m obviously gonna need to dig into this further.

Wow. That’s pretty sneaky.

I’ve shut it off.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Protip: If you have more than one Windows 10 PC in your home, leaving it enabled and selecting the PCs on my local network option can save you a LOT of bandwidth.

I disliked 8.1 too...so much that I took the download as soon as offered.

10 is easy to understand and a little poking around and I found everything.

My only problem is email is not appearing...I am sure I can get the reason tomorrow when bellsouth is open for business...I get it on the cell phone. Message is: “not synched” and then “working on it”...24 hours now.

New vocabulary is the only problem...I am learning! “tiles”( not icons), dragging items to the opening display, changing size of tiles most important to me, on and on.

My photos were all there and placed in the list by the month they were saved...nice feature!

Games were split into groups by the creator, provider...no problem. Just search for them.

Internet search feature is at the bottom on the left of the bar.

When my mail works...I will give 10 the highest recommendation.

Linux dominates the web hosting side because (1) most hosting pre-linux was unix, from which linux is derived, and (2) Microsoft Internet Information Server is crap.

I am stuck using Windows in my home office, but would never choose that albatross for my personal use. Having said that, it concerns me that if I am forced to upgrade by me employer it would burden me with more Windows BS at personal expense.

I resolved all my email issues nearly a decade ago by installing Thunderbird.

Yep, it could be the most effective malware vector since BitTorrent.

The only question I have regarding Windows 10 is how do I uninstall it?

When I did a search, the only option from Microsoft I found was "how to uninstall IE 10".

I just upgraded from XP to WIN7, and regret it a lot already.

Interesting. I used XP on my two office computers for about eight years before finally switching to 7 some years back. In my experience, 7 is just a cleaner, smoother, smarter version of XP.

One of the first things that impressed me, was that Win 7 automatically found and loaded the drivers for all of my external devices. I didn't even have to install them - 7 did it for me.

Not to mention the fact that I have yet to see a BSOD, or any of the other functionality issues I used to periodically struggle with on my XP computers.

Microsoft has a reputation for getting it right about half the time with their new operating systems. Like a lot of people, I've noticed that it seems to be every other OS that bombs. XP was a hit, while Vista was a miss, then Win 7 was a hit, while 8 / 8.1 was pretty much a miss. If that holds, Win 10 should be another hit.

Windows Update Delivery Optimisation - Watch out for your bandwidth! ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to WVKayaker for the ping!!

Uh, the default turns every Home Windows 10 into a wide area Internet server for Windows updates to unlimited numbers of other PCs NOT on your LAN!
