A Modest Proposal: The Thread Hijack Drinking Game [vanity]
Still me. | Today | Me

Posted on 07/31/2015 11:49:41 AM PDT by Slings and Arrows

The time has come to take action against thread hijackers.

Let me begin with an example of thread hijacking:

Like most Freepers, I am pro-life. Abortion and and euthanasia appall me, and marketing the results even more so. I support candidates who oppose the culture of death, and cheer when it is thwarted.

I also do not find it necessary to mention these facts on EVERY. FREAKING. THREAD.

There is a certain type of Freeper, though, who has no such restraint. For these zealots, any thread that deviates from the pro-life cause, no matter how trivially, is a heresy that must be immediately suppressed.

You are shocked by cruelty to animals? I guess that means you couldn't care less about the cruelty of THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN ABORTED EVERY YEAR!!!!!

You lost a beloved pet? Why can't you mourn THE THOUSANDS OF ABORTED BABIES WHO DIED THE SAME DAY?!!!!

Your car shredded its transmission and you're looking at thousands of dollars in repairs? Why aren't you thinking about THE BABIES WHO WILL NEVER GROW UP TO BE AUTO MECHANICS BECAUSE THEY WERE ABORTED?!!!!

(OK, maybe I made that last one up.)

Arguing with these people is pointless. It's the same principle as wrestling with a pig - you just get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Similarly, trying to convince them that they are being rude is a waste of time - THE CAUSE is far more important little things like courtesy and respect.

So, what can we do about it?

We can get drunk.

I hereby propose The Thread Hijack Drinking Game. The rules are simple: When a poster tries to hijack an unrelated thread to his or her pet cause, you 1) reply to the hijack attempt by quoting the text in question, followed by the word "DRINK!", and 2) Take a drink (or any volume) of your favorite beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Moderation is suggested on animal cruelty threads to avoid alcohol poisoning.

This game will not, I admit, solve the thread hijacking problem. But after a certain number of attempts we will no longer care.

And if anyone is offended by my little proposal, I can only say...

DRINK!

I don’t have the money to get the problem diagnosed, so for now, I’m stuck with the problem, whatever it is.

The EGR Valve was replaced April 29, this year. It just barely passed smog at the time, and knowing that, I have plans to get a “Classic Rod” registration which is $12 a year, and no smog tests.

But again, that doesn’t solve THIS problem. Which is beginning to annoy me, not to mention disturb me at the thought that it can, and probably will, get worse if not fixed soon.

I didn’t think fuel-injected engines did that.

Throttle body FI could and in some models did do that.

Throttle body FI is more or less a glorified carburetor with an electronic dodad that spritzes the fuel into the throat instead of a carb's metering jets.. If the electronic dodad sticks or whatever happens to it, it will allow fuel to drip into the manifold after the car is shut off. On the next starting attempt, it's flooded.. As I said, had a company issued vehicle that did that.

Now - does anyone know if that Geo has throttle body FI or port FI?

Charm, inertia...are we drifting into a discussion of quarks properties in quantum physics now?

Execute code:popcorn

Darks and moose is this sloth creature related to the rabbitoid attack pod from the other thread?

I don’t know, and I don’t know where to look. If I’d had the $50, I would know the problem by now, as I had an appointment at 0900 this morning for the diagnostic. It will just have to wait, and I will try and keep my driving to a minimum. I don’t know what else to do. :o[

Just for the record, I think we knew that something was wrong before we started. :D

But I would agree she should not be smelling gas when trying to start her truck.

Well so far I have found a reference to a ‘91 Tracker throttle body injector. Nothing yet on a ‘92 so far other than people selling one.. Later models are all port type injection (definitely by ‘96 but don’t know when they switched or even if there was a ‘Califoreignia’ version that was different.)

Basic difference that you will see is that a throttle body injector really does look like a carburetor and the fuel line would be connected to it along with an electrical wiring plug/whatever. (Typically need to remove air cleaner or whatever hose stuff goes to the carb-like device to see for sure what it looks like.)

On a port type injection there will be one dodad per cylinder (so 4 on your beast) and those four will have a fuel line that probably runs alongside or on top and branches into each injector. Each injector would have a wiring plugthing connected to it.. On a port type system there will also be a throttle type thing and it could be mounted on top, on the side, where ever they could stick it and it will have a throttle plate so looking into it it will look like a carburetor but there will be no fuel line going to this device. It’s function is to ‘control’ the air inflow and may or may not be included with the MAF (mass airflow sensor) but despite the look, it is not a carburetor or TBI if it has no fuel line going to it.

NnB said you mentioned smelling raw gas. I missed that. Do you smell that when you walk up to the car or only after you have tried to start it and it won’t?

So, I’m no better off than when I started.

I'll say. I can't talk to a mechanic without a credit card.

Nothing on this truck looks like a carburetor.

The raw gas smell is evident only after I have started it and tried to start it a second time. And that raw gas smell disturbs me more than anything else.

It’s almost impossible to diagnose this problem online, and I realize that, but I do appreciate all the help that everyone has given me.

If nothing else, I can tell the mechanic what NOT to look for, if I ever get the money for the check-up for it.

Also just to make sure we’re still talking the same version of English, your problem is only after you have started and driven the car? (Meaning - when it’s warmed up..)

Or does it also not start after it sat over night also?

And - you mentioned parking on a hill so you could start it via the ol’ pop the clutch trick. Was that in conjunction with this issue or only when the starter was acting up? And if with the present issue, does it start when you do that? (’Cause that would really wander into a strange and mysterious land..)

If I could get in touch with some people from the church, I might have a chance at having it looked at for free, but I need “permission” to even call anyone, just to make sure I don’t have to pay for the advice.

Makes me want to go soak my head.

The first time I start it, it starts like it always had in the past. The second and/or third or more times, it is a real problem child.

I’ve always used the clutch-start method when I haven’t been able to get the engine to turn over, either before the starter was replaced or with battery problems (my old Toyota truck) and though I park on a slight incline, I prefer to start it with the key.

And so far, with this issue, I’ve only had to do it once, but it was like my third or fourth stop during errand-running.

OK, I don’t know who names things in quarkville, but charm has no inertia.

I’ve been married over 30 years and I know it takes series energy to remain charming.

I have tried that. It doesn't help solve vehicular issues.

Here’s a thought. Is it insured?

Put a sign in the window that says, “Antique truck, $5,000.”

Then, when it’s stolen, collect the insurance and buy a truck that doesn’t have starter issues.
